Driving on ice may seem exotic and perhaps a little scary, but it is harmless and a great way to get around and cut down on travel time.
In winter, when the temperature is stable and the ice thickness is about 25 cm, ice roads are opened on the large lake, maintained by the Swedish Transport Administration. They are thrown wide open so that they can be kept open even if it snows and the wind blows; they are checked morning and evening and closed immediately if staff discover anything that could become dangerous.
