They don't serve the same purpose self driving cars are personally owned and operated air taxis are commercial ventures similar to aerial taxi services which already exist but with more flexibility . People tend to assume this is intended to be a personally owned consumer product

If you image it to fail like a blue screen of death - at that altitude you won't have time for parachutes, wont finish your prayer or messaging your loved ones. That's why it must come with redundant fail-safe systems like an aircraft.

Depending on the whether and payload, the vehicle can make 15-30 minutes flight. So short-medium distance : )
