    Steve does it like no one else, he points out all the important stuff and unlike some others, he does not sugar coat mistakes and issues when a car has faults.

    I'm currently working at a VW dealer for an internship in Germany. Just yesterday I delivered a Golf R Manual to a customer. It was only a half an hour drive, but it was over back country roads, and easily the most fun I've had in a car for a while. The thing was amazing!

    Steve..in a Zed4Me you tube video, he describes how to make the center console usable. It turns out that VW was forced to lock it as part of a U.S. Customs regulation. Go figure. Similarly, the rear taillight design differs from the Euro-spec version. Again, U.S. Customs regulation requirements for the dimension of the indicator - less than one inch is a no no. As you can tell, I've been tracking this car for some time. Holding tight waiting for the manual! Thanks for the comprehensive video.

    I just bought one a few weeks ago and love it. I did the fix for the center console so I can open it up and disconnected the soundaktor which is speaker where it makes the louder engine sound. I just turned 1000 miles so it's time to mess with launch control

      +idiotgear Why did they make the center console unable to open?? That seems backwards!

    • @RobDaman

      +buildmorefarms100 some sort of government safety regulation because the parking brake doesn't have a handle or what not.

    Steve, the center console does open, I believe. there is a latch underneath the front lip. unless they've changed it for some reason from my GTI.

    Some additional info. It’s an excellent practical car that is rather quick. Some of the sound is amplified into the cabin via the Soundaktor located under the hood that can be disconnected. The tone is very similar without it but just not as loud. Think it’s stupid that they do this? Check with Porsche, Jaguar and several other MFG’s they install the same thing. The center console is bolted shut for the US market because DOT requires a latch to keep it from opening in-case of a rollover which it does not have (ha ha). Guess what when you remove the bolts it is fully finished inside just like in Europe. The DSG shifts faster than Jackie Stuart with a manual. It preloads the gears and is not an automatic in the conventional sense. It has duel clutches. I prefer it over the six speed I had in my Gti. It would appear that Ferrari concurs with me because I don’t believe they offer manuals any longer. The interior is well made almost Audi like. I would be interested to see if they release the R400 or 420. I think VW might have learned a little bit about making cars since they own. Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche, Audi, Ducati, and a few others. Give one a test drive you might be surprised, I was.

    Howdy Steve,
    I'm trying to decide between the Golf R and a WRX CVT. The WRX drives much better, cost less, but feels like a kid's car and I found the seat uncomfy and somehow it felt underpowered.. The CVT works better than you'd imagine. The Golf R can be fun, but it feels dull when not mashing the gas.Also the AWD feels somehow better in the subie. Which would you get and why. Thanks in advance for any help you cab offer.
    Peace~

      @stevehammes  8 лет назад +2

      +commercialking I'm not a WRX guy so for me, this is easy: I love the Golf R. Though the WRX I drove had the stick and not the CVT. I feel the Golf R is immeasurably more refined while still delivering on the fun. It's pricey, though. Subaru's AWD systems really do seem to outperform the competition but if money isn't a big factor I'm buying the VW.

      if you have the money, i think the s3 is worth it. more tech and of course its luxury badge. but the R is a good buy too

    No storage in the centre console?! How is that possible? What's keeping them from putting a storage compartment there? This could be a deal breaker for many people.

      It looks like he has a pre-production model. That might be a factor as to why it doesn't open.

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  9 лет назад

      I assumed it was because of the all-wheel drive setup but it was a pre-production model. VW didn't tell me any different.

      chicobear I had a base model 2010 Golf. It didn't even have an armrest, let alone a storage console. The car was so much fun to drive I didn't care!

    • @SavageP
      @SavageP 9 лет назад

      ***** I believe it is sealed due to it not being crash tested, something like that. Some dumb export law since it's imported from Germany. Hopefully a proper fix is on the 2016 model. You can fix it but it won't be adjustable like the GTI.

  • @vladsaghin7644

    Well, every quality product is expensive and the Subaru is very close in price.. Load up the GTI and the price gap with the already (almost) fully loaded R isn't that big

    There is storage in the center console, i had to unlock mine when i bought it i know its lame, and i agree the stereo is totally lame, the fender speakers rock! but the headunit is so bland, Unfortunatley i broke a rim in half hitting a pothole on the freeway last week, darn Wisconsin roads😓 just about cried because a new wheel is $800 from VW and a tire is $275, so i ended up ordering a set of Konig rims for $700 😉 id rather have 4 new wheels than one.

      No reason for it to make you cringe. I come from the land of S2000s and FD3S and I love this thing. The DSG is slick and part of what helps it generate these numbers.

      Mike Cruz I went with WRX and now just waiting for my order to arrive at the dealership. Plus, manuals last longer than automatics. Especially since its a DSG transmission it will be costly to repair if it were break down.

    Still no Euro LED tail lights on our North American versions... sigh
    maybe one day we won't get dumbed down cars over here.

    • @rahmatiTV
      @rahmatiTV 9 лет назад

      +dustywm It's actually because Namerican laws call for a full inch height for signals and the euro l.e.ds are 0.7 inches... so they subbed it but agree they should make one any who

    • @dustinmorris13
      @dustinmorris13 9 лет назад

      +Vicariously Thru-Kay well thanks for letting me know. I had no idea! that's an odd law seeing as lots of vehicles have such tiny signals that you can't tell when they're on. with the full LED strip on the Euro version it's impossible to miss it. They should have fixed this issue for sure instead of dumbing it down for us.

      I have a 2009 JETTA TDI with a DSG and it had to be replaced at 172000kms and cost over $5000. That's why I would never want another DSG!
