In all fairness, I really don't see how either Tarja nor Floor could perform this song better. This is IMO easily the best of the Anette Olsen era, and one of Nightwish's very best songs ever.

Such symbolism in the lyrics. For instance: "All the dying children" It to me, talks about a loss of innocence. It really goes well with the theme of being caged into what is being called "reality's maze". This cage is golden, so, a lot of luxury, but ultimately, still a cage, it doesn't satiate the nightingale. Reality really is like a maze. A lot of dead ends and not knowing where to go to get to the place you wish to be. The singer is, of course, the nightingale. Nightingales holds different symbolism, but, the easiest ones to know of is, their song is thought of as sorrowful, or sometimes joyous. It is like, a soul song. Goes well, since she is singing about escaping "reality", as the title of the song suggests, "The Escapist". It feels like to me, her soul is caged. She sings the bittersweet melody of a nightingale. To me personally, "reality" symbolises the society values and systems in place, the things that cage your soul. Really, it will be different for everyone. But, it is the things that make you lose your child like wonder and lust for life, the things that drain your soul, the things that make you feel, well... dead. I mean, it is just my view of what the lyrics mean, but, i think the things that can make you feel this loss of innocence is something that can be different for each individual, the loss of the innocent mind, the loss of vitality for life, the love for life, the imagination and wonder of a child... Just my thoughts. :)
Dark Passion Play is a great album and that's also because of Anette. I don't think Tarja or Floor could have given the songs the magical touch like Anette did. While Tarja's songs sound more like very enjoyable operas and Floor has a powerful voice, Anette does something to the songs that turns them into fairy tales. And I like that very much.

***** Yes, Anette got fired in 2012 and got replaced by Floor Jensen which is the currently lead singer of Nightwish... give her few years and Nightwish will boot her out as well. At the time, Anetter got pregnant and Nightwish wanted to continue their tour. During the tour, they happen to find Floor Jensen to fill in for Anette. So, Nightwish decided to fire Anette and give the job to Floor. They already released an album with Floor Jensen this year called: "Endless Forms Most Beautiful".

Even though there's no argument that Tarja has a much more powerful voice than Annette, I like Annette's softer vocals in this song, especially when she sings the first verse. I'm not sure Tarja's voice would work as well with this song. I'm also curious about how it would sound with Floor's voice though.

You know, It´s sad how people are still arguing about Nightwish´s singer and writing dumb stuff like "Nightwish is dead since Tarja´s departure" and "Anette sucks". Things change with time, styles, bands, everything. It´s the cycle of life and you have to accept that, or you will be stranded, complaining about the past and viewing your best years passing thorough your eyes. Ok, too much philosophy.....About the song, this one is particullary one of my favorites from Nightwish and I´m identified with it. Maybe it´s coincidence, but my favorite songs from Nightwish were precisely sung by Anette Olzen.
+Gary de la Hoz Sanjuan Can't we just agree that they are both amazing in their own ways? Anette may not be Tarja but that doesn't make her a bad singer by any means. Dark Passion Play is still, in my opinion, one of the greatest albums Nightwish has ever released.

Sure Tarja COULD sing this, but this song didn't exist her era in Nightwish. Actually Tarja was singing classical style only in her first 3 albums, they changed her style to contemporary style singing in her last 2 albums. So her style was the same as Anette's and Floor's style in the two last albums, only that at times Tarja uses the classical voice, but the style still is different to her earliest albums. Easy to see the difference with the Sleeping Sun which was recorded twice, 1999 version she sang classical style and 2005 version in contemporary style. every time i listen to anettes voice with nightwish espesially i feel like i am in fairyland .... every song it's like a farytale from an imaginary word... that in my oponion was the Beauty anettes voice offered to nightwish and even tarja couldnt do that beacouse of her classical singin style aka opera... it didnt allowed her to be so expretional in other styles than opera .... i know beacouse i sing opera and it's dificult to sing anything else besides that with emotion and if you want to sing anything else you have to change you style beacouse it will sound weird even thgou tarja managed to make it sound good

Beautiful song. What I think of when I hear this song is I really wish I could just put on a backpack and start walking to travel the world and it would actually work out. That would be the ultimate freedom and many amazing experiences along the way. If I didn't have connections in real life I even feel I could go to start up a group of equally crazy people right now who would do the same and leave life behind. It also would be empowering for a lot of people people that they do not absolutely need their jobs even if they hate it and do not need to stay with people who abuse them if they happen to live in the same house. Realistically I know it wont work well at all, but it feels wrong we humans should be so bound to material property and money, when most animals just live and walk everywhere with nothing

Jukka and Marko will be missed and will always be a part of the Nightwish magic but we look forward now. Nightwish keeps the magic alive. I have been to 5 of their shows in the past year and they are just the most amazing band to experience.

Even though there's no argument that Tarja has a much more powerful voice than Annette, I like Annette's softer vocals in this song, especially when she sings the first verse. I'm not sure Tarja's voice would work as well with this song.
I'm also curious about how it would sound with Floor's voice though.

You know, It´s sad how people are still arguing about Nightwish´s singer and writing dumb stuff like "Nightwish is dead since Tarja´s departure" and "Anette sucks". Things change with time, styles, bands, everything. It´s the cycle of life and you have to accept that, or you will be stranded, complaining about the past and viewing your best years passing thorough your eyes.
Ok, too much philosophy.....About the song, this one is particullary one of my favorites from Nightwish and I´m identified with it. Maybe it´s coincidence, but my favorite songs from Nightwish were precisely sung by Anette Olzen.
+Gary de la Hoz Sanjuan Can't we just agree that they are both amazing in their own ways? Anette may not be Tarja but that doesn't make her a bad singer by any means. Dark Passion Play is still, in my opinion, one of the greatest albums Nightwish has ever released.

Great song, great band. I agree that hearing it being sung by Tarja would be interesting. But I also think that of the songs annette sang with nightwish, this is one of the best ones for her voice. Sahara is another one.

I don't get whats the deal with Annette and Tarja .. i mean they are both good.When Tarja was the singer the style/kind of the songs was different cause she was more like a opera singer.Now the style of singing is completely different(normally).Also such comments i've read somewhere as "It would be interesting to hear Tarja singing this"..well obviously she can't sing that song since her voice,as I said,is completely different.
I don't think it's a matter of voice but mostly linguistic ability, I don't think Tarja is able to speak English that fast.
Sure Tarja COULD sing this, but this song didn't exist her era in Nightwish. Actually Tarja was singing classical style only in her first 3 albums, they changed her style to contemporary style singing in her last 2 albums. So her style was the same as Anette's and Floor's style in the two last albums, only that at times Tarja uses the classical voice, but the style still is different to her earliest albums. Easy to see the difference with the Sleeping Sun which was recorded twice, 1999 version she sang classical style and 2005 version in contemporary style.

every time i listen to anettes voice with nightwish espesially i feel like i am in fairyland .... every song it's like a farytale from an imaginary word... that in my oponion was the Beauty anettes voice offered to nightwish and even tarja couldnt do that beacouse of her classical singin style aka opera... it didnt allowed her to be so expretional in other styles than opera .... i know beacouse i sing opera and it's dificult to sing anything else besides that with emotion and if you want to sing anything else you have to change you style beacouse it will sound weird even thgou tarja managed to make it sound good

Beautiful song. What I think of when I hear this song is I really wish I could just put on a backpack and start walking to travel the world and it would actually work out. That would be the ultimate freedom and many amazing experiences along the way. If I didn't have connections in real life I even feel I could go to start up a group of equally crazy people right now who would do the same and leave life behind. It also would be empowering for a lot of people people that they do not absolutely need their jobs even if they hate it and do not need to stay with people who abuse them if they happen to live in the same house. Realistically I know it wont work well at all, but it feels wrong we humans should be so bound to material property and money, when most animals just live and walk everywhere with nothing

Jukka and Marko will be missed and will always be a part of the Nightwish magic but we look forward now. Nightwish keeps the magic alive. I have been to 5 of their shows in the past year and they are just the most amazing band to experience.
