This is such a funny coincidence, cause I'm just now finishing plying the most beautifully blue dyed shetland wool from Regenbogenwolle! It is also sooooo soft and pretty! Finishing a yarn with you feels a bit special 😅
Thanks for the reference❤ I am starting to collect all sorts of spindles and did not know this German website. Gotta have to add in a few braids too! Hugs from Provence, Adrien 🎊
Wow, that braid and your long draw spinning were made for each other! Absolutely gorgeous yarn, and a little bit of struggle always adds extra beauty to it too! ❤
😂it never occurred to me to pause a plying bracelet and saving my finger from dying on my hand! That was awesome and your yarn is deliciously squishy!!❤
The yarn turned out beautifully! I really love a supported long draw myself. I started out with a short forward draw (as most people do I suppose) but I have now done long draw for the last few projects and am loving it more and more! I will probably still do some projects with a sort forward but I think a long draw would now be my default.
I would use a super thin complimentary yarn as warp and weave a scarf/shawl/whatever it’s enough for with this yarn, it makes for a delightful fabric and makes the yarn shine
I am a worsted spinner at heart. However, one summer for my Master Spinner Program, I bought 4 Suffolk fleeces, washed them, and spent at least an hour every evening making rollags with my hand cards on my front porch watching the sun go down with a glass of ice tea. I made hundreds of them and spun them woolen, working on my long draw and by the end of the summer, I got pretty good. To be honest, I still prefer worsted spinning but push come to shove, I can do woolen spinning.
That floof... it is delectable! I think a woolen spin was a good choice for this one. I knew about pausing the plying bracelet, only because I regularly overload my spindle. :( I've also made a plying bracelet on a makeshift "hand" by putting a wooden popsicle stick in a book so it sticks out (the stick is the finger and the book is the main part of the hand), which was good when I *knew* my spin was so large I wouldn't be able to wind it off in one sitting. I mostly spin short forward on my drop spindles, but long draw on my support spindles.
I can definitely see the difference in how floofy your beautiful yarn is after wet setting and thwacking. So far I've been a worsted spinner, only tried long draw once with some Shetland fiber. You are inspiring me to do more experiments with long draw. And yes, you taught me something new, with the double plying bracelet. That will be so much kinder to my middle finger! I loved this episode, and thank you for showing what didn’t want to turn into yarn. I always have a lot of that, and wonder if it’s just me. harpingJanet
Returning to this video for company whilst I practice long draw and it has been lovely! Oddly found that I find it easier if I have my hands the other way around to what I do for short forward draw. How strange and fun. 😊
Leaving a second comment because you deserve the engagement woo! I did not know about the trick with a plying bracelet that is so useful! thanks for sharing!
Personally I'm a random spinner, but u mostly do the short draw because I enjoy weaving as well so I use the yarn produced in this way to make garments. And once washed they do floof up and its still very drappy but less pilling.😊
Your yarn looks amazing! I am a long draw girl and funny enough just last week started practicing short forward a bit for a different braid I bought from Regenbogenwolle Lol. I also got the copper coin one too and now that I know this one works well for long draw I will definitely do that as well :)
Love it, thanks for spinning with us! I definitely see the difference before vs after thwacking, and its fabulous. It really helped the tweedy bits integrate I think. I just spun my first woolen yarn on a supported spindle and I’m loving the way it changes too. The floof! 🥰
Woollen drafting looks like magic to me. 😮 This is encouraging to give it another go. For skeins about that size, I'm voting for a cowl or colouework in the yoke of a jumper. 😊 I didnt know you could start another plying bracelet - this is brand new information! 😮❤
Hi Jente, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️❣️Long Draw is my default way to spin, I find it quite hard to do a Short Forward Draw Not all my yarn is perfect, and I don't mind that. Sometimes it breaks as it comes off the Bobbin and I just carry on as though nothing happened. Happy Spinning Fibre Friend 🎡🐑🥰🥰 Take care and stay safe Lots of love and Big Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🫂🐕 PS that's what I like about the Long Draw method if Spinning. I am participating in Andrea Mowry's #100daysoflongdrawspinning and also practicing as I was mostly a short forward draw girl. I wasn't sure if I was actually doing the long draw correctly, so thank you for this video that confirmed, indeed I'm doing it right. Yay!! Your yarn turned out so beautiful!!!
I am a short forward girl too. 🙌🏻 And I usually default to a DK yarn. I love watching you spin on your Ashford wheel because I have one similar. I think you have a jumbo flyer on yours, is that right? My bobbin and Flyer seem a lot smaller. I love your videos. They always leave me smiling.
You were NOT the only one who didn't know about 'pausing' your plying bracelet. Mind blown! lol I will definitely have to try that and my fingers will thank me for not cutting off circulation.
Ohh how cool is that! It came out beautiful! I haven't bought from Regenbogenwolle before, but have meant to do so, and this is one more reason to. I spin suspended (haven't gotten the hang of supported yet) and I'm also drafting worsted all the time, currently practicing double drafting. I love that you have been spinning this as a fractal, this is something that I definitely want to try soon! As for a potential project, I'm all for shawls, but I don't have the experience for this yet.
I have yet to get my head around different drafting methods, but I am short and forward in other areas of my life 😂 And I have a lot of South Down fiber :D
So when I first learned to spin, I could not get the hang of short forward draw. Only when I tried spinning from the fold did I get it, and I fell hard for the craft. Now I can easily do SFD and I do really like it, but there's something so satisfying about long draw that makes a special kind of serotonin in my brain hahaha. That said I have never tried it on combed top like that, only ever from the fold, or with rolags that I make on my handcards. From the fold is an interesting semi technique, I noticed that when I do that it is still smoother/more consistent than with a rolag. If you're interested in more yummy colours and cool fiber preps, Frau Wöllfchen has a great selection for very good prices! Tho maybe I wish I knew what to do with all my single skeins... Maybe it's time for another blanket project
Ooooooh I still love this yarn T.T I'm definitely a woollen person myself, and english long draw specifically, although I do go worsted sometimes. Speaking of which, are you ever planning on trying english long draw? :D
Thanks for the plying bracelet tip. If you haven’t seen them yet you might enjoy the videos on long draw spinning by Amanda Hannaford (her RUclips channel is ADHUK) and Pam Austin (her RUclips channel is Spinning School) both videos are quite short. Of course, loads of other RUclipsrs have put out content on this subject and the whole thing can get very contentious on the backward draw versus long draw technique, what it all means and which is correct!
I just love your videos, they have me smiling the whole way through. You bring me such joy! My favorite one skein project is a neck warmer knitted in the round.
For a second I thought you were about to eat the VM xD probably because that braid's colors reminds me so much of salted caramel candies xD the yarn turned out so pretty! :D
Just came across your video and I have to say, I love your presentation style. One way to make it even easier would be to card it into rolags and then it would be a true woolen. But your video style is infectious
No you were not the only one that didn’t know about a second yarn bracelet you looked to be doing so much better on your second bobbin. From someone who has never mastered long draw. I think I need to spend more time on my spindles as you said ,again I have never got the hang of a supported spindle then someone told me my supported spindle was not centred and that is why.I do not need to buy another spindle no way ??!! Do I?
It could be. I have an old supported spindle that didn't quite behave, until I learned the whorl had slipped down and needed to be at least a cm higher
I love woolen spinning. I usually do a modified version of a long draw. My yards are less dense than when I spin worsted and I get better yardage. Your yarn is beautiful.
I prefer short forward and worsted because i love consistency. However, I took my combing "waste" from 2 different breed and carded them together and gave long draw a go. To my surprise I was able to get a consistently thin single esp when I used a smaller diameter whorl. I found I needed more twist in long draw than in short forward. It also spun up a lot faster. You taught me about the plying bracelet trick which I didn't know. Thanks so much
If you mean longdraw: why of course it's basic spinning If you mean spinning: now a whole new world opens up, wherein lies an active and vibrant fiber arts community, with hundreds of content creators like myself, big corporations and small businesses, all centered around oldest of crafts known to mankind. Oh wow that is gorgeous yarn you made. I wish I could squish it. I usually spin short backwards draft, so technically worsted, but I often let the twist slip into my fibre supply so I think I float somewhere in the middle. I haven't yet managed to spin a true woolen yarn successfully, I get way too frustrated with the unevenness...
I started spinning a year and a half ago(and started my channel just over a year ago) and still need to work on my long draw. OK I am always breaking my finger when I do a plying bracelet but I have never seen it done the way you do it. I would love to know how. Your finished yarn is amazing, would look great with the cabled scarf pattern I am about to start for my son.
How? Well... you just make your bracelet, and when you decide 'this is quite enough', you slide it down as if you would start plying, and then just start a new bracelet... keep adding those bracelets until your single is done and then start plying
I had no idea there were ways other than wetting the yarn and whacking it! Do you have any videos on you channel i could watch to learn more? Or any videos you recommend in general?
I've tried long draw quite a few times. I never last an entire spin. I'm not sure how that affects the spin but I'm so ignorant still that I don't notice the difference. And, a plying bracelet is our best friend. lol
You have a peice of roving, and you are able to pull out a tiny strand that you spin and it comes out nice and easy from your wool supply which is roving. Roving is carded into a long strip with the fibers going in the same direction. When I try it with roving, the small piece I spin pulls at the other fibers when it goes past them and causes the rest of roving to bunch up. I have to split the roving into the size that I want to spin, where you seem to be able to hold on to the whole strip and tease out just the amount you need. I can't figure out how you are able to do that . I feel like I understand how you can do that with a batt, but I can't figure it out with the roving.i hope that makes sense.
Get some more of those braids, continue practising your woollen spinning until you have enough for a wonderful, fluffy jumper. I'd go for a textured pattern, like some cables. The details of the texture wouldn't be visible except up close but the overall texturing with the way the colours are distributed within the yarn would be gorgeous. Plan B: I'd try making that lovely yarn into a nice, cosy hat. Again, for the textural depth, a crocheted hat might be a good idea. EDIT: To date, I've always been a short draw, worsted spinner. 2nd EDIT: I didn't know about the plying bracelet trick, either - I don't think it's well known. But I struggle even with the basic plying bracelet. I end up plying really slowly (as opposed to my two bobbins on the lazy Kate speed, where the wheel is in danger of going into orbit) and breaking the yarn frequently.
I didn't know about pausing the plying bracelet either. Thank you so much for sharing! ❤
