Informative and interesting video. Thank you. It gives me a great appreciation for the work involved in making the thread used to make Jeans, shirts, and most every fibrous thing woven from thread or yarn. Imagine the short strands that easily pull apart become a strong and tough thread i use to patch my clothes and the yarn i use to put peoples names on gloves, socks and mittens i gift to people. Your jeans dont fluff apart into a pile of fibers when you sneeze.
I just started trying to drop spindle this week, and I have had so many disasters! I realize after watching you that I haven't spent enough time on the drafting. Also, I keep ending up with really tight spin near the hook, and then it isn't carrying up. Any thoughts? Your voice is so soothing, and I want to live in your studio! Fun. Keep up the great work!
I am so sorry for the delay in answering! I'd definitely say keep working on the drafting, and using your fingers to allow the twist to start up into the fiber. It takes some practice before it comes easier. Thank you so much for your kind words, and good luck!
WOW - what a lovely tutorial Serena, & a confession that I’ve watched all your videos + am looking forward to your other one’s in spinning the wool. It’s had me interested over the years, your delivery in your video’s is very calming also. Wishing you all the best in your family business 👍😁👏
Hi, so I received my kit yesterday, thank you! I didn't pre-draft enough at first (too excited lol) but now I'm getting the hang of it! So thrilled!💜 I hope the best for you in your ventures.
I have been spinning on wheels for a few years, just purchased my first drop spindle last week. I didn't think it would be so fun! Thank you so much for your video!!! Looking forward to watching others! Oh, and you have a lovely shop!!!
Thank you so much for this informative tutorial. I am a knitter who has begun to research spinning my own yarn. I've been watching lots of tutorials and videos and yours is the best I've found. You explain things simply and with a beautiful calm timbre :) Looking forward to beginning my first spin sesh. Also, I'd love to see a tutorial on what to do next, taking off the singles from the drop spindle and plying together with multiple strands on a hand spindle. Do you have any tutorial on this technique? I didn't see them on your youtube.
Thank you so much for your kind words!! I’m working on a follow up video that shows how to do those things (life got super busy and delayed me 😅). Hopefully I’ll have it up soon! Im so glad this one helped you! ☺️
Hi! Thank you for this tutorial It was really easy to follow and to understand. When I watched other videos I didn't think I could do this. But now I can! I ordered one of your kits. Can't wait to get started. Thank you!
You’re welcome! Try “parking” your spindle between your knees (easier while sitting) right after you spin it, so the spindle can’t reverse the other way while you draft out. You will get into a the flow of it with more practice and will be able to anticipate when the spindle will stop spinning or change direction. ☺️
Your video covered all the problems I am having as a beginning spinner with a drop spindle. Thank you!
