I must admit the dust on this LC originates from the time it sat on the top of my shelves, but the grease was already there when l got it. To see it bright and shiny again makes me happy.
Cleaning things before playing with them is always worth it. Feels so much better. Same as cleaning the workshop. You feel like you want to go in and start on things
This goes beyond a good video. RUclips is full of “Scrapping” (meaning destructive recycling, the least effective method), “Repurposing” (meaning one-off toys), etc. Few do what you are doing. True restoration. Mr. Carlson’s Lab is great for very serious work. Your channel is the only practical application for real people. Bravo. Keep these coming.
I always enjoy seeing restorations. Yours turned up great. I'm also glad you mentioned the 8 bit guy. I like his videos as well and his sense of humor.
I have used thick household bleach to successfully remove the yellowing on several old items of computer equipment I have worked on. I didn't need to expose them to any form of UV light, just apply, scrubb and rinse! Your Mac looks great though. Nice job!
Oh man, I was always saving your vids to watch later, with the result that I've now got several months worth of TPAI videos to catch up. My resolution is to watch at least one each day, so that it becomes possible to be caught up quite soon.
In the future you should use the new method with liquid Wasserstoffperoxid instead the salon creamer. It protects the parts to get streaks You can see themethod by the 8-bit guy
I replaced the teflon pads on the bottom of my Apple ADB mouse by buying some 0.3mm thick PTFE sheeting, and 31.5 & 13.5mm diameter hole punches off ebay; sticking them on with double-sided tape. Although 0.5mm thick sheeting may have been a better option. Happy to send you a replacement set, if you don't want to go to the trouble of getting all the gear for just one mouse.
I had one of those. Bought new 1991, I think. A lot of money for a student. A fine machine, well made and with clean, good looking lines. Very nice keyboard. But the LC wad a bit on the slow side with the 68020 processor. The discontinued SE30 was actually faster. Still, I used the LC for abt four years.
For washing plastics (without rusting metal parts) a dishwasher is quite useful. However, make sure to use colder wash and no drying (typically the short cycle).
Hey guys, I want to encourage you to also check out my last episode, that I uploaded only four days ago. Nobody really watched it since it came out on a Monday, but it's really not THAT bad :D ruclips.net/video/ZV07rEzcZrk/видео.html
I have several transparent ikea plastic boxes. The two oldest are about 15 years old and I bought the newer ones (samla) within the last 5 years or so. I have no problem with the boxes breaking. At least the are not worse than other boxes in my humble opinion. They are not exposed to direct sunlight in my use case.
The spacebar is yellowed because its made from a different material from the rest of the keys. Due to its shape the material that the other keys are made from is harder to injection mold.
Do R/C! Yeah the space bar is made out of ABS plastic while the keycaps that do not yellow are made out of PBT. You're right, the only reason they used ABS for the space bar is because PBT of that size would be prone to warping.
I personally like the liquid submersion method(1/4 hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 generic Oxy Clean, 1/2 warm water) with clear plastic tubs that have tight fitting lids with latches, and I sit them on my back patio on days where it gets above 80F(26C), as here in S. Carolina USA I get a lot of direct sunlight in my backyard that makes the patio, and backside of my house upwards of 20F warmer in the spring, summer, and early fall months then the surrounding air.
Still remember when a did play Sim City 2000 on a Apple Macintosh LC in the 90s when a was a kid. Not sure if we still have in storage or it have been recycled for 10 years ago. Nice video like always TPAI :)
I always use the Ozone gas method now and it's works great. The generator was about £30 I think. I changed from the cream method because it's very difficult to get an even result on larger items as I found out but luckily I had another donor case which I used instead and use the Ozone method on. Yes the Ozone method does take longer than the cream but the results are worth it; no mess either.
You should also put a uv-resistant transparent coating layer or ot will yeallow again, but that time faster... There are some coatings used to make yeallowed headlights that passed the sandpaper method to not yellow again.
Absolutely amazing results! Really quite impressed by what just soaking them in soapy water can do if you leave them a while. The peroxide does wonders as well.
Nice work!! I owned this LC two decades ago, and from my memory, keyboard keys where nearly the same color than framing. BTW, did you boot it? Look like your screen stays black. Is the LC making the Apple melody when you power it on?
Thumbs up for showing ur pot belly.... :)~ nice work... i cant wait to see u get this working again. What r u going to do with it when u fix it?? use it or put it in ur museum under perspex glass :)
Can I just say to how impressively washing machine powder works for cleaning stuff like this? I tried many different things but it's 100x better than anything else.
those salmon alps in the apple keyboard need to be cleaned as well, judging by how dirty that keyboard is i bet a few of those keys feel a bit gross. there are you-tube tutorials on this. the space bar is abs, the rest of the key-caps on the keyboard are pbt a plastic that doesn't yellow nearly as bad or as fast. also make sure not to go too far, because the stronger solutions can destroy the dye compounds that give the abs it's color. i think achieving a consistent finish is more important than completely retrobrighting everything.
I kept it to a single layer of plastic wrap, and thin amounts of the liquid. Even though I only used indoor fluorescent lamps, the results were perfect.
Hi! I have a LC 475 that looks similar to yours, but without the monitor, keyboard and hard drive. I know it boots because the sound plays and everything is working. What should I do with it? It's just been sitting around for a long time.
I want to retrobright my apple color display 14 m1212. Have you ever did retrobright in one of those? I got mine in a Macintosh Lot i purchased in 2017 and is completely filthy and yellow as hell.
recently a neighbor who buys old houses, renovates them, and sells them for more money, bought a property which had some old computers. Someone who was into computers could have had a great time with all that was down there. But unfortunately, most of it went into scrap. Most the stuff was not to ancient, but modern enough that it was "worthless" when compared to anything new. I feel sad no one had any interest in the old computers.
aaaand it doesn't work, because every LC out there needs a recap of both the logic board and PSU. 68kmla peeps suggest using surface mount tants for the board and then whatever your favorite brand of electrolytics for the PSU.
try a small clear tub with a tight lid, and use 1/4 liquid hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 generic Oxiclean powder, and 1/2 warm water or enough to cover the part/s you are working on. set it in the sun on a hot day above 80F(26C), and that usually works for me with most items in about a day if not less, that is after giving them a good clean with warm water, and dish soap.
I must admit the dust on this LC originates from the time it sat on the top of my shelves, but the grease was already there when l got it. To see it bright and shiny again makes me happy.
I have an LC sitting on a shelf in my basement. This gives me some motivation to get it out and fix it up!
@David Gusev I'm guessing, no.
Cleaning things before playing with them is always worth it. Feels so much better. Same as cleaning the workshop. You feel like you want to go in and start on things
You are not wrong - and that is an incentive to keep it clean, but that rarely happens, well for a couple of days maybe :)

Same!
My kind of content, thanks for helping to keep the spirit of DIY alive.
Great results on the Retrobright! Looks like there might even be hope for my old gadgets!
Your dog understands german. Smart dog
This is the exact same model my father had for work, but we had the scanner and laser printer as well, this brought me back. Great work, by the way.
In the future you should use the new method with liquid Wasserstoffperoxid instead the salon creamer. It protects the parts to get streaks

You're so right about the transparent boxes stiffening/shattering nightmare.

Cant wait to see those upcoming videos, you are amazing
Wow, you are so awesome. This is truly oddly satisfying.
Times when you could take apart Apple computer and put it back together with just the screwdriver :)
actually when you had no screws these were clips
I had one of those. Bought new 1991, I think. A lot of money for a student. A fine machine, well made and with clean, good looking lines. Very nice keyboard. I have finished de-yellowing most of my Heathkit HERO 2000 (ET-19) robot. What a difference.
Excellent stuff, as usual. Thank you. Les in UK

every day you learn something! really useful video! thank you
Superb job.
nice

This i have to do it too for my Mac LC III. I hope to succeed. Good job and great video thanks
The monitor looks like a lot of work. Great results.
I used to have LC 475. Brings back memories.
That is one clean macintosh machine
Good job!
Alps Salmon keyboard switches. Nice.
Beautiful!
Excellent
Love your vids! :)
Great job
you are creative

Nice restoration! I have also used this method.
that keyboard sounds so good
Now, if only modern apple products were built with this quality.
Top JOB fella 😎
Still remember when a did play Sim City 2000 on a Apple Macintosh LC in the 90s when a was a kid. Not sure if we still have in storage or it have been recycled for 10 years ago. Nice video like always TPAI :)
Hitting like before watching 😊

Super Ergebnis. Hab noch ein paar originale Macinthosh II. Werde das mal Ausprobieren.
Grüße aus München.
That's a one good boi at the end.

Very beautiful result, it was time with the LC, a beautiful computer. Thank you for sharing your amazing story
I first thought it was a Video from the 8-Bit-Guy, but then I was pleasantly surprised!
Thumbs up for showing ur pot belly.... :)~ nice work... i cant wait to see u get this working again. What r u going to do with it when u fix it?? use it or put it in ur museum under perspex glass :)
amazing, we can easily disassemble apple products back then, something we can't do to apple products these days. .
💯
I'm loving the cameo from TPAI lab assistant at the end! What's his name?
CRT out? Bugga! Here come the new Cap's! :D
Can I just say to how impressively washing machine powder works for cleaning stuff like this? I tried many different things but it's 100x better than anything else.
Schöner Hund! Ist das jetzt Deiner?
Ah, the pizza box macintosh! Fine memories!

If the IKEA plastic boxes are brittle (they are , I have several) is there a make or range you recommend ? Maybe a comparison test might be useful ?
Here before a million views
That must to be very hard works to restore a mac
If you like uneven white streaks and discoloration, ie Blooming, or very bleached plastics, use plastic wrap as show in this video!
I kept it to a single layer of plastic wrap, and thin amounts of the liquid. Even though I only used indoor fluorescent lamps, the results were perfect.
I wonder if you could use mirrors or polished metal surfaces (like sunbathing) to reflect UV onto the surfaces you want exposed.
👍
Wow thanks excellent work. Just look at the internal parts I bet a modern apple won't look as good it 30 years ; -) pmsl
Hi! I have a LC 475 that looks similar to yours, but without the monitor, keyboard and hard drive.
I know it boots because the sound plays and everything is working. What should I do with it?
It's just been sitting around for a long time.
Amazing results
these white computers that turn into yellow has good memories
😁😁😁
The small electrolytic SMT capacitors on the logic board on these are NOTORIOUS for leaking and damaging the circuit board traces beneath.
I have one and i am planning to restore it..do you know where i can keys for the keyboard or any spare parts ?
I still use LC II and LC 630 computers. I use old flat lcd Samsung tv monitors with pc vga converter, much better picture to look at.
thats why i buy black plastics on my computer parts today!!
Wasn't the original color more of a tan, than a gray?
I want to retrobright my apple color display 14 m1212. Have you ever did retrobright in one of those? I got mine in a Macintosh Lot i purchased in 2017 and is completely filthy and yellow as hell.

You are so clever I would love to live next door to you
No you don’t
Why didn't you use a brush to spread the foam ?
aaaand it doesn't work, because every LC out there needs a recap of both the logic board and PSU. 68kmla peeps suggest using surface mount tants for the board and then whatever your favorite brand of electrolytics for the PSU.
Ah, the Mac LC with System 6, 9600 baud modem, and AOL ...... those were the days.
This computer should be in museum. Or shown to today's teenagers.
10:02 "Aus" means "stop" in german right? There's a warning bulb in my car (audi) which says "ABS Aus"
I think it mean OUT
In this case it means "off"
@@Muslim_011
I checked it with a translator, indeed it actually means "out".
@@kartaloktay yeah exactly.
it means "off"
Oh no! Y and Z keys have changed places! lol
....... Would the Retrobright work on the Labrador ?
Do you think that method could work for yellowed old silicon smartphone cases, or is there a better way of making them transparent again?
I have this problem too, several cases.
try a small clear tub with a tight lid, and use 1/4 liquid hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 generic Oxiclean powder, and 1/2 warm water or enough to cover the part/s you are working on. set it in the sun on a hot day above 80F(26C), and that usually works for me with most items in about a day if not less, that is after giving them a good clean with warm water, and dish soap.
Hi, the8bitguy
Where is Rinoa? He will like this video, 100%
Hydrogen peroxide creme method popularised by 8 Bit Guy?? :) No, it was pretty popular well before Dave's video :)
What that is hard works and that LC Mac back by speak program back in 90s.
You know 8-bit guy soaks in a water with the peroxide
where is the next part? i can't find it
it looks like it was in an industrial environment.
