The rough and ready test for the right temperature is to smear the part with soap and when it turns dark brown/black you can start to bend, at least that is what an old timer told me years ago.
Probably right, I am aware, I just did not want caked-on soap crap. It bends when it is warm enough, I just wanted a temperature reading while we were at it. (over 280C or 535F)
@@theoverengineer Thanks heaps. I had to bend a fish rod holder made out of cast aluminium and I needed to know what temp to get the holder to to bend it. Your video helped me heaps. Thanks. AU
A little higher than 220 C (430 F), maybe 250 C (480 F). Make sure it bends with little effort, but neither melting/dripping/collapsing soft, nor so stiff microscopic tears in the metal are caused.
I did this on my kitchen range with some vice grips. Does not look nearly as good as your work, but it will get me to the shop. Thanks guys!

I had to laugh at the shifting sounds you made. 3:02.
Sorry to ask but what type of gas for the torch?
So Approximately what temperature did you manage to start bending ?

Thank you, by the way great videos 👍🏻they are very helpful
How high was the top temperature..400-450 Celsius?
Something like that, yes. Way below 660C melting point.
My gear shifter bent inwards
