Surprisingly, minus the inversion table, I built my gym during the pandemic for $700. I either got really lucky with Amazon or Facebook Marketplace. Still a little high, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
not huge differences really. just different bars. all 3 will need a rack, bar, plates, bench, dumbbells, and flooring/mats. only difference is powerlifting and strongman will want a true “Power bar” with whatever plates, crossfit will want an “Olympic bar” with bumper plates.
I really like the emphasis on the spotter arms. Absolutely the scariest thing ever to fail lifting back to the rack and have to struggle to get the weight off the chest. Will not go to failure alone without spotter arms ever again.
Watching this in August of 2020 and the prices are more than double for everything. The ""Beast" Bar went from $125.96 in this video to $395. We need a COVID update to this list ha.
BEST deal was a $500, 1,000 lbs capacity power rack with pulley system, dip bars, pull-up bars etc, adjustable bench w leg developer for $180, 300 lbs Olympic weights w bar for $280, Yes4All 200 lbs adjustable dumbbells for $200 and then, quarantine happened and everything tripled in price or sold-out, buuut, I’ve managed to put 30 lbs back on! :)
Hey Coop, this is pretty much my home gym. Only difference is I went with The Boss barbell since a lot of people reported The Beast splintering metal. I ended up ditching the Amazon Basics bench - it was not very stable. I picked up a bench from Rep Fitness on Black Friday.
Don't we all? The ads I get when I have a lapse in judgment and use normal browsing are unbearable lmao I'll look up specs on a rack or bar on google and I'll get bombarded with gym equipment ads for the next few weeks
If you insist on benching alone without spotter arms, just don't put collars on. This way you can lean one way or another and dump the weights off the bar.
Jason Genova it’s kind of bull as long as you don’t lift crazy heavy. As long as you lift what you k ow you can and you’re careful and know the roll of shame you should be fine
Gym in the thumbnail isn't going to be too much more. Probably $1,200 ($600 for dumbbells, $300 for plate loaded lat pulldown, $300 for bench, barbell and some plates). There isn't a squat rack though so add that in and you'd be around $1,500.
@@boxlad7583 for something halfway decent, yes. But for a budget option, you can (probably not right now) find a bar cheap beater bar and 200 lbs-ish of plates for $300 or less.
@@Pler1978 It can be done, if you're patient. I found a power rack with a lat pulldown attachment, Olympic bar, full set of weights, and a bunch of accessories on CL -- all for $250. The guy just wanted them out of his garage. It's not the greatest or most versatile power rack, but for that price -- I'm not complaining.
These racks and benches are good if your not planing on lifting real weights tbh... If your a big guy that already weighs almost 300lbs or more... what do you wanna bench or squat?
Great video!! I like how you walked us through how/where to get them on Amazon/Walmart, etc. Plus, while you're pointing out and choosing the equipment that's for 'this' project, you point out stuff that's a step up. And the quick shot of you doing chest w the dumbbells while the bench was rolling was pretty funny. I like that (it seems) you make it a point to be a real student of this area. Nice work... 👍👍
Don't know why he would suggest a flat bench instead of a incline. (Other than cost) Incline bench is a lot more versatile especially if you have limited space
I train (weighted) calisthenics + squats this is what I bought over the years: 1. Pullup Bar €50 2. Dip Bar €50 3. Weighted vest €50 4. Squat rack €250 5. Barbell €150 6. 2x 10kg adjustable dumbells €30 7. Home made concrete weightplates €20 startup cost then €5 per 20kg The squat rack is the highest expense but they are just really expensive where I live.
I had a rogue sml 1 with a rogue bench rogue 45lb plates and a cap barbell and some dumbbells before the virus hit thank god. Since then I’ve purchased ez bar curl, preacher curl machine, sissy squat, Leg machine, adjustable bench, 55lb rubber plates, Lat pull down machine, gym flooring/ paint for garage a speaker got a pull up bar. Found 13 feet of free mirrors that I hanged up, made a crossmember/ pulley/cable crossover with my sml-1. Made a weight tree knowing that when it’s over I still will go to a commercial gym.
Honestly prefer this sort of video to your newer ones. The newer ones almost feel too polished for a garage gym lol, need a bit of grottiness in there.

I'm still rocking my Weider Club 500 gym that I bought at Sams Club 20 years ago. I think I paid like $300-$400...still working great and does many exercises.
Honestly, if you're on a budget, 1 inch bar. 1 inch plates are much cheaper(brand new is usually about 1/2 the price) and you can still do plenty with them, you could get a lot more weight for the price. I can easily throw 100lbs on a decent dumbbell and about 150-200+ on a good barbell which is plenty for most people, especially on a budget. Just my 2 cents on the matter, I personally struggle with the idea of going up to 2 inch plates because they cost so much more
Just bought my home gym stuff last week, didn't look at this video beforehand but I'm glad to say I bought the rack you recommend here. I spent a little extra to get a Texas Power Bar. Still have to get my bench but I need an adjustable for incline press and I'm gonna be building my own platform in the next few days. Man they are EXPENSIVE to buy ready made. Probably just buy the cheapest bumper plates I can find, or near to it. 300 lbs is 300 lbs whether it's Rogue or Cap. Might get some regular iron plates from York just to be hardcore, if I think my platform work is good.
I got the fitness reality cage with pulldown and 3-45s on each side on plate holders. Also on a wood platform. Maybe a little side-to-side movement when rocking it but no wobbling. Solid during actual use
Couple years ago I ended up buying a $60 CAP 6' Oly bar from Walmart, and at a local fitness shop a squat stand for about $150 and a good bench for around $250. Plates came out to be about $1.20 per lb on average, I think. I did pretty well considering I didn't know what I was looking for when I started shopping.
If you expand your search on Craigslist to include citys within 200 mile radius you can usually find better equipment for the same price as the low end stuff on Amazon. I bought a nice full rack used for $200. A uaws commercial grade freemotion dual cable machine for $900. Dicks has a good package with a barbell and full set of olympic plates for $300. My entire home gym including horse mat flooring, cable machine, full squat rack, barbell, full set of olympic weights, full set of barbells with rack cost me about $1800. I have everything I need and I'm now focused on working out instead of focused on buying new equipment.
Mic cutting out is freakin annoying. And where u cut money is getting a standard bar instead of Olympic. U dont need an olympic bar u probably arnt gonna be using more than 4 or 500 lbs and if so by the time u do u will save up 150 for an ok olympic bar. And it's way more versatile to get an adjustable dB bench instead of a flat

I want at least 6 45 Olympic plates and even choosing the cheapest plates, them alone are already $450. So the idealistic range is really around 800-1000.
The only caution I would make is that bench. 41” is too short. I have a 41” bench at work and hate it. You need at least 46-47” length. Even in the video it shows the guy being dragged behind the car and you will notice the bench is not long enough to rest his head on. I also have the Fitness Reality adjustable bench which works really well. He went right past it in the video.
Got to haunt the thrift stores regularly man! Many years ago I got 385 pounds of standard cast iron plates ranging from 20 lbs down to 1 1/4 lbs sizes with three standard straight 25lb bars and two sets of dumbbell bars all complete with all their collars to put the plates on for $30 for the collection. They were all rusty and dirty. They cleaned up like new with a wire brush, some spray primer and paint. Have since painted them again after 35years out on my back porch. Got a Sears or JC Penny bench with incline capability, leg attachment and squat rack back in the mid 1980s to go with those free weights, not sure what I paid for that...maybe a couple hundred bucks tops. It was new at the time. Bent curl bar was about $10, and a few years ago I picked up a complete Total Gym 1000 (a very base model but still great) in virtually perfect condition with all its attachments AND the book and poster for $25. Can't beat that with a stick! A pile of pairs of small 1lb to 15lb cast iron dumbbells and 4 sizes of kettlebells from the local second hand sporting goods store for maybe a $1 a pound rounds it out. Got a used magnetic resistance trainer stand for my bicycle off ebay for about $17 so I can ride indoors in bad weather. Got a 75Lb canvas heavy bag for about $30, cover was old and shredded, bought a couple yards of canvas and some seat belt material at the fabric store and sewed a new cover myself. Welded up my own Thor's hammer dumbbell bar with collar out of some scrap in my welding pile. Glorious for forearms. Getting ready to weld up a stand for the heavy bag, new house doesn't have a porch to hang it from... And some new racks for all the weights and bars. Scrap steel goes for about $1.89/lb around here. Yard sales are good too!! And moving sales! Got a monster big multi stack home gym station one time for FREE for helping a friend move. He had to move in a hurry and didn't want it anymore. Was probably about a $1200 unit new back in its day. Used it for a couple years off and on, but it was a little too big for me (I'm a 5'4" woman and a lot of the equipment out there just has too wide a stance or reach for my size) and ended up giving it away to a friend. He used it for a few months and dropped 50lbs right away! You would be amazed what you can get second hand for dirt cheap. Some people will just give you stuff if you can haul it away for them. And then I got a nice recumbent bike free a few years ago for my 15year service gift from the company I was working for. That was a definite upgrade from the little lapel pin I got for my 3 year gift... Now, if I would just get off my posterior, uncover the pile of stuff in my workshop and actually start using it all again... :/

@@GymPerformance Agreed
Surprisingly, minus the inversion table, I built my gym during the pandemic for $700. I either got really lucky with Amazon or Facebook Marketplace. Still a little high, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
I would love to see the 1k home gym.
This was so useful, I'm starting to collect equipment slowly but surely.
I think we all agree that it needs a price update 😂
Could you do budget builds for different fitness disciplines? Like $750 Strongman Gym, $750 Crossfit Gym, $750 Powerlifting Gym, etc.
Thomas Burkhart thats a good idea and its a lot of content, 500,750,1000 etc for strongman,bb,pl etc
Thomas Burkhart id love to see that series!
not huge differences really. just different bars. all 3 will need a rack, bar, plates, bench, dumbbells, and flooring/mats. only difference is powerlifting and strongman will want a true “Power bar” with whatever plates, crossfit will want an “Olympic bar” with bumper plates.
so excited for a few months when all this equipment goes up for sale!!!!
@Randy Marsh doubt it

I really like the emphasis on the spotter arms. Absolutely the scariest thing ever to fail lifting back to the rack and have to struggle to get the weight off the chest. Will not go to failure alone without spotter arms ever again.
More like $10,000 cuz everyone thinks barbells are $25/lbs

Hey Coop, this is pretty much my home gym. Only difference is I went with The Boss barbell since a lot of people reported The Beast splintering metal. I ended up ditching the Amazon Basics bench - it was not very stable. I picked up a bench from Rep Fitness on Black Friday.

Gym in the thumbnail isn't going to be too much more. Probably $1,200 ($600 for dumbbells, $300 for plate loaded lat pulldown, $300 for bench, barbell and some plates). There isn't a squat rack though so add that in and you'd be around $1,500.
Dylan K Johnson a barbell alone is 150-200+, and 45 pound plates are anywhere from 50-100+ per plate depending on the coating

Good god, the audio/video chop on this video hurts the concentration!
Now trying to do something like this would cost you $10,000
Omgm
Great video!! I like how you walked us through how/where to get them on Amazon/Walmart, etc. Plus, while you're pointing out and choosing the equipment that's for 'this' project, you point out stuff that's a step up. And the quick shot of you doing chest w the dumbbells while the bench was rolling was pretty funny. I like that (it seems) you make it a point to be a real student of this area. Nice work... 👍👍
You're welcome
Don't know why he would suggest a flat bench instead of a incline. (Other than cost) Incline bench is a lot more versatile especially if you have limited space
Idk maybe cost?
@@Pler1978 I was surprised he didn't mention getting bands, extremely versatile equipment for very cheap.
I train (weighted) calisthenics + squats this is what I bought over the years:
1. Pullup Bar €50
2. Dip Bar €50
3. Weighted vest €50
4. Squat rack €250
5. Barbell €150
6. 2x 10kg adjustable dumbells €30
7. Home made concrete weightplates €20 startup cost then €5 per 20kg
The squat rack is the highest expense but they are just really expensive where I live.
I had a rogue sml 1 with a rogue bench rogue 45lb plates and a cap barbell and some dumbbells before the virus hit thank god. Definitely consider Titan Fitness products, even at the higher price points.

I agree, super happy with my Titan fitness rack which was under $500. I feel like there is no need for me to upgrade down the road.

Oh my god ... This same list of stuff is like five times the price now as they are in the video. Holy hell.

The only caution I would make is that bench. 41” is too short. I have a 41” bench at work and hate it. You need at least 46-47” length. Even in the video it shows the guy being dragged behind the car and you will notice the bench is not long enough to rest his head on.
My $500 gym consists of two dumbbells and a bench. Oh have things changed.
