    i was in a school production of peter pan and the actor had to fly through a window that had a latch on it but somehow the latch locked again and when peter tried to fly through the window he just slammed into it and this 7ft wooden window thing and smashed down onto the floor. it was terrifying for us at the moment but now that i look back at it, it’s *HILARIOUS*

    Okay, but during one show we did, someone's mic died on stage. They were fine, they performed through it. During a longer blackout, one of the crew members ran on stage and changed the battery. But the blackout ended before he could get offstage. This show's set was a courtroom made out of book cases. He had to hide onstage for the entire scene just crouching behind a book case.

    One of my music professors said that he had a rule for onstage mishaps. “If nobody dies or is irreparably injured, it’s hysterical. Otherwise, it’s traumatic and why we have a psychological services offered on campus. We did Camelot. During ‘The Lusty Months Of May,” I was dancing (badly) with what was supposed to be a cameo dance with Lancelot and he danced himself into the orchestra pit and broke his leg. Curtain came down, an ambulance was called and we had a different Lancelot. Yup. THAT was traumatic.

      Okay, I really don't want to take away from the fact that that does sound really scary & stressful for all involved. I hope he recovered well, & I hope that blocking was adjusted after that to pad the minimum intended distance from the stage edge a bit, yikes :(
      ... but also THE "BREAK A LEG" JOKES OH MY DOG I'm sorry I'm sorry I couldn't not say something I just {wheezes} I can't ... _maybe the real trauma is the terrible "break a leg" jokes we make along the way_

    In our production of Mary Poppins with my local theatre company, the fire alarm decided in the middle of “Step in Time” while Bert was in the air would be the perfect time for a reset! Massive alarms started going off and the fire curtain came down on the stage with Bert stuck hanging in the air above the stage. We had to evacuate the whole theatre (300+ people). I was backstage crew for that show. It was quite the experience! 😂🙈
    The cast were champs though and once we got the all clear to come back in, they started right at the spot they left off as if nothing had happened.

    • @rachelcookie321
      @rachelcookie321 2 года назад +5

      When I was in primary school the fire alarm went off during the senior school production. Someone had left a hair straightener on in one of the classrooms they were getting ready in and it started smoking. Everyone has to evacuate and it stopped everything for like 30 minutes while the firefighters checked everywhere. Luckily that year they had decided that each class would do their own small show of a fairy tail so I think whatever class was on stage just restarted and then they carried on.

    During a high school production of pride and prejudice, i worked the show and SO MANY THINGS went minutely wrong. Bingley's ball flew off the stage, one of the couches had to be replaced mid performance because one of the legs were splitting, Mrs. Bennett's bell broke and she kept ringing it, without the outer shell, a mic was turned on by accident and the actress swore and it was heard throughout the whole auditorium, the downstage wings flew up instead of the scrim cuz flies unlocked the wrong one, when carrying it off stage, a stage hand hit a lattice against a wall, and our jello punch was moldy. :)

I had a quick costume change in literally 2 minutes and when I was doing it, my mic wire got stuck in my bra and wrapped around my neck. I had no time to fix it, so ran on stage. I when I did that, the mic pack became loose from the belt, and I was trying to do my two times tables whilst it was slowly slipping, the wire was chocking me and the mic wouldn’t attach to my collar so I was holding it in front of my face.

    In that same show, the cart they needed to set up the dinner scene didn’t get pushed out far enough (the actor that had to set the table was chained to said table) and some of the sound cues wouldn’t go.
    they handled everything really well though, and it worked because the show is meant to be a really chaotic comedy

    During my beauty and the beast jr practice we were going through the whole show. I had a small part during belle and then had to wait for another small part in the mob song and the scene after it. While we were practicing the mob song I had a mic on. I was singing my part and throughout the entire song I heard an echo. I thought it was Gaston’s mic or the other person who had a small part. The next scene came and throughout the fight scene I heard grunting and fighting (Which I didn’t think much of ofc because that’s the whole scene.) I walk off stage and I pat my friend on the back and say “Good job! We finally did it!” In a whisper. I heard myself echo. Oh no. I try to hold on my laugh but it sneaks out and instead of a HA! It’s was a EEK! And we had gotten to the part where the beast was “Dying” so it was basically like “No! Don’t die! I love you!” “EEK EEK EEK.” I try so hard not to laugh again and I run down to get my mic off. Long story short, during the actual show they either didn’t turn my mic on or they just forgot to. So yup. Thanks for your time lmao

    I have one of my own!!! My school was doing a show that involved platforms onstage, and I was on one of them for my scene. When I had to step off of the platform to exit, I tripped over my skirt and fell! I was a freshman at the time and this was the first time this had happened to me, so I just laid there for a few seconds laughing. Then I got back into character and walked offstage. It was amazing.

    So we were doing a Mary Poppin’s show once and I was on the costume team. Which meant I made the costumes and managed them backstage. Though during a performance, the actor for one of the kids ran up to me and whispered that he lost one of the trousers in a scene. We panicked and searched for them everywhere. We even searched for them after that performance night and months/years after. We never found them. Sometimes I wonder where those trousers went

    Kevin Kline and Roxanne Hart starred in a play at the Circle in the Square many years ago called Loose Ends. He gave her a gift for her birthday and it ended up in a screaming match where they were on opposite sides of the stage facing away from each other and yelling at the top of their lungs. The audience laughter grew louder and louder because the huge bow from the gift was planted on Kline's butt, like a Playboy bunny's tail. She finally turned, crossed the stage and yanked it off like it was part of the stage business.

    I love stage mishaps like the door getting stuck because we get to see the actors try to carry on in character. My personal favorite is an Into the Woods play at my highschool where the cow got stuck partway through wheeling it across the stage so the actor tugged once, twice, looked at the cow, shrugged, then picked it up and carried it the rest of the way across.

    I actually have two theater fails to share. Both of them happened on the second performance of a show. The first one happened when my theater did Mary Poppins last year, I was a sweep, and me and my friend could not find some of the letters for supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. They ended up not making it onto the stage that night, but somehow the cast managed to make it work. The second one happened very recently. I was Karnak in my theater’s production of ride the cyclone, and one night for some reason I froze and it took me so long to say “cue the mariachi band” (I eventually said the line) and the guy who played Noel started improving about his dreams in France and it was hilarious.

    Oh gosh I have a story for this. We were rehearsing and people were up on the beasts (which are like the big 12-feet-high set pieces) and they are NOT supposed to move. Anyway we're all dancing and the beast STARTS TO MOVE as people are on it, almost crushing like 20 people. It was so scary because we all heard screams and then looked over to see the beast moving. Also a side note is that a common saying in my theatre group is "if the beast touches you, you die". So yeah. It was fine in the end, no one was hurt and we all like to joke about it now even though it only happened a few weeks ago. But so terrifying in the moment!

      Yo this is fascinating, I enjoy safety/design/emergency prevention topics like this a lot. Can I be a weird nerd at you & ask about what's known about how the structure began to fail? And like have they changed the design for the set pieces' base structure since then?

      @ryleem371 Год назад +1

      @@ItsAsparageese Haha you're always welcome to be a weird nerd, I'm totally one too
      Structurally, it was pretty sound. They were made from a lot of thick wood beams and supported us with all the jumping and dancing around we had to do. But the problem was that although we had brakes on them, they weren't super secure! So we used some wooden structures to hold them in place better until we could purchase better brakes and really lock them in place! Aaaand that was about all we did. But we tested them a few times after and they worked pretty well and were secure. I wasn't on the stage crew last year, though, so I don't know much, hopefully this answered your question though!

      @@ryleem371 Ohhhh! Tbh, due to the set pieces I've seen up close, it totally didn't occur to me that the ones you spoke of may have been on wheels 😆 That totally makes sense lol glad to hear it was a matter of rolling rather than wobbling and wound up being an easy fix! I had an embarrassing moment happen to me in my first high school theatre production. My school did Legally Blonde that spring in which I was in the ensemble, I was getting ready for the show that night and we were doing notes before. I was running behind and getting these tan heels on so in my schools auditorium there are seven ways to get to the stage. There are three sets of steps, the wings, and the doors that lead to the wings on each side. So the stairs in the side of the stage lead our to double doors and a hallway so I was going from the girls dressing room to the auditorium, and the fastest way is through the double doors that lead to the stage left steps and down to the seats in the lower level (I was doing this with my heels unbuckled and I walked through the doors down the stairs and suddenly I missed a step and fell. I was fine I just reopened some old wounds and they bled but after notes, I went to the bathroom and cleaned the reopened wounds.
