Delivering a Bionic Hand in Ecuador 2023

In the summer of 2014 I met Juan Suquillo in Ecuador, who lost his hand 35 years prior from an explosion in a war. I was a graduate student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and we had just built Mk 2 of the Ability Hand, which was 3 times the size of an average human hand, with wires going everywhere plugged into breadboards, power supplies, computers, and the wall. Despite that, Juan made a pinch with his hand for the first time in 35 years. In front of international news stations, he said a part of him had come back. If we wanted everyone to feel the same we he did, we had to commercialize our technology. That's when PSYONIC was born.
Finally, nine years later, we've brought a part of him back. After many iterations and many failures we are now at Mk 9 of the Ability Hand, being used by patients and researchers around the world. And with a generous sponsorship from Henson Shaving and Hacksmith Entertainment Ltd. , together with the Range of Motion Project and David Krupa, Juan finally has the bionic prosthetic hand we have wanted to make for him all these years. To say it was an emotional experience for all of us is an understatement. The effect that Juan has had on us and PSYONIC will hopefully bring inspiration and hope to many patients, scientists, and engineers all over the world.
This is why we do what we do. And even after nine years, this is just the start.
