Jimmy, you and your son are so much alike and so glad you take him with you as much as you do. You are making memories with that young man that he will talk about with his kids and so on. God Bless you brother, love your video's and can not wait for the next one. HOOAH!!!
Jimmy, regarding your Bonanza cylinder walls, they are channel chromed and look good from what I saw. What you saw as "crazing" is the normal, intended, chrome channeling, necessarily done for proper lubrication. Chromed cylinders are indicated by orange paint on the cylinder base or somewhere on the cylinder fins. The red paint was probably considered close enough to orange. Also, the fact that they are chromed, explains the absence of rust you mentioned at 22:49.
Yep.. cylinders are chromed...provides better oiling of the cylinder walls. Chrome cyls are indicated by orange or red paint on the base of the cylinders.
The AD on Bonanza wing spar carry-through structures applies only to 1957 H models and later, not to the C35 in question, so you should be good to go in that regard, barring unseen corrosion. Also, the E185 engine in C35s is rated at 205 HP. The electric prop is not subject to an AD, but removal and bearing lubrication is required at 200 hours IIRCC. That one has been upgraded with a solid state constant speed controller, an aftermarket modification available in the 1960s, as indicated by the dial for low-high rpm in addition to the toggle switch for prop pitch control. The aux tank behind the back seat could be either 10 or 20 gallons. The bladders Gor the main tanks might be OK, but will probably need replacement after sitting so long without fuel. Their longevity varies with the manufacturer, sometimes Uniroyal, Goodyear or a few others. BTW, on the later Bonanzas, the spar AD requires a visual inspection inside the cabin, sometimes a dye-penetrant or eddy current inspection, and allows cracks up to a certain length to be stop-drilled. Beech also offers a beef-up kit for the spar center section that can be installed if one fails the inspection. That AD is repetitive, requiring inspection every 500 hours (I think, may be 300 hours, don't recall offhand), but it doesn't apply to the C35. Good luck!
, yah, it's 500. I believe it was a spar web, not the spar itself. As you said, a pretty easy fix. I was looking at a "straight 36" and that inspection scared me and I lost a sweet deal.

My Great Grandfather, Walter Friedlander, set my Friedlander Great Uncles up run Aeronca. I have a roll of fabric we got from my grandparents house after they passed.
Bananas are fun, and fast. If you are sitting in the back they wag you to sleep. Just have to always make sure the ruddervators are properly balanced. Even mud daubers can put them out of balance if they make enough nests inside. You can close most of the openings with speed tape. The Champ looks awesome. I would say that if you could get the Champ for 10k to 15k and the Bonanza for 20k to 30k would be a good deal. Okay so before everyone jumps on me I do NOT have a Pilots license nor am I a A&p. I just love aircraft and I read and watch anything and everything that I can find about them. So if I am way off go easy on me please and don't just say that I am stupid and don't know crap because that's not going to help me learn anything. I have no problem with constructive criticism and enjoy learning new things. Keep up the great work Jimmy
Ah, the '152 C model Bonanza - my brother's 1st Bo, his had an E-225 engine (basically the same, just rated at higher HP). Our mechanic also has a C model, with the E-185 (currently apart/storage). Yeah, the electric prop gov was unusual. he had that thing for about 7 yrs, got it all dialed up, had the engine OH, brand-new STEC-30 A/P and Aspen panel installed, then sold it, got his '65 Debonair with the IO-520, just added tip tanks last year. I love the Citabria's! Although, the models I like have an electrical system and metal-spar/wings. I almost bought a restored 7-ECA (with factory metal replacement wings) a few years ago, but it was in VT at the time, in Jan, and every time I could get there to check it out it was like -20 degrees and 30 kt winds...So I missed it...LOL, great video!
Yeah that Bonanza is scary because it seems to be saddled with a few more unknowns....but man that airplane just spoke to me. It's just a very sweet looking retro-futuristic airplane. Even if I didn't want the Champ (which I also like, just not as profoundly as the Bonanza), if I had the money I'd buy both of em just to get that Bonanza.
JImmy, your channel has fast become one of my favorites. I wish I lived closer - I'd volunteer to help you bring some of these great finds back to life.
My first ride in an airplane was in a Bonanza V-35, my best friend's dad owned one... that's something I'll never forget, it made my entire years...lol
When I decided to take Flying Lessons early 1990's The instructor had use of a '46 Champ. Told me If I could learn to fly it I could fly anything! Loved that plane.
When I was a young child I had a plastic toy beech bonanza, v-tail! It was red on top and white on the bottom! One of my favorite toys! And when I was about 13 we were out at the airport and there was an aeronca champ setting on tarmac, in like New condition for $595 ! Dark green as I remember!
If the engine runs on the champ and compression is good on it, and the fabric is good. 15-20k. On the C-35 Bonanza, it has No ADSB. Might need new bladders. The prop bearings need checked. 24-27k with a good gear swing and good compression.. the big if is the powder you found on the ruddervadors . That corrosion is what killed my C-35. I loved my light C-35.
These numbers seem more realistic than all the other posted. With all the tube and fabric tail draggers you need to check the bottom tubes at the tail they rust out and fail. Had to do a repair to my 39 J4A.
The `first powered aircraft I flew was a 100hp Champion Citabria and went solo after just over 5 hours, then went on to do some aerobatics with my instructor not long after I went solo. The next tail dragger I flew was a North American T6 Harvard (Texan) with the New Zealand Airforce and did 146 hours in a combination of all of 18 we had on the line, most of which are still flying somewhere in New Zealand or Australia.
I'd pass on the "Doctor Killer", too much of a risk with the engine and the main spar not to mention the magnesium - IMO. I love the Champ, she's a sweet, low and slow, ride on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
@@Roadglide911 did you actually watch the video? Thats the 2nd comment ive seen from you that the answer was actually explained in the video. A lot of the control surfaces, the structural parts are made of magnesium, which is prone to corrosion, and hard and expensive to repair.
I really enjoy your videos Jimmy. Please make more of them. Thank you for this one. My grandfather was a private pilot and I flew with him till he quit flying. Good memories. 15k for the big plane and 7k for the little yellow one.
Marvel Mystery Oil is awesome stuff, learned about it from my Dad. I worked from an E-350 Econoline with a bucket attachment that was on its last legs after being resurrected. When I warned my supervisor that the water pump was chattering he just kinda stared blankly, he was NOT mechanically inclined at all, until I told him it means it was going out. After he told me I might have to go back to a regular van untold him I'd take of the problem. A few drops of Marvel in the radiator and it quieted right down and kept going another year or so until I got a new truck.
IIRC, from my days of working on Barons and Bonanzas, that spar inspection is done after taking out the seats. Spar is directly under the seats. Either way, those airplanes look really nice at first glance.

Jimmy,....love your channel! Good news.....there are zero AD's on the Beech electric prop. There are inspections and 250hr. lubes. Buy both planes!!!!!
That Champ is awesome. For Saturday afternoon fun flying there is nothing better and never will be. Take the doors off and go spy on your neighbors. Great 👍
"It is good that you act as yourself Jimmy. That's cool. Being yourself is the best actor. It shows you truly, and? I'm glad you love and appreciate your work. Just how you and your Son is now, that is just how I use to be( Flying around with my friend everyday). I know your his best friend Jimmy, and? I know you would train him well."
Dad owned the Lake City, Iowa FBO prior to WW II. The Champ was one of the airplanes he owned. Mom would fly it out to her Dad's farm, land on the Farm to Market road in front of the house go have tea and spend the afternoon with her Mom. No electric so she would hand prop it to start it. If she could do it, I suppose you could do it!
7k for the Champ with it being 11 years out of annual and the issues you mentioned. The Bonanza is a run as fast as you can away. Way to many unknowns without a through inspection by an A&P with I.
Thanks for a new upload Jimmy! Anyone have any abandoned equipment in Va let me know. Your wife has got to be the best . I like how the expense is the first sum of the equation and the whole life thingy secondary...
Certain aircraft have timeless lines, that beech is one, P-51 and F-4 are a couple of others. Start a go fund me, you would be surprised at what we are willing to watch you repair. As a mechanic, I love this channel.
The AD your talking about I think is the inspection under pilot/co pilot seat. Cracks in the web of the spar and around area in radius of Carry thru. If that is the one and has cracks it’s expensive. Been modification of the AD I am speaking of.
To buy to sell? I think the Aeronca has the best chance.. The DrKiller...Might be worth $50G? (in annual) BUT A huge gamble. So, $20G for the pair.. I think they are of equal value at this point .. The Beech has more total value ready to fly, but you gotta get it there... total value of both in annual? $70-80G? (right buyer, right time)
Great Video Jimmy! Can't go wrong with a Champ, first airplane I flew in as a youngster. My father owned two of them at different times through out my child hood. As I have said before you let me know when your ready for the turbine world and I will help you stay away from the "it such a good deal" deals.
Couldn't agree more! I've owned a Champ for the past 11 years and can't imagine a better, more economical airplane for those late summer evening flights and the morning breakfast runs...not fast fast or loaded with avionics but an absolute joy to fly!
Not a thing wrong with an electric prop. My '48 Bonanza had it and I had zero problems with it. The "V"block also has an AD note for replacement. I paid about $75 dollars for mine. I had the tubular spar in mine, and installed a spar kit. Yours is a built up aluminum., which is very strong! If the price is right, I'd get them both! I just loved my Bonanza, even though my E-185, was just the takeoff power, and 165 hp was the real hp. Wish I still had mine, had to sell it for a down payment for a house (after I got married). Should have kept the Bonanza! Bob
A champ would be such a cool old plane to own. I have a radio Control model champ and would like to have the full size version!! I can't wait to see it running!
The white powder on the negative terminal of the battery is most likely corrosion due to an electrolytic process? Apparently on the negative terminal “white powdery corrosion” is due to sulfation, which is indicative of a battery left unused and under charged for too long!
Liked the return flight tune and speed up. Silas is a star in his own right and you are a great dad. Maybe $20K tops for both airplanes? Fixed up Champ can sell for $25K easy and Bo parted out can get $5K for engine core and $$$10K for the control surfaces, maybe?.
It would take a good annual inspection to determine what those two planes are worth. (At least they aren't covered in poop.) I would consider if the owner has to pay hangar rent or are the planes not costing him anything to sit there. Does he still have a pilot's license or are the planes useless to him, which would explain why they have been sitting. On the Champion, I want you to take the wing inspection covers down and look at the condition of the spars. Pay particular attention to the rear spar. The ribs are attached with tabs. I found a Citabria with broken tabs (from doing aerobatics) and the rib was sawing into the spar since there was movement when I lifted up and pushed down on the inboard end of the aileron. We opted for new wings with metal spars. Check today's pricing on that. You buy them all covered and ready to install from the factory. They will want a piece of the inboard spars sent back to them for proof they would not be reused. Old fuel bladders sometimes crack on the top surface first. If they are let sit less than full for a long time they dry out there. You will be the first to know if you top off the tanks with fuel.
Love your channel it’s my top aviation channel. That being said without a spar inspection I’d make a strong offer on the Champ and get the Bonanza as a bonus. $15k. Good luck.

The Champ is worth maybe $30K on a good day, the C35 is worth about $50K. $80K - repairs, clean up and annual, a fair offer would be in the $50K range. Who knows, airplanes are selling for super crazy money now.
Jeez, what a memory that brought back; my 5th grade teacher (Mrs. Duffy) back in the 70s owned and flew an Aeronca Champ. I remember because she bragged about that plane all the time! I don't know why I remember this factoid, but she said hers had a 90-hp Continental. I wonder if that's what this one has? Small world, aviation...

Look like someone really loved and cared for these planes!
The Champ is a go and the Bonanza scares the snot out of me, like an old Vincent Price movie, 😝 !
Like a Steven King movie. "I fixed you an airplane....go ahead.....fly it."
Your son’s expression of your landing was awesome!!
LOL! 'Moon River'... that's such an old and appropriate joke.
Hey jimmy , you always cheer me up ...with the way you are . Thank you .......
have owned 2 each of both ,7eca,7gcbc,f35.m35 still have the 1960 M35,, two of the best planes ever made
I'd pass on the "Doctor Killer", too much of a risk with the engine and the main spar not to mention the magnesium - IMO. I love the Champ, she's a sweet, low and slow, ride on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
What's the main spar?
The magnesium? 🤭🤔
@@Roadglide911 did you actually watch the video? Thats the 2nd comment ive seen from you that the answer was actually explained in the video. A lot of the control surfaces, the structural parts are made of magnesium, which is prone to corrosion, and hard and expensive to repair.
I think the spar is an issue on the straight 47 35s
I also like the way the Stratux is mounted in your Lancair. I am going to duplicate that on my Ercoupe!
IIRC, from my days of working on Barons and Bonanzas, that spar inspection is done after taking out the seats. Spar is directly under the seats. Either way, those airplanes look really nice at first glance.

They are one of the best concerts, you can not go but just seeing them from the screen, I know it was surprising
💗❤️💌💘
Jimmy,....love your channel! Good news.....there are zero AD's on the Beech electric prop. There are inspections and 250hr. lubes. Buy both planes!!!!!
Careful !! You might have to bail out over a mountain range, make sure you always wear a parachute and tape a fire extinguisher on your leg.
I’m sure Jimmy needs your advice. 😂😂
@@Roadglide911 Don’t be a 🍆 , if you watched the video Jimmy asked what we would pay for the planes.
You must be new here
@@Roadglide911, I’d expect that remark from someone who has a Road Glide. 🤣
Thanks for a new upload Jimmy! Anyone have any abandoned equipment in Va let me know. Your wife has got to be the best . I like how the expense is the first sum of the equation and the whole life thingy secondary...
We owned a K35 for a few years. 150knots on 12gph. Oh and it had tip tanks for 8 hour endurance with a gross weight increase! I miss that bird!
I like the champ!!!!! Jimmy and Mini Me, y'all ROCK!! GOOD LUCK on the planes!!!🤞🤞
Get the Champ!!!! Love it, looks nice paint, engine part are "reasonable". Wing spars will need inspected and possible deal breaker.
Jimmy is a great guy all round. The son must be so proud of his Dad! Memories are made of these!
I miss working with my dad. Mini me, try to enjoy all the time with your dad.
Cool to see the old Champ. My Dad learned to fly in one.
Lotta work to fix the fabric over the fuel tank .. plus repaint. and that aside from the possible corrosion underneath.
Certain aircraft have timeless lines, that beech is one, P-51 and F-4 are a couple of others. Start a go fund me, you would be surprised at what we are willing to watch you repair. As a mechanic, I love this channel.
Jimmy, you said j3 and showed an l4 grasshopper (more windows scout plane army plane) ....that said ....that champ is a beauty and wow
The AD your talking about I think is the inspection under pilot/co pilot seat. Cracks in the web of the spar and around area in radius of Carry thru.
If that is the one and has cracks it’s expensive. Been modification of the AD I am speaking of.
What a great young man you have there to help you out. Excellent experience for him, way to go dad.
Jimmy, I think you can flip two to planes very easy. They look solid, with little things to do. Hope you can buy it.
Your subscriber count has jumped a few thousand in a couple of days, great to see it climbing so quickly. Love your work. 👍👍
Love this channel. Always look forward to new videos. Thanks Jimmy !
Bob
My Granddad and his brother built a 1937 champ back in the 70s.
Kool old planes
hello Jimy, I'm happy to watch your videos, you're a good and simple master,
I want the Champ, and the 1974 Monte Carlo! Good luck.
I`ve gotten to where I cannot wait for another installment. My favorite. Keep up the great content buddy...Cheers from chilly Wyoming
I’m also glad I’m not the only one who wears his sunglasses about he ear muffs to help with noise canceling.
This brings back memories of flying with my father. Great content.
Same here, my father had a Bonanza, then had a Cessna Bird Dog, like a big brother to the Champ.
Buy the old Monte Carlo too.
Just shows what a difference well ventilated storage makes. Good roof.
Was trying to remember the Aeronca champ today. I know someone who owns and flys one. I have flown it too. It was a great trainer.
Love your channel it’s my top aviation channel. That being said without a spar inspection I’d make a strong offer on the Champ and get the Bonanza as a bonus.
$15k. Good luck.
"PASTOR JIM! - We need a little help over here!! " 😁😁😂😂🤣🤣👍👍👍
With a V-tail Bonanza, it's now more like, "You buy a set of magnesium control surfaces, and you get an airplane included for free."

All I can say is your kid is one lucky kid. I would have loved to been able to go flying like he has pretty much when he want to
yup chrome bores are crazed for lubrication
Yes buy them I would love to too see that Bonanza fly again!!
The Champ is worth maybe $30K on a good day, the C35 is worth about $50K. $80K - repairs, clean up and annual, a fair offer would be in the $50K range. Who knows, airplanes are selling for super crazy money now.
My first airplane was a Champ, tons of fun. Wish I still had one.
" Make the world more beautiful, save a Airplane"!.
Heck with the planes, look at that Monte Carlo!
