Thank you!! People who sew tend to be visual learners and written instructions are all well and good, but there's nothing like having a professional show ( sew) you up close and personal :). HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!
This helps a lot. I just shortened some sleeves on a tee shirt, but sewed two lines to imitate the original hem. I'll have to buy one of those double needles, and give that a try. New toy... Yay!
Just got a new sewing machine and was so intimidated by it even more so seeing the dual needle glad to know it’s easy to use will make my school project a lot more professional
I been watching lots of RUclips video how to do this but that neglected to say one thread not going to that same hook as other, I could not figure out why my thread will not sew. Thanks a lot
Wonderful !!! Thank you so much ! IT is a lot easier than setting up the serger coverstitch ! Great video and as a visual learner it is fantastic to watch !

Thank you! I'm hemming a pair of pants for work tomorrow so this is perfect! I normally just use a single straight stitch as I never knew how to set this up!
Dear Professor, First time I've seen your videos....Subscribed instantaneously....immediate, unthinking, involuntarily! Wonderful instructional video. Crisp , well framed camera work. Thoughtful, well scripted dialogue. Bright and cheery. I have a bunch'a vids on YT and yours are an inspiration. Thank you!

Great video. Detailed information without too much fluff. It still looks like magical witchcraft to me, I have no idea how the sewing machine does this on the bobbin side. I will just assume there are fairies under there doing it and give it a whirl. Thanks!
Omgosh I DID wonder what that thing was. I just thought it was a spare for when I inevitably broke the first one! 😂 thank you so much for your channel. Ive learned SO much from you. 😙😙😙
Thanks for sharing this video but i have to say in some machine the zigzag doesn't works , like in my machine i only can do this in standard mood so it's different in some machines .
Wow! Thanks so much for this video. I've been sewing for over 60 years and have NEVER sewn with a twin needle, although they have always come with my machine. I also have a serger, so I guess I thought I'd never need to use my twin needle. But I guarantee I'll be using it to hem my t-shirt this afternoon! I did watch another video right before watching yours...on how to use a twin needle. [Yours is sooooo much better :-)] And she recommended using a 1/2" stretchy iron on stabilizer on the inside of the hem before turning it to stitch the hem. It keeps the fabric from puckering or stretching while sewing. Just thought I'd throw that info in, since I see a couple of questions below referencing that problem. Oh my gosh...I'm subscribing right now to your YT channel. Your videos are excellent. Great camera angles and wonderful dialogue! An old dog can learn new tricks! :-)
I just love you tutorials. They have helped me with so many projects:). I have a question please. I am wondering which width of twin needle to use for what. Look forward to your guidance.
it really depends on the project. something like denim and making jeans, you'll want a wider width while I might do something more narrow for a bathing suit.
Thanks, I’ve tried this on my project. It’s super easy but I’m finding my right needle is skipping stitches. How can I avoid this? I’m using a thickish stretch fabric.
My machine came with a twin needle, however I’m not sure if it is OK to use with my jersey knit. Do I need to get a special needle just like I do for single needles? Thanks!
This was great!! Thank you so much! Does anyone know what that lacey "loopy" stitch is that they do on the wrong side of t-shirt ribbing hem? I assume it's done with a twin needle since on the front there are two rows of single stitching and on the back is that stitch I described (sort of like cursive lower-case "L"s, if you will...🤔)
Could be a cover stitch, it's done with a cover stitch machine. It is similar to the double stitch. The cover stitch machine is different from a serger.
@@barbaraferron7994 OH hey, thank you!! I've pasted your comment into my notes on that project I was working on for when I revisit it! 😊 Really appreciate it.
that's an interesting issue, I haven't seen yet. So the right needle is skipping stitches? It could be a bobbin problem, as in the bobbin isn't catching the right needle's thread so that stitch just pulls out. Maybe try adjusting the bobbin tension and see if that helps.
Thank you for your advice! I've got a new machine and I still don't know where to adjust the bobbin tension, anyway, I'll give it a try. By the way, I have tried the same needles on non-elastic fabric and it works. So even if "jersey" is written on the box it is not compatible with jersey. Weird.
Does your sewing machine have a stretch fabric option? Some don't. That could be your problem.... It should be on the thread length selector, mine goes 0-1-2-3-4-s.
@@ProfessorPincushion I have the same issue. Right side stitches skip. I will look to see if my bobbin tension can be adjusted. Should it be tighter or looser? Also, the thread tension should remain normal (mine is usually 4)?
I've been looking for this for so long!! Did not want to have to go buy a cover stitch machine and haven't been able to figure out how to do a cover stitch on my serger! Can you link the needle you bought and/or the attachment for the second spool of thread?
The needle was picked up at JoAnn's in their needle department. The attachment came with my sewing machine. If you have a local sewing machine shop, they might be able to direct you on your particular machine attachments.
I'm new to all this sewing stuff, so when you say "bobbin thread" are you the color of one spool or the other, or is it supposed to be a different color?
yes, I'd say you could but if you're doing it on a single layer of fabric, it might be difficult if the fabric doesn't have much stabilization and it might not lie flat and smooth. I'd try it on a scrap first.
+artandneedlework I just did a 2.5 length and the width is 0 or whatever it normally is when doing a straight stitch. You can also experiment on using the double needle with some of your sewing machine's decorative stitches.
My normal upper thread tension is around a 4. With this type of fabric, you would probably want to lower it a little so I'd try a 3. But you should practice on scraps first as I'm sure all machines are different.
Hi I do this often but last time I tried to sew with a twin needle the fabric was not laying flat in the middle of the stitching I tried any possible tread tension but it really was impossible to find the correct tension. It was very lightweight knitted fabric. Do you have any tips ore tricks?
I have a dress shirt that has a coverstitch all the way down the sleeve. The sleeves only have that one seam. I can't figure out how they did that! Any ideas? Thanks for your great videos :)
hmmm...maybe they do it with an actual coverstitch machine and not a sewing machine. So it's doing the seam and double stitch at the same time. How they're able to do it for such a narrow tube of fabric does boggle the mind :)
I suspect they are using a coverstitch machine. My guess is some special one where the stitching direction is 90 degrees off from usual, allowing the sleeve to be fed onto the bed as it's stitched. I wonder! Thanks for the response :)
Professor Pincushion hey, since someone else also asked... I'm having the same issue, I suspected bobbin tension, but then found that my machine didn't support adjusting tension on the bobbin 😑 is there anything I can do to get a nicer looking twin needle stitch or should I give up?
My bobbin thread isn't a zig-zag. Consequently, it's not very stretchy. I am going to play around with wider twin needles, but for my machine (Brother SM2700) it's apparently a big no-no to adjust bobbin tension. Any other tips for this problem?
It sounds more like you need to lengthen your stitch length. Try a 4.0. You can go wider with the twin needle for the cover stitch. Just make sure the needle isn't wider than 6 or 7 mm. Make sure your needle is in the center position. On my Brother I can go 7.0. Just don't use the wider twin needles for your decorative stitches. +Kim Bankston I've had this issue before too, it really depends on the fabric you're using as some do better than others. When I was sewing on bathing suit fabric, I stitched it with tissue paper on top of the fabric and it seemed to really help :)
My problem when doing this is the material tends to pucker, like I was making a pin tuck. I am trying to hem some knit pants and it does it every time. Any other suggestion? I have tried stabilizer and wonder under. Going to the store for some wooly nylon thread. And I use a ballpoint needle as well.
it usually happens because the fabric isn't stable enough, like with lightweight or stretchy fabrics. Unfortunately, the only way I know how to fix this is with a sticky stabilizer to hold it flat. If that still didn't work for you then I don't know. :(
maybe get a tear away lightweight stabilizer to put on the backside of the fabric. This sometimes happens with stretchy fabric because it just doesn't have enough stabilization. After you do your stitch, just tear the stabilizer off.
Hi I have problem I am using a twin needles size 2 for hemming Hearst fabric my problem is the bobbin keeps on gathering the fabric and end up the needles are stuck and can't keep sewing. I am new to twin needles actually using bernina machine it frustrated me as I can't find any help in the net too!
it could be your fabric is too lightweight. You can try lowering the thread tension or if that fails, try adding a stabilizer on the wrong side of the hem and that should help
unfortunately, a sewing machine isn't going to give you really thick lines so it's not going to stand out that much. You might want to find a local company that does custom embroidery which will probably give you more of a look that you want. If you're looking for on the cheap, diy, you could also do fabric paint or create your own iron on applique with fabric and then use the sewing machine to finish the fabric edges.
Yes, it will tunnel, particularly on knits. Cut a strip of iron-on water soluble to line the hem to the bottom along the fabric cut line, also makes flipping the hemline precise. Or, starch it well before sewing. Best of luck Marie.
A great video i was just wondering it doesn't say i can use a twin needle on my machine do you think i could still use it .It would save me so much more work if I could
As long as your machine does a zig zag stitch you should try it. If you don't have a second spool pin, try putting the second spool of thread in a mug next to the sewing machine. good luck! :)

For sewing lightweight jersey fabric, does the twin needle need to be a stretch/jersey twin needle? Or will a standard twin needle work?
Must be stretch which is a ball point needle because it will push fabric aside and penetrate without tearing fabric.
