Bat Flip: Hurts the pitcher's delicate feelings for a few minutes.
Throwing at a Hitter: Could cause injury, potentially even career-threatening.

Pitching example, There is a difference between a fist pump and Throwing your Glove. If I was to strike out someone and then throw my glove 30 feet in the air, Everyone would agree that is ridiculous unless you just finished a no hitter or won the world series. @@rymaal And this is my exact point. You think preserving the precious, delicate emotions of the pitcher is more important than the hitter exhibiting any sort of emotion after having success in an athletic COMPETITION. This "Old Ball Game" mentality needs to die. Celebrating an achievement is the DEFINITION of "respecting the sport", because they know how difficult their path to that moment was. If the pitcher wants to jump up and down or throw his glove after a strikeout...Cool. Let him do that. He won the battle and deserves to do that. The same opportunity should be awarded to the batter without childish repercussion.

Tyler Reddick there’s a time and place for it. If it’s your first homer in the big leagues celebrate. If you just broke a record, celebrate. If you walk off in a playoff game or World Series, absolutely celebrate. But if it’s just another homer, then there’s no point. 2nd inning?? There’s no momentum built. They lost that game anyways. Also, pitchers don’t celebrate after a pointless strikeout. If you strikeout the side, celebrate, if you’re in a jam, bases loaded & need a big strikeout, sure fistpump. And again if it’s a big game and the strikeout is game changing, then I’m all for it. The consequence is something that’s been in baseball for years though. Don’t wanna get beaned for hitting that pointless homer? Then don’t batflip over the pointless homer.

UltimatexInstinct Celebrations in soccer, football, hockey, they all come no matter if it’s just another point or if it’s special. I get the respect argument, baseball is a gentleman’s sport, but disrespect is doing it to rile up the other team. He’s not doing that. He’s looking at his own dugout, throwing the bat towards his own dugout, soaking in the moment. The guy just hit a ball 400 feet in an MLB game. Very few can say that. If you can hit a home run against a Major League Pitcher, it’s worth celebrating. Tyler Reddick i see what you mean, and that’s understandable. I think it’s because of how baseball is played 162 times a year, 9 innings a game, roughly 3-4 at bats. There’s plenty of opportunities to do it. Which Tim has done it 4 times this year & 50 times in his career. I get the white Sox do only get about 3 homers a year, but that’s also why it’s not necessary to get pumped if you’re the White Sox lol.. you don’t see Mike trout or Christian yelich bat flipping when they hit a bomb. I think it’s a specific moment type of deal with the batflip. For Tim Anderson’s case, there’s other ways to celebrate his homer, that can fire up the team, like not doing a commonly known disrespectful gesture. Unless this is a hot rival game or something, and there’s underlying beef. Ya know? I do get that there should be an entertainment aspect too. It’s just a matter of doing what it’s always been like, or adjusting for entertainment

UltimatexInstinct Yeah I see what you’re saying. A second inning bat flip with two terrible teams? Maybe not the time. But as a Blue Jays fan with Bautista’s bat flip I’m used to defending the flips. His flip assured hundreds of thousands of die-hard fans that they would live to see another day. No Texas Ranger could ever stop that. That’s why I’m pro-flip. And for Tim Anderson, a humble guy, easy to defend, I want to side with him. But second inning bat flips in April? They got cheerleaders, live music, non-stop through the game, batflips, and the list goes on. It draws the fans to the games, and the non-fan who is intrigued to watch something different.
The MLB, needs international executives to teach them something that they already know, let the players play with swag and passion. Let the players wear the flashy cleats, colorful gloves, custom painted bats, etc... If the sport never evolves, its doomed to loose captivity from the people who dont play the sport; the fans! BASEBALL its a juggernaut on all of those countries, and everyone wants to play it.
Lets not talk about the salaries which are ridiculously high, in a sports that has not been watch consistently on tv during the last decade. The fans only wants to watch the highlights online... You can spend 3 hrs watching a game that only has 8 to 12 minutes of true action, that you cant celebrate. Extend the highlights with fist pump from the difficult double play, from the super hard squeeze bunt performed, the tripple, the on the field homerun, and you will have a show...
Thats why NFL, NBA and Soccer have better ratings on TV, and more fand in their stadiums than the MLB.

I can understand a player exploding with emotion for overcoming a tough obstacle. Whether a pitcher is striking out a batter and cheering (the pitcher's batflip) or a batter is hitting a home run in a clutch situation. If anything, that is a compliment to the talent level of the person they just succeeded against. On a side note, totally agree with Al on everything said about pitcher's having a responsibility when they are pitching. I always liked him. Top class.

  • @MarkKreutzerPrimary
    @MarkKreutzerPrimary 5 лет назад +7

I love this idea that “pitchers will get emotional, and unless we want to eliminate emotion from the game we should be comfortable letting pitchers hit batters after they celebrate home runs”, it’s absolutely absurd to an almost comedic degree. There is an inherent difference between getting emotional and celebrating a strikeout, and getting emotional and trying to hurt a person with a high-speed projectile. Not to mention the fact that thinking it’s poor form to hit guys who showboat isn’t at all eliminating emotion from the game, because, why are the hitters showboating? Because they did something incredibly difficult and impressive and they get emotional and they want to celebrate it. Basically, what I’m saying is, if you’re mad at a guy for flipping a bat or watching a longball leave the yard, strike him out the next time you face him and relish it. Batters aren’t allowed to deliberately hit pitchers, are they?

Two completely different sports. Different sets of rules. Baseball is 150 years old. What these ballplayers are describing is how the game is supposed to be played. The way it's going now, they are going to turn it into a spectacle. Did you catch the comment that football can to some extent allow spectacle because it's a very short season and is already a contact sport? Baseball is not a contact sport. It is played without brute force. Those who don't abide by that are considered "dirty." Hitting a batter (not in the head of course) is an unwritten rule because it is a way of policing the game on the field. If you leave it alone and allow players and managers to enforce traditions within reasonable bounds, then you don't need to call down more bureaucracy from the top - which is already ruining the game with ridiculous rule changes in recent years.
Baseball does not need to be micromanaged by league bureaucrats, part-time fans, or the media. That's why the former players in this video referenced the 750 players in the league. They decide how to handle stuff like this on the field. Self-policing works - which is why it is a tradition. It settles the issue one way or another and then everyone moves on and plays baseball again. We don't need people crying to the media or appealing to fringe fans who don't have a deep knowledge of the game. We don't need even more rules coming down from MLB.

MillionthUsername I can understand what you are saying slightly, but it doesn’t make an excuse for hitting these guys intentionally. You can’t defend yourself against a baseball. Once the pitcher releases it, there is no going back. Wherever that ball goes, that’s just where it goes. The pitcher may get thrown out and get a FIVE day suspension which maybe would cause them to miss one start. Whereas the hitter may miss the rest of the season or the rest of his career if something happens. There is no appealing an injury like a suspension. There is no good excuse for intentionally hitting batters. If the pitcher doesn’t like it, let the guys know. Don’t just cheap shot him with a 90+ mph fastball up and in. It’s a bit of a coward move in my opinion

Before Jordan, that was an inevitably. Interior defense isn't as stressed as much anymore and dunks do not send anywhere near as strong a message as they used to. Dunks also account for about 1/50 of a team's scoring in an average game, about 1/33 if it's And 1.
A homer might account anywhere from absolutely meaningless to an entire team's offensive output for the game. It means more to scoring and team morale, so tensions can be high after. (Though, I personally think of homers as rally killers, also)
The ubiquity of both events - homers and dunks in the modern era reduce psychological effects of both. I do not condone throwing at batters (I'm one myself), but if players want to make these events bigger than they are or need to be, it's also gamesmanship to put them back in their place somehow.

Imagine you're the pitcher. It's bases loaded, two outs, and the batter hits the ball toward the warning track in the gap. The center fielder sprints toward the ball, makes a superb dive, and grabs the ball just before it hits the ground. Alternatively, it's a full count, you throw a nasty curveball, the batter whiffs, and now you've gotten out of that inning. The pitcher has full license to yell, celebrate, fist pump, the whole deal.
So why, if you're a batter, are you not allowed to celebrate when you do something well? You hit a home run, you get excited, you give the bat a toss, and you celebrate around the bases. In that first scenario, the batter will be pissed off that they got fooled on a pitch a foot out of the zone, and the pitcher is allowed to celebrate. Why can't the batter celebrate a home run just because the pitcher is pissed off?

The tread of bat flips is only going to go up with time, I could see it becoming a form of protest by the hitters that want to be able to show off there personality more on the field and reading the comment sections in all the videos I've watched of Andersons HR it would appear that the majority of people seem to be in favor of the hitters and pitchers being able to celebrate within reason... It makes the game fun and interesting hate it or love it, it gives the fans a player to hate or love... root for them or against them but no baseball fan or player should have the ill intent of injuring another player and it be celebrated... the pitchers need to sack up and act like professional adults, boo-hoo you got homered on and bat flipped on, maybe stay focused on getting the strike outs since hitters cant bat flip on you if your not giving up HRs... and then do there fist bumps every strike out and for all i care throw there glove in the air after a no-hitter but dont be offended when someone celebrates the fact they just accomplished one of the toughest feats in professional sports... hit a HR off a professional pitcher.

To me, there's just something a lot more intimidating about taking someone deep and acting like it's strictly business. Or striking out the side and walking off the mound cool and calm as can be. With that said, if you hit a walk off in the world series, you can use the bat as a pogo stick. If you hit a solo shot in the first inning...just act like you've been there before. No, people like me aren't sensitive to expression. We don't clench our fists and put holes in the wall, or whatever stupid exaggeration you want to make. If you want people to understand why it should be accepted to be overly expressive, then understand why others respect a more professional approach. If you want to slam your bat during a basic moment, you deal with the little 95 to the buttocks. If you hit a walk off to win the pennant, you l̶e̶t̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶r̶ ̶t̶e̶a̶m̶ ̶r̶i̶p̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶r̶ ̶s̶h̶i̶r̶t̶ ̶o̶f̶f̶ can celebrate how ever you want. It's always been part of baseball.

Let the batter celebrate. If a pitcher can celebrate for a perfect game then a player should flip the bat when he hits a home run. And KBO and Nippon Professional Baseball does bat flip all the time. And it's funny that they think having a "disagreement" is saying that he's wrong or that he doesn't know what he's talking about. Lol

THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE TO BAT FLIP (LIKE THEY SAID). THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE TO FIST PUMP. A 3RD INNING 2 RUN SHOT ON WEEK 2 OF THE SEASON IS NOT THE TIME OR PLACE. Jesus christ people have some pride in being humble.

Let them fight simple ... a lot of pitches will stop throwing at a batter if they know they going to get there ass kicked.

I was a great hitter all my life and I was also hit by many of pitches, I knew how to get hit and absorb the ball and none of those hit by pitches were on purpose. That being said it still hurt like a mug and these MLB pitchers are blatantly throwing at batters at way harder pitch velocity than I was ever hit by, I couldn’t even imagine.

ro Flo hit the nail on the head there's less old heads in the mlb and it should be ok to hit a homer and show emotion without getting 95 in the back

If you hit a homerun of a guy I think you should be able to celebrate, as a pitcher if I give up a homerun and he batfilps I’ll be mad but at the end of the day I let him hit that homerun he can do whatever he wants.
