@@MrsLadyLobster i try to, I have bad habit of turning my piano practice into work- "i need to get better at this before I can have fun" sort of mentality. I always remind myself to improvise a bit after every practice tho
It's good that you're intentionally making time for the fun parts of piano, but you're still dedicated to improving your technical skills. What's funny is I never was that structured. I would get pretty much scolded for improvising too much when doing piano lesson homework lol. I'm proud of you that you're so focused on finding the balance of improvement and enjoyment :)
This is very similar to how I taught myself improv years ago, especially the part about experimenting! This is an outstanding video, the information is presented very well, and I'm positive it will be helpful to anybody who watches :)
I've also been practicing improv on piano. I force myself to improv on the black keys because it's harder😅 But it's fun when I'm finally in the zone and grooving! 😃
I'm so glad that you're venturing into the black key territory! I agree, it's harder, even now for me, but I find that I get some of the most beautiful melodies. How long have you been playing piano?
@@MrsLadyLobster thank you, too. :) No, I haven't played piano for long. I am very beginner and self-internet-taught. I like that you ask. I have been playing the electric bass-guitar for many years as an amateur. I love music. Funk, rock, alternative, electro, trip-hop, metal, abient and tons more.
Wow! Congratulations! Good luck on your piano journey :) Music is amazing, and it's so cool that you play the electric bass-guitar. I love the extra vibrations that the instrument provides in songs. One day I'd love to learn either guitar or bass... do you have any tips?
@@MrsLadyLobster Yes, the bass is unique in vibrations. Thanks for wishing me! Piano is totally different so I needed to try it and now I am excited. Bass is so cool and I think it could be a better choice for you because guitar is more similar to piano in many ways. My tip about bass is to keep the groove going no matter what. Playing repetitively is nice. And it's more preferable to play on the kick drum and let the snare breathe if this suits in the song. In general, I believe that the bass becomes more impressive when your phrases have nice and clever pauses. And ghost notes. But even the basslines without any pauses have a different charm. Also, by applying a fat and full in sound effect you can play even just one or two notes without being boring or inadequate. Bass is power.
Hello @xxfranknittyxx2270! That's a great question! For me, I found chord charts of my favorite songs and learned to play them on the piano. I recommend this because it helped me to become more familiar with different note relationships. I also spent a ton of time experimenting with different chords and rhythms. My favorite spot for chords is www.ultimate-guitar.com/ and I get most of my charts from here for free :) Playing by ear is such an awesome skill to develop! Does this help?
Yep! I started when I was 7, but little did we know that the main piano teacher I had didn't find this important. I can read sheet music fine, but I have difficulty playing music pieces without practice (in other words, my sightreading is pretty rough).
very cool, improv is dope because you have an effectively limitless repertoire, you can just play and play without any sheets
Yes, I love improv, it's so so amazing! Do you do it often?

@MrsLadyLobster I've been playing for around 20 years. But I'm not a master. I continue to branch out and learn new things like jazz improv. 😊
The video is not only useful, but it's also fun by the way you explain.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching :) Have you played piano for long?
