Given the driver and thermal issues with the 7900xtx, I'd rather go for the 4080. But at this point in time, neither is worth the purchase as prices will come down later.
I'd give the 4080 a try if the price wasn't ridiculous. Though overall neither card seems really appealing for the money as it stands with the 7900 XTX's early issues.
2 years ago, I wanted to buy a 3090ti... I could get one for 2000€. Now I got a 4080 for 1300€ and it's faster then a 3090ti. So, yes it's still a lot of money.. but what a bargain if you compare it like this ;-)
Taking the time to explain how charts can be used to skew perception was great work. There was a kids show in Canada years ago called Street Cents that taught kids how to be savvy consumers, and I see you doing that here. Keep growing this channel!
The most recent AMD driver did have some tweaks for Halo Infinite. I feel like it may be worth re-benching that one for both cards with the optimizations the S3 update provides. Also, since end of January, batches have had no vapor chamber filling issues with the 7900XTX reference model. They took two weeks off from selling to review stock. No longer a problem. Their supplier has addressed the issue. Not a big deal breaker, but still absolutely bizarre that Nvidia skipped putting DisplayPort 2.0 ports on their Ada Lovelace cards.
Yeah that is surprising about the Display Port for sure. Good idea about Halo Infinite. I’m happy the vapor chamber issue has been resolved. It seems the 12V adapter catching fire on the 4090 is also resolved.
Today (March 6th) I looked on NewEgg and saw a 7900 XTX from ASRock that was after-market (Their OC Phantom card) available for $999 (MSRP for reference) while the RTX 4080 was still over $1300. I decided to pull the trigger to go ahead and get the ASRock card, upgrading from a 3070 Ti and I am 99% sure it will double my performance.
I'm in a similar situation. I have 3070, and none of 4080 cards fit in my nzxt h1. Yesterday, I saw sapphire pulse 7900 xtx for $999 on newegg and decided to buy it. I'm fine with compromising RT performance. Most new UE4 UE5 games look great w/o RT anyway.
@@kurtpope1463 Been almost 3 weeks now and it's been pretty awesome! The only problems so far was the game "The last of us" was crashing but they released an update and all was well. Games are good. Video editing great. Haven't done too much 3d yet but I dabbled and that's been dope as well. It obviously not a RTX 4090 but Its def dope for the price. Got mine for $999. its been solid for that price.
I ended up getting a Gigabyte RTX4080 OC 16GB as I couldn't get a RX7900XTX around my area. As it turns out, I'm glad I ended up with the 4080. It performs great with my 13600k CPU, and the games look and play amazing. I have no regrets at all buying the 4080, it's a huge step up from my old RX6600. Cheers
I went with the 7900XTX, even though I think the 4080 is the better choice for the money. For the simple reason that there is a GPU price cap in my head that I refuse to exceed. This is my first AMD card since the venerable 290X and I can confirm that overall smoothness of ownership isn't equal to my Nvidia cards and that certain titles just don't seem to like AMD (especially with RT on), but the titles I've been focusing on have stabilized with GPU drivers and game patches. Overall pretty good.
I would love the 4080. I think it would be a card I would use for at least the next 2 generations. But man that price tag stings. Its giving me the same vibe of ppl who bought the 3090ti for $2000+ dollars just for it to drop to $1000 bucks a couple of months later. I see the exact same thing happening with this card. It might not hit $800 but, I can see it hitting anywhere from $850 to $900. And at that time I think it would be a good card to upgrade to.
@@danielalbright8398 I'll take the L on this. Its not Dropping. More than likely Nvidia will drop a 4080ti in its place and drop it maybe $1000 tops. Thanks AMD. For being good enough or Cheap enough to get Nvidia to move prices.
Came from 7900xtx and switch to 4090, even with rt off nvidia still has better image quality. But if dont care much of image quality and you like raw performance then you cant go wrong with the xtx
@@raynathanielcaparas8064 given the same setting, they all produce the exact same image, not sure how image quality factors in here other than higher frames with raytracing
I think the real winner cards were the 3080 and the 6800xt. A current 3080 can get picked up for about $600 now and a 6800 xt for about $500. Price per performance on both cards are pretty good compared to their newer counterparts which are double the price
I purchased an Asus RTX 4080 Tuf gaming for $1,199... I actually don't think that's bad for a non-reference card. I remember when the RX 6900 XT came out, I paid more for that card at Best buy. Another thing no one talks about is if you run a custom loop and your graphics card is included in that loop good luck. It's hard to find a water block for the XTX's. There are only a few model cards you have to choose from, and thats if you can find them. The ones I did find puts the price the same or more than the 4080. I can pick any manufacturer with the 4080, and EK makes a water block for it. Much more options! So yes I agree the 4080 is a better all around package.
Bro, you win the whole fucking RUclips for this video. The best verdict hands down. Straight to the point. No drama. You literally cannot argue against a single point you made in the entire video, tho I know some will try. Spot on. Great video. I will definitely be sharing it.
@@ErockOnTech No doubt. I meant it! Between you and Techtesters, you're like the only two that aren't just parroting everything being said by every other channel.
This was a really tough call for me. Although I'm not going to purchase either, I do make purchase recommendations to people and I want to make sure I am well informed. This video was really great to watch and I even used it in a professional context! 👍 Overall though, if I was in a position to get either, I don't believe I could really bring myself to get the 7900 XTX because it would have to be either a PowerColor Red Devil or XFX Merc 310 for me, personally. At that point, I would only be $100 away from a MSRP(ish) 4080 and honestly I just woudn't bring myself to take a 3-4 year investment risk on a first generation GPU that AMD had goals for and clearly didn't meet vs. NVIDIA's card just has less risk as it's on an old style monolithic design. Even if DLSS Frame Gen doesn't end up working well this gen, I'd still get the 4080 for raster. I've got an AMD 6900 XTXH card right now and I love it. But, I have no brand loyality and at an over-1000 USD cost, risk assessment far outweighs anything else. If AMD dropped the cost of the 7900 XTX to an AIB cost of 900, then maybe I would consider the risk over a 1200 USD 4080. NGL I'm really glad I got the card I have now for 660 USD for 1440p. 4K GPUs, 4K monitors... way too pricey for my tastes.
Awesome video! I'm real happy with my 4080 purchase, here in australia the 7900 XTX and the 4080 vary from being the exact same price to the xtx only being 50-100 usd cheaper, so 4080 was a no brainer especially with the productivity benefits. plus i got mine on sale for close enough to the msrp and its pretty rare for any relatively new card to go for the msrp here
Thanks for the video! If they were at MSRP and for some reason I felt like spending 4 figures? It would be a coin toss. On average, where I live, the 4080 is $300 more than 7900XTX so I would go 7900XTX AIB model here. FSR 2.x is competative now, AMD H.264 is now really good for capture and stream tasks (check my last 6 videos). I have been happy with game capture now. Only thing I see giving up is about 20% Raytracing performance over all give or take. I hate the power connector adaptor crap on the 4000 series. If you need CUDA for your job? you have little choice other than to go nVidia. Frame Generation is not extra performance IMO. I want raw rendered frames. BTW ... FG added to charts to make bars look long compared to AMD is exactly what Jensen wants. Somehow convince people that nVidia is faster in benchmarks. If people actually took FG as performance (sad some will), they would get a 4070ti over the 7900XTX. Hmmm....
The 4080 can be purchased for $1200 right now.(US) The 7900xtx is not in stock anywhere and when it comes back partner cards will cost $1150-1200 good luck getting a reference card. Prices between the two are too close in the US so 4080 is a no brained as it has better support and a better cooling solution. If you have a small case the 7900 is better obviously. I initially wanted a 7900xtx but grabbed a 4080
Y wud u even buy a ref card when it’s already proven to be defective. Fg is there to make bars look long? Bro everyone is praising fg. Its free performance . With fg u get double the fps of 7900xtx. Why wud i not use it if it looks the same? Why do i need get hung up on fake frame theory when it’s doing the job for me.
N it’s not 20% difference in rt. In a heavy rt game, 7900xtx gets smashed to pieces. Dont bring in rt shadow benchmarks. No one cares about that or far cry rt performance. Thats a joke
@@anuzahyder7185 I understand what you are saying but outside of Control and Cyberpunk it fairs much better. Keep in mind, nVidia was in house developing the RT in those titles with the dev's. Stands to reason as they were pioneering it at the time. Watch Hardware Unboxed review of the 4070ti and they kind of explain that newer RT titles close the gap (less so vs 4080 sure) but nVidia is still faster with Ultra RT settings for sure. Example... 7900XT vs 4070ti: F122 7.5% slower, Watch Dogs Legion 10% slower, Gaurdians 25%, Fortnight URE5 tied, Unreal Tied, Resident Evil 10% faster in favor of the 7900XT, Spider man Tied and Forza 5 with RT 14% slower. On average 4070ti only 7% faster across all but Cyberpunk. I know it's wider between 7900xTX and 4080 though but not by as much as you would think. Maybe 30% on average. But it's cheaper by $300 where I live. If they were the same price you bet I would get the 4080 but they would need to drop below $1000 and won't so I won't bother.
One point that I definitely considered carefully as someone who doesn't buy a new system very often (I'm upgrading to a Gigabyte 4080 Gaming OC w/ 13700k from a 980 w/ 6700k), is the extra VRAM with the XTX. While not useful now, it may very well positively impact performance quite a bit in a few years compared to the 4080. At the end of the day though, price talks. I was needing an upgrade as my PC began to die, so I picked up the cheapest decent option. It was about $200 cheaper than a comparable XTX.
Yeah I totally forgot to cover the Vram benefits of AMD in this video. But even still, I also chose the 4080. But usually, the XTX is $200 cheaper than the 4080. So this is interesting to hear for sure.
@ErockOnDeck It's likely a regional thing as I'm in Australia. I picked up the Gigabyte 4080 Gaming OC for $1,800 ($1,200 USD), and the Gigabyte Gaming OC and ASUS TUF for the 7900 XTX were $2,000. There were some lesser known brands around the $1,800 price or slightly cheaper, but nothing comparable.
thanks for the video, and i wish you a happy new year, i now also have a 4080 amp extreme, i had a 7900xtx before, but it has this hotspot problem, i had amd for the last 5 years and now an nvidia, i am very satisfied with it.
Great video and happy new year to you! I do wanna upgrade to the RTX 4080 but I'll wait till the price at $999 cause I for one think it should have been priced at...well technically it should have been $899 from the get-go IMO.
Thank you! Hey I saw another comment from you today that is a few weeks old now. You said Paul's Hardware sent you to me? Is this true? I didn't even know he knew who I was.
I will say that I went with the 7900XT power color when it hit a low $700 range for me for a few reasons. First thing I was able to do was substitute NVENC with AV1 (I know 4000 series can use it too), I can now use HDMI 2.1 and DP 2.1, Relive recording is a far cry better option over shadow play, and has better raw quality to use for editing for me, Raw rasterization horsepower, and lastly Higher VRAM availability. This is the first time since 2014 that I’ve bought an AMD model GPU. Overall it works great extremely well for the cost and feature set I need.
I'm honestly quite impressed with my XFX Merc XTX (for $1099). My overclock hit 17,600 in Port Royal, and surpassed the 4080 *in all the games I play* except Witcher 3. Even hit 119fps in RDR2 & 82 fps in CP2077 @ 4k Max/Ultra benchmark (native, no FSR). 5800X3D is my CPU. And of course, more X's == more better. 😁 Haven't had any issues or crashes, and runs quiet and cool after adjusting the fan curve.
@@danielwinkelhahn8305 I'm in a fortunate position where I don't sweat the power bill. Not to mention, I only game a handful of hours per week these days. ☺️ I also live in a cooler climate where we open the windows in the summer. Totally get why someone would stay away from the XTX or (600W+) 4090 if power usage is a concern. 👌
2 weeks ago i bought the 7900xtx . I had the 3080 and i play a lot of normal games and a lot of VR games. In normal games 7900 xtx nailed it but in VR, in 4 games i played (f1 22, Half life Alyx,Zero caliber and The thrill of the fight) , it was slower than my 3080. Then i read that this is drivers problem and they will fix it . I couldn't be sure when they fix and if they fix it so i returned the card and bought an 4080 and now i can play VR games super
Makes perfect sense to me. I would have done the same thing. I also returned my 7900 XTX and bought a 4080. I love my 4080. The XTX has had VR issues since launch. So I wouldn’t hood my breath on a fix anytime soon.
You just earned yourself a subscriber for not just barking on about the price, but actually laying out real facts about the cards. Your video feels fresh.
by the way, he didn't mention the VR situation with AMD cards, the 7900 XTX has equivalent performance to RTX 2060 because of a lot of issues right now. not to mention it's a big hassle to deal with AMD instability and issues, and OBS crashes..etc
I did not mention the VR issues in this video. However, I did mention those issues in my other video. ruclips.net/video/x80KvWsZeB8/видео.html&ab_channel=ErockOnDeck
Bought the 4080 coming from a 1080 HUGE upgrade. Yes it was pricey but after skipping 2 gens I was ready to spend around 1k for a new card that'll last me a couple of years.
As an AMD fan I really want to get the 7900XTX to go with my future 7800X3D but damm I have to agree at the same price 4080 is just a better card 😭😭 so unless AMD drops the price I will have to go with nVidia 😅😅
I have bought 1080, 2080ti, 3080, 3080ti, and 3090 past 5 years. They all fit in SFF cases. I wish 4080 or 4090 comes in smaller form factor. at least 4080 should be cased in smaller cooler.
The 4080 should be and could be smaller. I agree. Optimum Tech has a video where he put a 4090 founders edition into a SFF case. I’m sure you can make it work. :-)
Lol “obviously I bought the reference model and I regretted it” lol me too bro. Sadly lol. Im just glad we got the cards we like now. Great video bro. You speak on facts here and I’m glad you can be objective and show the real pros and cons
That’s true. Although up until now, we really haven’t seen higher vram be that impactful. But now in 2023, games do seem to be using more and more vram.
I went from 3090 to 7900 xtx. Returned it within 2 weeks. Had problems with AMD drivers. My games wouldn’t launch. The only way to play a game was to restart my pc and then open the game. If I wanted to play something else, the games wouldn’t launch. I uninstalled AMD and reinstalled NVIDIA drivers and my old 3090, stopped having issues with games not launching. I did enjoy the 7900xtx tho. FPS in 4k was amazing. MW2 I would get around 140fps, 180fps on shipment; and 105fps in WZ2
Raytracing is the future and a must have for me. Can't wait until we get some unreal 5 games. Playing those with raytracing will be so beautiful! 4080 was the clear choice in my budget range.
@@Prashantsharma-yg7kj Unless you want to play 8K, 16GB is enough for 4K,10GB is enough for 2K and 6GB for 1080p in 5 years. See RX 7600M XT, AMD also pair it with 8GB memory. The intel A380 has 6GB memory, A750 only 8GB and A770 also provides 8GB edition. If 16GB not enough for 4K, 7600M XT and A750 will be a 1600x900 card, A380 will be a 800x600 card. XSX is the strongest console in this generation, which operates on 10GB VRAM. Next gen console won't come until 2027 or 2028 according to Sony and Microsoft. If next gen console doesn't come, game developers have to optimze the VRAM usage for consoles.
I just bought and installed the PNY RTX 4080, and really it's not that much bigger than the Asus Tuf Gaming 3070 OC that I had, width wise...now, depth-wise, it does take up one more slot on one's case, but that's about it (also it is longer, length-wise..but not by much). All 4080's are not these huge, gigantic cards! As for the 12vhpwr adaptor: I upgraded to an 850watt ATX 3.0 psu, which has a direct 12vhpwr cord directly from the psu to the card. Very clean result, can't complain!
good vid, thanks. another aspect, and a rather important one for me, is power consumption and efficiency (idle, videoplayback, multimonitor and gaming). as well as thermals and noise.
Thank you. yeah I could have talked about those points a little more. I am sorry for that. The video was already a little lengthy as is. There is just so much to talk about. The short version is I had the 7900 XTX reference model. So some of the issues are not there on AIB models. I have never tested an AIB model so I cannot speak to that. But for the reference model, here is the info I have. The card has severe coil whine. It is very loud. The temperatures are not good and even now AMD confirms there is an official vapor chamber issue and they are offering free replacement cards. As for power consumption, the 7900 XTX pulled in over 100 watts while idle on the desktop. On top of that, the card went over the total board power in a few scenarios. The card is rated at 355w. So why was I seeing 375w and 385w at times? In short, the 4080 is quieter, cooler, and more efficient.
I'd say easily the 7900xtx. It has the same raster performance, slightly less RT performance, 8gb more vram, and still has fsr 3.0 Frame Gen on the horizon and all for $200 cheaper.....
I have both of them right now and deciding which to return...it pretty much comes down to either keep the 7900XTX for the higher FPS or keep the 4080 for the better RT/VR and cooler temps while gaming. 3DMarks on both of them, the 7900XTX was anywhere between 2% an 14% faster in certain graphics test...but I do like my temps in the high 50s/low 60s with the 4080 vs the 7900 about low/mid 70s. As for better RT performance...i have no idea what to look for and can't even really tell the difference in games if RT is on or off. I mainly play BF or CoD games with other random games thrown in. I'm still running an i7-7700K and can now play at 4K/144hz with either card vs the GTX1080 I replaced.
So I’ll tell you with that 7700k, you’re bottlenecking your system. Which if you are getting the performance you want, then great! But you can get even more performance later on if you upgrade your CPU. As for RT, you shouldn’t use RT in BF or COD. It’s a waste completely. However, something like Cyberpunk is a completely different story. I chose the 4080 personally.
Are you planning to still game at 1440p? If so, then 1440p will last you longer than 4K. But don’t expect hardware to last as long as the 1080 ti. Nvidia doesn’t make products like that anymore. They want repeat customers faster.
I ordered the Asus TUF 7900XTX because I don't stream and if I did, I'd use a $200 dedicated old office pc with some 6th Gen quad core cpu. The 7900XTX is simply faster where it counts. I'm not going to use RT in any online multi-player game, that's just stupid to shoot myself in the foot like that. I'm also not going to wait for developers to implement DLSS on my huge back catalog library of games that I intend to play on my 4K OLED TV. Rasterization is king and 7900XTX dominates in that regard. Also, AMD user for a long time and I've not experienced any major driver issues, in fact my experience with Nvidia has been worse so I tend to disregard any comments from people who never owned AMD GPUs. My previous AMD cards were X1900XTX, 4970, 5970, R9 290, Vega56, 5700XT and 6800XT. I've had 8800GT, GTX 680, 980 Ti and Titan X (Pascal) for Nvidia. Linux support especially has been horrible with failed desktop vsync issues, horrible tearing etc.
Planning to get the 4080 to pair with a 7800x3D when it releases next month, this is my first pc, do we know if that’s a good combo that won’t bottleneck or do we need to wait until it’s release for that information? Also do you think the 7800x3D will be scalped or will people be able to buy it easily straight from AMD?
Great content as always! Haha, was waiting for that new year video from you! I can't wait for the next gen, but I might try to get a 4090 in June of I get the bug before next gen lol. Really wish AMD would step up and stop being Nvidia Jr 😂 Good point, both companies are anti-consumer...but the market should equalize that eventually (unless all I know if economics is wrong... which could be haha)
@@ErockOnTech absolutely, love your content and as one who has partition switched large datasets here and there, gotta give some love to the other 🤣 The secret handshake lol jk
The main issue is that Ray Tracing is currently an Nvidia feature. They program it for their cards. Look at a Fortnite benchmark with lumen. That's unreal 5's software based Ray tracing and the 7900xtx does great.
I liked the intro where u talk about how not everyone is concerned with value. For me, its not like i dont care about value at all but at the end of the day I want high level premium components. Sometimes i just wanna know how good is the thing?! Not how good is the thing at x price lol.
Just bought a 4080 despite knowing its a bad deal. I just think the 4080 had the performance I was looking for, but I don't need a 4090. The 4070ti is a little weak for my use. I have a high refresh1440p ultrawide monitor and a 4k monitor. My goal is 120 fps at 1440p, 60 fps in 4k. I also want ray tracing, and DLSS 3. I was interested in the 7900XTX, but it looks like it has a lot of issues that will take a few months to fix. Also, I have always been happy with the Nvidia 80 serries cards in the past. I think I overpaid by about $200, but my time is worth something and I think the 4080 is in stock and is less buggy than other options. The smart thing to do is wait 4-6 months but I need a card now, the 4080 has the performance I need, and it seems to be the only product with no big issues.
It’s a good choice. That’s arguably the second best gaming card that has EVER existed. I paid $1800+ for a 3090 two years ago. As an enthusiast, I know that top performance will cost me. Enjoy it!
Yup! Came from 1070 and i7700k. 5.5 years old, 1080p monitor. Have chosen 4090FE, 13900k, 64GB, 4k at 144Hz. Expensive, yes. Do I need all of it? Somewhat (use several VMs, more RAM plus extra cores are welcome. ) The discussions mix several use cases: enthusiastic builds, average gamer, game sometimes, just MS office vs productivity (maybe video or compute/data/number crunch). All cases have their needs and budgets. From Office (900$ build) to enthusiastic builds (7000$). I did not e.g. upgrade my car for 10 years 🙃
you are right but i would put it like this: both cards are great. premium. and every single game out there today will run and look fantastic. (i own a 4080 btw)
I don't use DLSS or Ray Tracing hardly ever. So I don't see the point of spending 200+ bucks more for those feature. The RT on the AMD is good enough for the games I might want to turn it on for the "experience".
Well, to be fair, you can’t use DLSS if you have an AMD GPU. So you can’t say you “don’t” use it. The truth is you “can’t” use it. So you really don’t know if you would use it or not or if you would like it or not. As for ray tracing, again, if you’re on AMD then you may not know what you’re missing. The 6000 series cards were good for 1440p rasterization all day long. No question about it. But the ray tracing capabilities is a complete joke. It’s laughable how bad it is. The 7900 XTX admittedly has way better ray tracing than the 6000 series cards. This is very good. However, ray tracing will only continue to be added to more and more games. It’s very demanding. You need all the performance you can get. Lastly, for me it’s really about the principle of what you’re getting. For a relatively similar price, you’re getting a lot more features. As the old expression goes, “I rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.”
Thanks for the reply, To be fair I can say I "Don't" use it. See I build a lot of PC's and I have had and still do have 30 series cards in different builds. I don't and didn't use DLSS or RT hardly ever. So I know if I would or wouldn't use it or like it. As stated before the 7900XTX is good enough in RT, on the few titles I might want to use it on. "For a relatively similar price" I would also argue 20%-40% increase in price depending on the models isn't really similar, even with those features. Not to mention AMD has "Relatively Similar" features to DLSS and frame generation, in FSR 2 and FSR 3 set to release this year. I like Nvidia cards but their prices are out of control and that 200-400 bucks isn't relatively similar to me and does make a difference. The sales would seem to back that up. The microcenter down the road sold out of ~ 20 - 7900 XTX red devils in half a day and I still see the same 4080 stock sitting for days. For me and many others AMD is the better value.
@@TheHalfDemon hey if you want an AMD card don’t let me stop you. I won’t argue with you about it. I’m not paid by Nvidia to promote them. So if you don’t like them or what they’re doing, then that’s cool with me man. All I’ll say is when you use “value” and we are talking about $1000+ on a product that mainly let you play video games; lol it’s a bit silly. Also, “value” is apparently subjective because I think the better value is in the 4080. You get access to basically everything AMD has and more. I don’t know if you watched the chart at 12:24 but to me that is a clear picture of all you miss with AMD. But hey, you personally don’t care about that stuff. That’s fine. No complaints here.
I have the 4080 FE and its not big at all, it fits easily in my fractal north case (medium size case) Also using the new corsair shift psu with the new gen adaptor (no dongles) The 4080 is the coolest GPU I've ever owned. (60c max on most games). Love it!
Excellent video. I chose the 4080 because I came to the same conclusion; it is the better over all package. It was worth the extra $$$ to get DLSS + ray tracing + FSR + frame generation and also to not have to wait until AMD got their shit together on the XTX. Interestingly enough, ray tracing wasn't a big deal to me or much of a deciding factor. I didn't really care about it ...until I had it.
Yes the amdonkeys say u dont need rt. Bro then u dont need latest gpu as well. Stick to 6700xt. Rt is here to stay n it’s only going to get heavier. Unfortunately with amd u have to compromise a lot. N then u have fg. Turn that on n its a blood bath

Both companies suck, you're the donkey for fanboying, whatever your excuse is. Never mind the point Erock made very saliently, no games these days even work right, many never get fixed. Yeah to me it’s a no contest at this point. Very seriously don’t think I will ever trust AMD again with my money. The 5700xt burned me badly and every card, with the expecting of the 6900xt, seems to be a bust. I don’t want be/sound closed minded but I just don’t have a lot of time to be juggling graphics cards. Great review! My 4080 sits inside a DIY - Cuboid R (maybe you wanna look it up for a laugh 🤣). I'm glad you came around to see that Nvidia is interested in holding the market share down with quality. That's AMD's biggest area of growth.
Hey - really appreicate this video and how you showed the pointlessness of campaigning for AMD or nvidia as a consumer. I liked how you shows the data you choose to present will alter how good each side is. One thing I which reviewers like yourself would show with Frame Generation is also a bar labeled "Latency" so that newcomers to the approach can understand the Frame Generation has the cost of increased latency which isn't the case with upscalers.
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. I intend on doing a full video on Frame Generation here in the coming weeks. Right now, I do not have a latency tester of any kind. But maybe that will change by then.
Got the 4080 because of blender support is much better. I hardly use ray tracing so if I didn’t use blender a lot then I would be getting the 7900xtx since I mostly play horror games and since most of them are dark as heck, I hardly see a reason to use ray tracing
There is definitely an argument to be made that AMD GPU'S are superior if you only do gaming. If you dont need/care about Nvidias Raytracing etc. But for rendering, especially Blender it's definitely Nvidia. Tho I heard AMD has driver issues, but dunno how extensive they can be.
@@Lyu-Phy AMD definitely has driver issues. There is a reason why so many gamers mention it when you talk about AMD GPUs. AMD already released a driver update to fix some of the issues with the 7900 XTX. If you look at the patch notes they have a section called “known issues.” That is a list of issues they are planning to fix with future driver updates.
good video. what do you think of the msi rtx 4080 suprim x?? I'm going to buy a 4080 next week and decided on this one. the other card i was thinking about was the zotac gaming rtx 4080 trinity oc. it looked like the zotac was slightly higher fps out of the box but the msi suprim is the msi flagship and I think it can be overclocked to be better if need to be, which I don't think I will need to overclock it any time soon. I have a i7 11700k with 32gb ram, upgrading from a zotac 2080 ti amp extreme. the msi suprim looks like a really well-built card and it's all metal.
unfortunately, i didn't end up getting the suprim x as it cost slightly more than what I ended up having to spend so I had to go with the 4080-gigabyte gaming oc instead. but I'm still liking this one though it's great. i just wish it had 20gb vram not that it really needs it but would be nice for when it was needed for whatever.@@darthstrukt
I've had both cards recently, 2 different 7900xtx and a Asus tuf RTX 4080. I started with a reference 7900xtx because that's the card I wanted for the right price in my mind at $999. I got it on launch and liked it but the card was reaching 110c junction temps. I finally returned it last week and wanted another 7900xtx but they had none in stock at microcenter since launch so I got the 4080. This 4080 was $1399. Wasn't happy about the price. Yesterday I see online that the same microcenter gets in more 7900xtx and they have the red devil model so I go pick one up for $1,049. I'll be returning the RTX 4080 and saving a couple hundred.
@@ErockOnTech yes I have the Red Devil 7900xtx. Returned the 4080.. The 7900xtx is doing great! Stays cool and gives great fps at max settings 4k in all games I play. The $1,049 price tag is best part compared to the 4080 I had before.
@@cjpp78ytube ok great! I’m happy you’re happy with it. That’s the most important thing above all else. It’s your PC. So as long as you’re happy with it, then fantastic!
i just got an 7900 xtx. I will say from my own experience that when it works that it works like a charm. Drivers are a huge issue though. One moment the game is performing well over 100 fps and the next the game crashes. This can happen every 20 minutes. I didn't have this problem when I had the 2080ti, before i gave that card to my buddy since he needed a computer. If I could go back in time, I'd spend the extra $200 on the 4080, since I definitely couldn't get the 4090. Until it stops being crash happy, drivers randomly shutting down, i won't recommend the 7900 xtx to anyone.
Outside of ray tracing, it seems like a toss up on which of these is superior. Though with how expensive they are it doesn't seem worth getting one of the latest gen cards right now.
I wanted to go with NVIDIA but I decided to go with AMD 7900 XTX. I have a multi monitor setup and my seconf monitor is a 4k TV that has been having issues with my NVIDIA 3080 and I see online that AMD generally supports multi monitor setups better. I found a 7900XTX open box at Best Buy for $800 and choose that as I was considering a 7900XT or 6950XT.
How is the 7900 XTX working for you? That’s a great deal on a 7900 XTX. I also have a tv as a monitor and a normal PC monitor as a secondary display. I was using the 3080. Now I use the 4080. I had no monitor issues at all with my 3080. I currently have no monitor issues at all with my 4080. I’ve heard of these monitor issues. Are you putting your PC to sleep? Or are you completely powering it down?
@@ErockOnTech I really like the card but it gets really loud. I bought the Gigabyte but looks like I should have got the red devil. I don't like powering down and put my pc to sleep. I have since replaced the TV with a 43" Samsung Neo G7 which is really nice and is an actual monitor. The issue now is that the screen artifacts when I wake it from sleep and the fix is to put it back to sleep and wake it again, then the artifacting is gone. Looking at adding a lot more fans to my Corsair 5000 case to help quite the system.
Said this before, will say it again, I'd take the 4080 over the XTX 7900 because of a myriad of reasons, but it mostly comes to this: $200 at this price range isn't enough to sacrifice the benefits from productivity work, the ray tracing and the DLSS, whether or not I end up using any of it. I've also heard too many horror stories from my friends about the AMD drivers, and I definitely agree with you, it's not aging like fine wine, it's just getting to the point where it should have been from the start, I'm not paying $1000 to get a better product months or years down the road.
Thank you! I have a few people in my community that really see the “fine wine” as a good thing. It’s really not. By time the performance gets where it should have been from the start, the card will be hundreds of dollars cheaper and paired with a bundle of free games. It’s a really bad price for what you currently get.
Everyone is different. Some people are super frame sensitive. Take Hardware Unbox. He said anything below 90 fps has too many stutters for him. Many people in my Discord have said the same thing.
4080 costs 50% more, but as we see here it has 100% more ray tracing performance. If I had enough money I would choose 4080 over 7900 xtx. So instead I bought a used rtx 3090 which has raytracing performance close to 7900 xtx at half the cost of a new 7900 xtx.
I think we all agree that the 4090 is king (price aside). If we go one step down, red vs green is on average the same raster performance. If one wins over the other, the +fps are a nice addition, but it is like 90 vs 120 fps. All playable. The only major difference is RT. I personally like it (FC 6, CP 2077). Therefore I would take the 4080. (Since prices are all over the place and vary from region to region it would only be a major factor if one would be 50% of the other or so. ) Interesting topic might be long-term value. What do I get for my card in 3 or 4 years if I change next time?
That would be an interesting topic for sure. You’re also correct about the regions and pricing. I’m getting tired of talking about pricing because nothing I say resonates with everyone. One person can say “it’s not that bad for what you get.” While another person says “these are the worst prices I’ve ever seen!” They are both in different regions. I wish pricing was more standard.
I got 7900xtx as dropped to 900 and sold my 3700. As need 16gb min and i found it 300 cheaper than 4800 and 8gb more ram and bow fsr 3 csn comete with nvidea. Main thing is dont like the new poer connectors on nvidea. They should bith be 599 retail and 4900 9999 max
Staying on the cutting edge cost money. Back in 2006 a 8800 ultra was $800 ($1200 today) 8800 gtx was $600 ($900 today) From the beginning high end cards have always been expensive.
@@kcfreetime these are the people who complain there too much ice in ice cream or not enough chocolate in chocolate bars ! Nothing better todo then complain about mundane shit ! They want the best but they don’t expect to pay the price for the best !
Nice video, but honestly you seemed a bit biased in a lot of the way you said/presented things lol (I assumed based on your personal experience), you also missed the glaring gap in VRAM as a pro for the 7900 XTX which will increasingly become more and more relevant as titles eat more of it up. Some examples of some biases I saw in case you care for detailed feedback: you said you wouldn't discuss price even though price is always a consideration, then you pointed out that the XTX is higher in price on AIBs anyways while only pointing out the 4080 MSRP in the next screen when their AIB pricing is also nuts... You also pointed to the vapor chamber issue at length which was a "at launch" problem mainly and not an issue with the AIBs at all which most people will end up buying from, I haven't heard anyone mention it on any newer reference model cards released, but you also basically glossed over and minimized cables catching fire as if 50 instances is not a significant sample size. Personally I'd rather RMA the card and get the cooling apparatus fixed vs having my system randomly catch fire just saying. The rest of your points were accurate though, especially about the price gouging happening right now from both ends, hopefully intel comes out with something competitive in the next few years.
As for VRAM, I do regret that. That was an honest mistake. I published the video and immediately realized I left that out. You’re completely right. That is a benefit in favor of the XTX. No doubt about it. As for pricing, I mainly meant I wasn’t going to harp on how bad GPU prices are. That’s why I put the text on screen that said “GPU prices suck. We know already.” This had to do with this time period of my life and the channel. My Discord and RUclips comments were a broken record. Everyone was constantly saying how bad all GPU prices were. I had already covered GPU prices in other videos. No matter how I said it or what I said, someone had an issue. So that was my mindset when I said that. When I made the comparison about the XTX AIB card pricing, I was merely trying to coney that if you buy an AIB card, then you’re paying basically the same price as a base 4080. Perhaps I could have worded that better. I mentioned the cables catching fire. I did say that was a point of concern. I didn’t harp on it because respectively, no, 50 cases is not a big number. At the time of that filming, the burning cables were only on 4090s. That was it. According to research I did at that time, there were a little over 100k confirmed 4090s sold. So if true, then 50 out of 100k is not a lot at all. Also, just like you stated with the vapor chamber issue, the cable issue is similar. It basically hasn’t happened since then. At the time of filming, the vapor chamber was a massive issue. It was just discovered. You can easily say now that it’s “a launch issue.” But look at the time stamp on my video. We were still close to launch at that time and like I said, the information had just been confirmed about the vapor chamber. We didn’t know how bad it would or would not go on to be. It’s funny you call me bias. I just got another comment on this same video about how objective and non-bias I was lol 😂. Perception is everything I guess haha. Thanks for the feedback though.
Not a fanboy of either of these companies right now but I found it odd when you mentioned the 4080 has better Ray Tracing performance but didn’t talk about how the 7900 XTX actually has equal (or slightly better) Ray Tracing performance per dollar spent. That’s something I think consumers are more interested in than base performance, and I think this is important to point out because now that Nvidia is flatly losing in price to performance in pure rasterization they’re now using things like Ray Tracing and DLSS Support to justify their high prices. Artificially boosting the perception of Nvidia’s Ray Tracing capabilities by focusing solely on pure performance instead of price to performance in my mind only reinforces these predatory pricing practices. The truth is that the gap has basically closed (on price to performance within a few percentage points overall) when it comes to Ray Tracing. And I really don’t say this to fanboy AMD. The closer these companies are in both performance AND performance per dollar, the more competitively they’ll have to price their products as they’ll no longer be able to justify insane premiums. But this only works if media people like you can get the word out and people have more than marketing and drooling fanboys to go off of before making their decision. And I’ll just end with clarifying that this is a small niggle with the video. Overall I enjoyed it. I think you did a great job. I just think you could have been a little more precise in this specific section. YES, 4080 has better Raytracing. BUT, it’s 20% more expensive for equal to or less than 20% more Raytracing performance (on average across multiple titles).
So I see your point. But please try and see my position. Unless I make multiple videos on the same topic or make one very long video, then some comparisons and key points will naturally be missed. There will always be people looking for more information than what I may provide, or what I am even able to provide. Some information I did not cover due to the same information was covered in the other dedicated videos. But for the price to performance comparison, hear me out out on this. I can give those numbers but as a creator with an audience in many different countries, I've come to understand those numbers alienate more than half my audience. I'm in America. So what I would likely do is simply use the USD MSRP to discuss these details. But if you're outside of America, which at least half my audience is, then those numbers are not accurate for you. Before you say "well the percentages scale", I would say not always. I have comments, even on this very video now, that say in other markets, the 7900 XTX is hundreds more expensive than a 4080. That is crazy to me. But it is the reality of the situation. So for those users, any talk about price to performance or cost per frame would be useless and inaccurate. Lastly, I have said in multiple videos now that both cards are over priced and these prices are dumb. I have also said it is best to wait for prices to fall before making any purchasing decision. But ultimately, you are the steward of your money. Not me or any other RUclipsr. Regardless of how much you pay for the cost of each frame, the same questions remain. Are you okay paying these prices in general? Can you afford it? If you buy the better value option, and assuming it is the 7900 XTX, are you okay giving up the other benefits of Nvidia? These are personal decisions. I feel there is more to consider outside of cost per frame. I think this is true for both rasterization and RT. I see your point entirely however. Perhaps, I should at least mention cost per frame for the people in my market or similar markets and maybe preface it with, "this may not apply to all markets" or something like that.
@@ErockOnTech Thanks for the response. Solid reply. I did make the assumption that percentages scaled across the world and you’re right, that’s dumb. I think just a line or two in the script would be fine, like “yes, the 4080 has better ray tracing, but unless you’re able to find it for less than 20% more than the 7900XTX, you’re not really gaining extra value per dollar, thus your decision at that point should be dependent on other factors such as Content Creation or Frame Generation”. Again, this was a very small nitpick. It’s just something a lot of reviewers have been doing lately and it’s been bothering me. Everyone keeps parroting that Nvidia has better Raytracing with few if any caveats, when at least considering price-to-performance at US MSRP, that’s just not really the case based on their own benchmarks. Breaking down these myths, in my opinion, is important in dismantling these companies justifications for high prices, at least for NVIDIA in this case. That was my point. I obviously respect and agree with all that you said about waiting to buy until ALL prices are lowered. I didn’t mean to imply that you weren’t making that argument; I meant that this would simply aid in making that argument even further. But if you think pricing differences around the world make this too complicated or even redundant, I do totally understand. I was considering the US market and the prices I was seeing locally when I made my comment, which as you said is not the same considerations you have to make for your channel.
@@dylanschnabel4859 Excellent discussion and I think this is a great way to have a proper conversation online. Thank you for that. Yeah I will try and find a way to mention price to performance in the future.
I like how the power cable gets downplayed while the issue was never resolved, while the vapor chamber was resolved and it's the worst thing ever. Lol.
Yeah I covered power consumption in my 7900 XTX video. I totally forgot about it here. But the short version is the 4080 is way more efficient. Also, the 4080’s total board power is only 320 watts. It only hits it under heavy load. It never exceeds it. But the 7900 XTX hits 100w or more while idle. It often exceeded the total board power.
I got a 7900xtx, not really too happy about this generation because of these prices. I think these prices are here to stay, gaming has gotten so big now. I don't think we are gonna see top cards at $500-$700 ever again. If you want raytracing get a 4080, you play warzone get a 7900xtx.
How has your experience so far with the 7900xtx been? Mine just came in the mail and I'm super stoked about it! Edit: I'm coming from having a 1070ti GTX.
All good points. About the 4080 I just think that 16g will not keep this card as a 4k card for long. It will be like the 3080, nvidia have deliberatly limited that vram to force an upgrade next gen. Only card that has longetivity is the 4090..xtx has it too but not with rt. Also i am in the market for either and on a 3080 10g right now. Really a tough decision because i see the trap with NVIDIA pricing. But can tell you are jaded by AMD and that is something that alot of gamers have complained about with Amd. Update - got the 4080 for the pricing the rt was just not up to speed with the xtx. Like already out the box i couldnt play witcher 3 or cyberpunk maxed and other heavy rt games.. Rachet and clank just recently put the xtx on its knees with rt.
The question is not "can i afford it" it's whether there is enough value to purchase these cards over previous generation, or better use of your money. Honestly none of current pricing makes sense, there's no improvement in price/perf ratio. 4080 sucks. 7900xtx sucks. 7900xt sucks less in Canada, given it's a good 30% cheaper than the 4080 and xtx.
In my country of Serbia , the 4080 costs 300 euros ( 330 dollars ) more , so in no way shape or form could I justify buying it over the rx 7900 xtx , I personally do not care about ray tracing so the 7900 xtx price to performance is the clear winner to me , it also has 8 more gb of vram compared to the 4080 .
Got a 7900xtx… it went bad right aaay sent it back and got a 4080. Games like destiny 2 are 20 FPS faster on 7900. 3D mark faster by a lot. Other games where I turn on ray traci g or dlss3 4080 better. I am happier with the 4080 but for basic games the 7900XTX is quite faster.
Yeah the 7900 XTX is faster in raster generally speaking. However, it is game dependent. I showed it in one of my videos. Most games are faster on the 7900 XTX. However, some games are faster with the 4080. But then when you factor in RT, DLSS, and power efficiency; the 4080 is better.
Out of stock doesn’t always mean it’s selling well. It could also be low inventory. On launch day, my Microcenter only had 35 XTX cards. That’s not a lot.
I've almost exclusively owned NVidia GPUs and currently have a RTX 2070 Super in my pc. The last 2 generations have turned me off from NVidia the company more so then the product and so now I am struggling to decide what to buy. I will likely buy the 7900 XTX but am waiting for things to normalize a little before I take the plunge. Then it's a matter of which platform to build on, AM5 or LGA 1700. (or maybe just get the AM4 5800X3D)

I'm real happy with my 4080 purchase, here in australia the 7900 XTX and the 4080 vary from being the exact same price to the xtx only being 50-100 usd cheaper, so 4080 was a no brainer especially with the productivity benefits. plus i got mine on sale for close enough to the msrp and its pretty rare for any relatively new card to go for the msrp here
Great to hear! Thanks for the support on the video! I know prices are bad. But at least you get a very solid product when you choose to buy.

facts
Hmmm....
💯 agreed. Echoes my comment above.

I understand. I’m happy it all works well for you.

Those are benefits for sure. It depends on your use case I suppose.
Lol, fsr 3 hasn't even come out, god knows when it does, and if/when it does, it will be inferior to Nvidia, just like fsr 2.0 Vs dlss
Great video! What about VR performance? Which is outright better?
Great video !! Need more honest reviews like this!! Along with hardware unboxed and Daniel Owen's
Thank you! I appreciate it!
I chose the 4080 personally.

on the verge of retiring my 1080ti for a 4080, but was wondering if 16gb vram will last me as long as the 11gb on the 1080ti did at 1440p
Enjoy it!

Thanks for the reply,
To be fair I can say I "Don't" use it.
"For a relatively similar price"
I would also argue 20%-40% increase in price depending on the models isn't really similar, even with those features.
Is there a significant difference in VR performance?
Yes 100%. Nvidia is way better.
I have the 4080 FE and its not big at all, it fits easily in my fractal north case (medium size case) Also using the new corsair shift psu with the new gen adaptor (no dongles) The 4080 is the coolest GPU I've ever owned. (60c max on most games). Love it!
Thats amazing!

I understand. Thanks for the feedback.
AMD already released a driver update to fix some of the issues with the 7900 XTX. good video. what do you think of the msi rtx 4080 suprim x?? I'm going to buy a 4080 next week and decided on this one. the other card i was thinking about was the zotac gaming rtx 4080 trinity oc. it looked like the zotac was slightly higher fps out of the box but the msi suprim is the msi flagship and I think it can be overclocked to be better if need to be, which I don't think I will need to overclock it any time soon. I have a i7 11700k with 32gb ram, upgrading from a zotac 2080 ti amp extreme. the msi suprim looks like a really well-built card and it's all metal.

I'll be returning the RTX 4080 and saving a couple hundred.

i just got an 7900 xtx. I am in the market for one or the other but when do you think the price would go down if ever? I don't want to wait too long
Outside of ray tracing, it seems like a toss up on which of these is superior.

@@joaquinm7502 yeah my 7900 XTX was super loud. I couldn’t stand it. As for the sleep/wake issue, have you tried a new cable?
Someone answer me this if you’re OK with 60fps and above is DLSS even really relevant? Like for me 60 FPS ultra settings at 4K is really all I need.
Everyone is different. Some people are super frame sensitive. Take Hardware Unbox. He said anything below 90 fps has too many stutters for him. Many people in my Discord have said the same thing.
Then why can't they give me a aged fine wine in the first place?
Exactly!

4080. 100%.
@@ErockOnTech thank u
4080 costs 50% more, but as we see here it has 100% more ray tracing performance. If I had enough money I would choose 4080 over 7900 xtx. So instead I bought a used rtx 3090 which has raytracing performance close to 7900 xtx at half the cost of a new 7900 xtx.
That’s a good deal.
@@ErockOnTech thanks
I think we all agree that the 4090 is king (price aside).
If we go one step down, red vs green is on average the same raster performance. If one wins over the other, the +fps are a nice addition, but it is like 90 vs 120 fps. All playable. The only major difference is RT. I personally like it (FC 6, CP 2077).
Therefore I would take the 4080.
(Since prices are all over the place and vary from region to region it would only be a major factor if one would be 50% of the other or so. )
Interesting topic might be long-term value.
If you purchase either one of those for the prices they're at right now you're just enabling Nvidia and AMD to justify these insane pricing tactics.

Lol.
Nice fair video bro. Just power consumption.

All good points. About the 4080 I just think that 16g will not keep this card as a 4k card for long. It will be like the 3080, nvidia have deliberatly limited that vram to force an upgrade next gen. Only card that has longetivity is the 4090..xtx has it too but not with rt.

In your situation, I would agree that the XTX is the better buy for sure!
The answer is simple, neither they are stagnation products on price to performance.
I understand.
Erm, xtx is almost entirely out of stock in Europe, and the cheapest is somewhere around 1300 eur. The XT version is 1k eur and available, though.
All I can say is make sure you buy an AIB model of the 7900 XTX. The reference model has so many issues.
With AM5 u can upgrade the cpu in the future. 13th Intel Generation ist the last one that uses 1700 Socket now.
@@masc4361 I'm really sold on the 7800x3d now. Waiting for some official benchmarks closer to launch.
@@BraceDeville yeah it's such a tough decision. I'm considering getting a 13600k in combination with a 4080. Since weeks i am watching all benchmarks videos etc. but i still can't decide. Its more difficult with those X3D CPUs now 😅
