This is a REALLY long one, so strap in. If you don't want to read, you don't have to, but this is a rant I've been holding on to for a minute and I gotta let it go. What makes me upset about people criticizing Evan as a character and calling him a sociopath is how some of us (yes, I do it, too) disregard or blatantly ignore some of the events that lead up to Evan starting and following through with the lie. 1. Evan DID try to tell Cynthia and Larry that he wasn't friends with Connor, but as we know, our boy doesn't do well with confrontation and especially not in this situation, so to tell 2 grieving parents that are trying to hold on to the last little thing they can of their son that they in fact don't have anything to hold on to would be hard to do in the moment, especially if you're Evan Hansen. Also, the parents were being pretty stubborn about it and kept ignoring him each time he denied being friends with him, so there's that, as well. 2. After that scene, we get the scene with Jared and, well, lemme just quote the scene: Jared: What are you going to do? Evan: I mean, the truth. (Initially, he was going to tell the truth. Wanna know what Jared's response was?) J: The truth. Really? You're going to go to the Murphy's house and explain that the only thing left they have of their son is some weird sex letter that you wrote to yourself? (Pushing Evan toward the dark side just a little bit, but let's skip ahead about 3 or 4 lines.) E: What do you expect me to do? Just keep lying? J: I didn't say, "lie." All you have to do is just nod and confirm. Whatever they say about Connor, you just nod your head and you say, yeah, that's true. Don't contradict and don't make shit up. It's foolproof. (See? Jared is the one who initially pushes Evan to lie in the first place. But wait, there's more! Skip ahead 1 more line and...) E: They were so sad. His parents? His mom was just... I've never seen anyone so sad before. (Here's the most manipulative ass line Jared says probably throughout this entire script.) J: Well, then, good thing you're about to tell her the truth about your sex letter. I'm sure that will cheer her right up. (Literally the last thing Evan probably needed to hear, all things considered, Jare Bear, especially since you are his only "friend" and he gives into peer pressure REEEEAAAALLLL easily.) 3. Of course, a lot of the stuff that happens is Evan's fault, no doubt, but in the For Forever scene, Cynthia was the only one who was really trying to remember Connor as a good person. Hell, she was the only one really trying to remember Connor at all. Zoe and Larry started the argument, Zoe continued on, and Evan not only didn't like that they were fighting, he didn't like that they were saying that there were no good memories of Connor, so he stands up and tries to defuse the situation any way he can and that was For Forever. Not the best way to defuse the situation, but I can see why he did it. He wanted to give them some little nugget of hope that Connor wasn't as bad as they thought. Am I defending Evan? No, but I am explaining how not everything that happens is necessarily his fault. Also, I feel like the fact that he created something as beautiful as The Connor Project out of this is quite fantastic. He took a bad situation and flipped it into something positive (for a while, anyway). Now, again, not defending him. He should've defied what Jared said and, though it would break the hearts of Connor's parents, told them the truth, but I hope this puts into perspective a couple of the reasons he did what he did. Also, I don't personally think anyone is rooting for him except for at the beginning. I mean, really, he was written to be morally grey.
16:17 the voicemail at the end of the film is actually Steve’s voice bc he wanted to record it himself after Bradley Whitford couldn’t do it :)) plus he re-wrote his part so it’s even more genuine!
I remember watching Cats with my friends, it was the last movie I watched before isolation. the woman to my left got up and left after the first 10 minutes, we all later said "wish we could have done that."
My number one artist on my Spotify Wrapped this year was Andrew Garfield and my top three songs were all from the Tick, Tick… Boom! soundtrack. It just hit home so hard for me, it was a masterpiece.

The problem with the greatest showman for me is the casting with Zendaya and Zac Efron. I like them seperately but they just didn’t fit right for me in the movie.
The problem with the Greatest Showman for me is it’s very concept. From the very start, why are we praising PT Barnum, a man who exploited minorities and people with disabilities? It’s very flawed in concept and execution.
Hi Sam&Ryan, I just wanted to say that you two always brighten my day and I absolutely love your performance in Heathers the musical and in Wicked (Ryan) have an amazing day -from South Africa
i'd love to see a part two! your opinions on ~ les mis, into the woods, la la land, mamma mia 2, the hamilton recording (although, that's a given), a star is born, yesterday ~ would be interesting. also yes, wanted to make sure the comment was lower-case exclusive ;)
Go on Amazon Prime and watch Everybody's Talking about Jamie. It's a movie musical from a show that is still currently playing on the West End in London. I loved it and I'm waiting for the stage show to come to broadway.
I was surprised Hamilton wasn’t on y’all’s list lol since y’all enjoyed the other two of his so much. Though I guess maybe because it’s technically not a movie and just a pro shot which makes sense. =) Also I can’t wait for the Mean Girls movie musical. Oh and if you haven’t yet checked out Freaky Friday the movie musical on Disney+ I highly recommend. I honestly wish Heathers and Carrie would both get a movie musical as well as Next to Normal.
I feel like it's such a LMM thing tho Hmmm out of all the founding fathers I could write about, Imma do ✨Alexander Hamilton✨ yknow the guy who no one knows about except Ron Chernow Hmmm out of all the amazing musicals I could direct, Imma do ✨Tick, Tick...BOOM✨ yknow the one you vaguely remember but no one else would choose
I REALLY enjoyed The Greatest Showman but this critique is spot-on. I think 90% of my love for it is that I somehow missed EVERY advertisement for it beforehand and didn't know it would be a musical until it started playing.
Bradley Whitford (the man who played Sondheim) will forever be Carmen Lowell’s dad (from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) to me 😅 that’s the only thing I’ve seen him in, other than a few episodes of different shows as a guest. Hopefully I can start seeing him as Sondheim now, since he’s a much nicer guy ❤️
I love anything that involves Lin Manuel Miranda! Hamilton, Tick, Tick, BOOM!, In The Heights, Encanto, Moana, Vivo, Mary Poppins Returns, 21 Chump Street...
Bradley Whitford, a fantastic character actor probably most know for playing Rose’s dad in Get Out and The West Wing, played Steven Sondheim. He’s a terrific actor. :)
It's interesting to see nonLatinos actually enjoying In The Heights because every non-white Latino really did not have that take. Just solidified that it was something made about us but nor for us lol.
Even though it will end up likely about where Prom is for you def need to check out Everybody's Talking About Jamie on Prime. Speaking of Prom I feel like my biggest issue is the trimmed down songs which made those scenes fall flat. Also Corden but the rest of the cast was so solid I'll kinda forgive it. Dear Evan Hansen I may have put in the soundtack spot because it still has some bops even if problematic af.
My issue with the Dear Evan Hansen movie was that they removed any song that might've implied what Evan was doing was messed up. I get removing the Connor ghost cause they wanted to ground it in reality (Why? It just makes it more uncomfortable) but then they also remove good for you, the only moment where he gets confronted... why?
very fun video! I am going to watch in the heights finally over my spring break and west side story HA the week after spring break we are reading Romeo and Juliet for my Shakespeare class
I honestly don't think that the DEH movie is that bad, but there are obviously a few things I would change, like casting a younger actor as Evan (Love Ben Platt but the whole nepotism of the situation is 😬) and keep the wholesome persona for Zoe; there was no reason to make her so edgy. I genuinely think it is well written and I like that Evan actually experiences some form of consequences for what he did as opposed to ending the whole show after exposing all of the lies.
in dear evan hansen the book and musical they vilanise evan they tell him he is shitty when in the movie that is never adressed.... we sympathise with him because he admits his wrongs and we adress him and hes a teenager we can accept it but we cannot accept thses actions from an adult
Lin-Manuel Miranda was the lead in a Lincoln Center Encores! production of Tick, Tick...Boom! in 2014 with Karen Olivo and Leslie Odom Jr.. IIRC, it was where he really got to know Leslie and lead to his being cast in Hamilton. It was that experience that more than likely led to him deciding to shepherd it to film, as it's a rather auto biographical re-telling of Jonathan Larsen's life, the man whose Rent is what made LMM feel like he could not just love the theater but be a part of it himself, thus changing the course of his life entirely.
I've really only seen good to great movie musicals from this past decade. I loved Dear Evan Hansen despite its flaws. Les Mis had plenty of great moments, with some slipups named Russell Crowe. In the Heights, Tick Tick Boom, and West Side Story were all awesome. I really enjoy Greatest Showman. I don't like Into the Woods, because it feels lacking in fun. My least favorite musical movie(I haven't seen Cats and I don't intend to) is Phantom of the Opera, which I know didn't come out in the past decade. I can't fathom the decisions that were made. Also, that was a scary good Jerry Seinfeld impression.
Dude my Dad and I went to see DEH in theaters and I was the only one familiar with the musical so he went in blind and within fifteen minutes all hope had left his eyes Like he leaned over after a bit and asked if the movie ended happy and I guess my face was answer enough
7:34 same ryan! andrew rannells does not get talked about enough for how universal an actor he is! i’d love to see your opinion on falsettos (the original or 2016 revival!)
Here's my hot take: I feel like people who say Cats the movie is weird and uncomfortable and creepy need to revisit the original musical and realise that it was *always* weird and uncomfortable and creepy. That's what makes it great and what makes ALW such a genius.
Before watching this video I want to say that Cats musical is still the worst. I'm just going end it there who would paid for that. Can we have another tier that said dumpster fire or Why I'm here.
The Prom may not be good, and the James Corden of it all doesn't help, but it's still a massively comforting movie for me. The music is really good all the way through, and Meryl Streep and Ariana DeBose especially really put their all into it.
See, I think The Prom was amazing. I hadnt seen the stage show or heard the soundtrack before. Huge watcher and devourer of stage and film musicals. It was better than In The Heights 🤷♂️
Rooting for evan hansen is exactly why i didn’t want to see the movie, because i don’t root for him in the musical and i knew they would make him the hero in the movie
Sam! Ryan! This was great. You gotta go check out our guy Bradley Whitford's work! He was Sondheim in TTB. Go watch "The West Wing"!! I feel like maybe y'all would be into it.
I do have to say, as much as he’s right that the movie wouldn’t exist without him, that’s an ugly thing to say to the world and came off more as if he was saying the audience are just a bunch of ungrateful brats and should all be grateful he wanted to do a movie
I haven't really found anyone really be able to explain why the DEH movie is bad because I think it fixes some things from the show, but also does some things worse than the show. Everyone talks about this and that but I agree it's not good but I can't really explain "why" outside of contrivance and some bad camera work
i know that ben platt is too old but like if i knew nothing about him or his age, he would've fooled me LMFAO BAHA i think it was the hair oh gosh the hair
I'd love to talk about popcorn: in Germany popcorn in movie theaters is usually sweet. With butter/caramel. I assumed that it is like that in every country in every part of the world. And everytime I watched an american movie or a TV show that is set in USA and they went to the movies and bought giant bags of popcorn, I always assumed they'd eat sweet Popcorn! years later I realized the Popcorn is salty in America. Mindblown!! now I'm grossed out a little bit how people can eat giant amounts of salty Popcorn...so salty...you have to drink so much water...;)
So Sondheim was a part of the movie Tick Tick Boom before he died! The voicemail left for Jonathan is actually him! But the physical Sondheim is played by Bradley Whitford
The crazy thing about the Dear Evan Hansen comments on Ben Platt "being too old" to play Evan Hansen is that literally the people who played Zoe (Kaitlyn Dever), Jared (Nik Dodani), Alana (Amandla Stenberg), and Connor (Colton Ryan) were all adults in their twenties at the time of filming too. The youngest was Amandla (now 24). Ben just hasn't aged as well as the rest of them (he's only like 3 months older than Nik Dodani). 😬
west side story is kinda connected to LMM in a way... WSS is a Sondheim musical Sondheim was Jonathan Larson's mentor Jonathan Larson made tick tick boom Lin-Manuel Maranda directed TTB...
If you want to see West Side Story, again, it’s on iTunes! I bought it earlier today, so I can watch it again! If this movie doesn’t get multiple Oscars, it will be a shame!
I was sure you will discuss the voice of Andrew Garfield in the movie. What do you think of people non singers (as he was) before the movie step into this big movies
I don’t know what’s wrong with me because I LOVE musicals but I thought In the Heights was so boring I didn’t finish it. Then my friends started it so I watched it again and finished it and still thought it was boring. 😅
I think West Side Story flopped at the box office because they didn’t subtitle the spanish bits and people were complaining about it even though you can guess what the Spanish means from their facial expressions or they’ll say it again in english later on. Also spiderman came out around the same time and more people would rather see that than West Side Story. Encanto which is pretty popular also flopped slightly at the box office so I don’t think it has to do with how good the movie is

Evan: I mean, the truth. (Initially, he was going to tell the truth. Wanna know what Jared's response was?)
J: The truth. Really? You're going to go to the Murphy's house and explain that the only thing left they have of their son is some weird sex letter that you wrote to yourself? (Pushing Evan toward the dark side just a little bit, but let's skip ahead about 3 or 4 lines.)
E: What do you expect me to do? Just keep lying?
J: I didn't say, "lie." All you have to do is just nod and confirm. Whatever they say about Connor, you just nod your head and you say, yeah, that's true. Don't contradict and don't make shit up. It's foolproof. (See? Jared is the one who initially pushes Evan to lie in the first place. But wait, there's more! Skip ahead 1 more line and...)
E: They were so sad. His parents? His mom was just... I've never seen anyone so sad before. (Here's the most manipulative ass line Jared says probably throughout this entire script.)
J: Well, then, good thing you're about to tell her the truth about your sex letter. I'm sure that will cheer her right up. (Literally the last thing Evan probably needed to hear, all things considered, Jare Bear, especially since you are his only "friend" and he gives into peer pressure REEEEAAAALLLL easily.)
I was about to comment this 😂
my comfort musical is sweeney todd… idk what that says about me but it sure says something💀
i- um- uh-
i’m concerned-
Who wants a recorded Broadway Mean Girls but not as a musical movie? Just a movie where they record the stage of Mean Girls 💅💅
Like they did for Hamilton?
Yea
aaaaand now they're doing a mean girls movie musical 😂😂
I remember watching Cats with my friends, it was the last movie I watched before isolation. the woman to my left got up and left after the first 10 minutes, we all later said "wish we could have done that."
My number one artist on my Spotify Wrapped this year was Andrew Garfield and my top three songs were all from the Tick, Tick… Boom! soundtrack. It just hit home so hard for me, it was a masterpiece.
Dude I’m so sad right now I just failed my drivers test and I’ve been busy but I was catching up on some of your vids yesterday and I’m so glad you posted again because your energy lifts my spirits :)
My dad is old and he loves WSS…he’s also Puerto Rican and is HUGE on classical music and classic theatre…and he LOVED this WSS and actually said he liked it better because of how they told the story and placed the songs. It was perfection
Hi Sam&Ryan, I just wanted to say that you two always brighten my day and I absolutely love your performance in Heathers the musical and in Wicked (Ryan) have an amazing day
-from South Africa
Finally saw West Side Story yesterday and I had goosebumps throughout the ENTIRE THING. It was INCREDIBLE
considering i’ve watched “tick, tick…Boom!” 21 times, you can assume which one is my favorite lol
i'd love to see a part two! your opinions on ~ les mis, into the woods, la la land, mamma mia 2, the hamilton recording (although, that's a given), a star is born, yesterday ~ would be interesting. also yes, wanted to make sure the comment was lower-case exclusive ;)
They should have had Andrew Barth Feldman for Dear Evan Hansen. He is a perfect fit on Broadway and would be the perfect fit on screen.
YES!
I love that u guys defended Ben a bit and the ranked the DEH movie on the bottom
Them talking about James cordon miraculously appearing in every movie musical is me every time someone brings him or any musical movie up
Go on Amazon Prime and watch Everybody's Talking about Jamie. It's a movie musical from a show that is still currently playing on the West End in London. I loved it and I'm waiting for the stage show to come to broadway.
12:10 Fun fact: I live in Latin América and when I went to watch West Side Story it was replaced for an extra screen for Spiderman No Way Home 3d
Hamilton is a Movie Karen
How am I a Karen? And I said I’m surprised it’s not on their list since it’s a movie musical as well.
it's not technically a movie musical. movie musical refers to a musical that was adapted to be in movie format, not a video of the stage performance
I feel like it's such a LMM thing tho
Hmmm out of all the founding fathers I could write about, Imma do ✨Alexander Hamilton✨ yknow the guy who no one knows about except Ron Chernow
Hmmm out of all the amazing musicals I could direct, Imma do ✨Tick, Tick...BOOM✨ yknow the one you vaguely remember but no one else would choose
Tip for musical movies : cast Broadway actors not some Random stars
I REALLY enjoyed The Greatest Showman but this critique is spot-on. I think 90% of my love for it is that I somehow missed EVERY advertisement for it beforehand and didn't know it would be a musical until it started playing.
WEST SIDE STORY WAS SO GOOD OMG
now can we get a tier list for movie musical directors?
I challenge you to rank all of LMM's works: In the Heights, Hamilton, Moana, Encanto, Tick Tick Boom, etc
My issue with the DEH movie is they took out anything that held Evan Hansen responsible so he’s just an unchecked sociopath
Can you make a sequel (or prequel?) of this but with older movies? Like Chicago, Moulin Rogue, Romeo and Juliet, etc.
West Side Story and Tick Tick Boom are probably the most amazing films I’ve ever watched.
I feel like I’m the only one who genuinely enjoyed the dear Evan hansen movie, and I honestly can’t pinpoint why it resonated with me.
If you guys have heard of the Jeremy Jordan Greatest Showman fiasco, I would love your opinions on it!
Waitwait what
My issue with the Dear Evan Hansen movie was that they removed any song that might've implied what Evan was doing was messed up.
Okay but the best musical to come out within the last decade is Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar
in dear evan hansen the book and musical they vilanise evan they tell him he is shitty when in the movie that is never adressed.... we sympathise with him because he admits his wrongs and we adress him and hes a teenager we can accept it but we cannot accept thses actions from an adult
not sure if you’ve already done this, but you should make a tier list of all of the disney channel shows and/or original movies!
"Whoever played Stephen Sondheim" 😆 How can someone not know the great Bradley Whitford?! 😆
Dude my Dad and I went to see DEH in theaters and I was the only one familiar with the musical so he went in blind and within fifteen minutes all hope had left his eyes
Like he leaned over after a bit and asked if the movie ended happy and I guess my face was answer enough
7:34 same ryan! andrew rannells does not get talked about enough for how universal an actor he is! i’d love to see your opinion on falsettos (the original or 2016 revival!)
Into the woods is my worst because it took a story I loved and ruined it. Sideways has a great video on that
Maybe make a Tier list ranking the things our king LMM has made?
Here's my hot take: I feel like people who say Cats the movie is weird and uncomfortable and creepy need to revisit the original musical and realise that it was *always* weird and uncomfortable and creepy. That's what makes it great and what makes ALW such a genius.
It’s the cgi attempt- not as good looking as the stage makeup
Before watching this video I want to say that Cats musical is still the worst. I'm just going end it there who would paid for that. Can we have another tier that said dumpster fire or Why I'm here.
The Prom may not be good, and the James Corden of it all doesn't help, but it's still a massively comforting movie for me. The music is really good all the way through, and Meryl Streep and Ariana DeBose especially really put their all into it.
0:02 into the video and I already know it's gonna be Cats.
does the disney+ hamilton count?? it’s definitely top tier
Not about the tier list, but the way he looks at her at 0:20 is just so genuine and sweet and I love it 😊
i just can’t wait for wicked to come out, i’ve seen the cast and i’m just hoping it’s really good.
How you make a good movie musical: get a group a theatre kids in a room and let them make it
See, I think The Prom was amazing. I hadnt seen the stage show or heard the soundtrack before. Huge watcher and devourer of stage and film musicals. It was better than In The Heights 🤷♂️
I saw this channel last month and subscribed But I just realized that that's Sam!?! Sam from Hi5. How did I not notice that!?!
Rooting for evan hansen is exactly why i didn’t want to see the movie, because i don’t root for him in the musical and i knew they would make him the hero in the movie
I just need to know one thing- where did you get ur shirt?!?! Is that Adam driver?
I think my favorite song from TTB is therapy😂I have like memorized the Andrew/Jonathan part but I need someone for the duet
Sam!
Saw West Side Story on my Birthday (opening weekend). BEST BDAY! Sooo good how did it not do well in the box office?!
Dude Ryan was amazing as Tony in west side story. I got to see min at the lyric opera house in Chicago. CHILLS.
WSS is a Sondheim musical
Sondheim was Jonathan Larson's mentor
Jonathan Larson made tick tick boom
Lin-Manuel Maranda directed TTB...
ANYBODY VOTE FOR A PART 2?!? With newsies and Hamilton and so on?! love Ryan and sam!
✨meryl streep✨
✨andrew ranolds✨(love me some andy rand🤭)
✨nicole kidman✨
*ahem* 😅james corden 😬
Can you guys do a dream cast for a movie musical adaptation of Heathers (if it were ever to happened)
I don’t know what’s wrong with me because I LOVE musicals but I thought In the Heights was so boring I didn’t finish it. Then my friends started it so I watched it again and finished it and still thought it was boring. 😅
the same happened to me with west side story, i found it so boring. tbf i've never liked romeo and juliet but idk lol
I think West Side Story flopped at the box office because they didn’t subtitle the spanish bits and people were complaining about it even though you can guess what the Spanish means from their facial expressions or they’ll say it again in english later on. Also spiderman came out around the same time and more people would rather see that than West Side Story. Encanto which is pretty popular also flopped slightly at the box office so I don’t think it has to do with how good the movie is
I really liked Dear Evan Hansen and I’ve seen the stage show too. I thought it was great. Deserved Would See Again. ;-)
