Mark 3: 1 - 12; Jesus Heals on the Sabbath: Part 1

In our last study, I outlined the controversies that have taken place in Mark's Gospel so far. Mark lays out a total of five controversies that lead up to the Pharisee's plot against Christ. The last study focused on the Pharisees questioning Christ concerning the Sabbath and the behaviors they witnessed from the Disciples on the Sabbath being against the law. As I stated in the last study, breaking the Sabbath laws regarding work was a capital offense punishable by death. In today's episode, the question of the Sabbath goes a bit further, as it is not the disciples found in error in the eyes of the Pharisees on this occasion; it is Christ Himself.
Please remember the Pharisees' problems with Christ don't arise from His teachings or healings. They know He is something more than just another teacher. Their difficulty with Christ is personal because their very life is built on the things Christ's actions are challenging. Christ forgives sins; therefore, there is no more eye for an eye, no need for revenge. He is communing with the lowest individuals in society; thus, their faux piety is highlighted as self-righteousness. Christ is changing their fasting standards, thus refusing to accept how they do things. Now, He is coming after their Holy Day, their traditions, and they will not allow that. Is this not a picture of every sinner before they are called? We like Christ; He's okay, but we want the teaching we agree with; we want blessings and healing, but we don't want to sacrifice those things that separate us from God.
Today, we will pick up in Mark, chapter 3, verses 1 - 6.
