Hi, thanks for sharing the video. I have purchased the JR Pass and reserved the JR Excursion 7 (car 2). The JR reservation can only reserve up to Otsuki. Is it true I don't need to get off the train at Otsuki, and just wait until the conductor comes and I pay the additional fare from Otsuki to Kawahuchiko which is not covered by JR Pass? If not, what is the best way to secure my seats all the way to Kawaguchiko? Thanks for your help!
Thank you for giving important question for everyone. Simply put, you only have to pay additional fare (1,770) for the conductor on the train. Let me explain in details. Japan Rail Pass (nation wide type) is valid only until JR Otsuki station. On the Japan Rail Pass seat reservation website or JR ticket counter, you can book your seat until Otsuki station as well. Though you don’t have reservation from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko, the vehicle doesn’t change, just keeps on going to Kawaguchiko. So you only have to stay your seat. After leaving Otsuki, the conductor will start checking passengers tickets, so please ask him or her to buy additional fare(1,770) Actually, booking seats only from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko cannot be permitted by the regulations. Instead, passengers can buy “vacant seat or standing ticket”. Passengers getting on at Otsuki station try to find vacant seats. Therefore, if you leave your seat to buy something or for toilet, someone may rob your seat. So, I recommend to remain seated after Otsuki station. Sorry to be too long… If you need more information, you can ask me.
