me looking at all the "cheap" $500 home gym videos while sitting in my $40 home gym. i can do squats, bench, incline, pullups, and any other barbell/dumbell exercises. btw that entire $40 was for an ez bar. my barbell is a 1'' steel bar and all my weights were free from family members and scrapyards. and my bench and squat setup is entirly wood because i built it.
I really like the emphasis on the spotter arms. Absolutely the scariest thing ever to fail lifting back to the rack and have to struggle to get the weight off the chest. Will not go to failure alone without spotter arms ever again.
Jason Genova it’s kind of bull as long as you don’t lift crazy heavy. As long as you lift what you k ow you can and you’re careful and know the roll of shame you should be fine
I have the Fitness Reality Power Rack and I'm very satisfied with it. The unexpected bonus of this rack is the holes on the pull-up bar which I use to put a carabiner for the DIY cable pulley setup I installed thanks to Garage Gym Review's other video. Note that if you're over 6' tall, this rack might be on the short side for you.
I had a rogue sml 1 with a rogue bench rogue 45lb plates and a cap barbell and some dumbbells before the virus hit thank god. Since then I’ve purchased ez bar curl, preacher curl machine, sissy squat, Leg machine, adjustable bench, 55lb rubber plates, Lat pull down machine, gym flooring/ paint for garage a speaker got a pull up bar. Found 13 feet of free mirrors that I hanged up, made a crossmember/ pulley/cable crossover with my sml-1. Made a weight tree knowing that when it’s over I still will go to a commercial gym.
If you insist on benching alone without spotter arms, just don't put collars on. This way you can lean one way or another and dump the weights off the bar.
Hey Coop, this is pretty much my home gym. Only difference is I went with The Boss barbell since a lot of people reported The Beast splintering metal. I ended up ditching the Amazon Basics bench - it was not very stable. I picked up a bench from Rep Fitness on Black Friday.

Don't we all? The ads I get when I have a lapse in judgment and use normal browsing are unbearable lmao I'll look up specs on a rack or bar on google and I'll get bombarded with gym equipment ads for the next few weeks
Got to haunt the thrift stores regularly man! Many years ago I got 385 pounds of standard cast iron plates ranging from 20 lbs down to 1 1/4 lbs sizes with three standard straight 25lb bars and two sets of dumbbell bars all complete with all their collars to put the plates on for $30 for the collection. They were all rusty and dirty. They cleaned up like new with a wire brush, some spray primer and paint. Have since painted them again after 35years out on my back porch. Got a Sears or JC Penny bench with incline capability, leg attachment and squat rack back in the mid 1980s to go with those free weights, not sure what I paid for that...maybe a couple hundred bucks tops. It was new at the time. Bent curl bar was about $10, and a few years ago I picked up a complete Total Gym 1000 (a very base model but still great) in virtually perfect condition with all its attachments AND the book and poster for $25. Can't beat that with a stick! A pile of pairs of small 1lb to 15lb cast iron dumbbells and 4 sizes of kettlebells from the local second hand sporting goods store for maybe a $1 a pound rounds it out. Got a used magnetic resistance trainer stand for my bicycle off ebay for about $17 so I can ride indoors in bad weather. Got a 75Lb canvas heavy bag for about $30, cover was old and shredded, bought a couple yards of canvas and some seat belt material at the fabric store and sewed a new cover myself. Welded up my own Thor's hammer dumbbell bar with collar out of some scrap in my welding pile. Glorious for forearms. Getting ready to weld up a stand for the heavy bag, new house doesn't have a porch to hang it from... And some new racks for all the weights and bars. Scrap steel goes for about $1.89/lb around here. Yard sales are good too!! And moving sales! Got a monster big multi stack home gym station one time for FREE for helping a friend move. He had to move in a hurry and didn't want it anymore. Was probably about a $1200 unit new back in its day. Used it for a couple years off and on, but it was a little too big for me (I'm a 5'4" woman and a lot of the equipment out there just has too wide a stance or reach for my size) and ended up giving it away to a friend. He used it for a few months and dropped 50lbs right away! You would be amazed what you can get second hand for dirt cheap. Some people will just give you stuff if you can haul it away for them. And then I got a nice recumbent bike free a few years ago for my 15year service gift from the company I was working for. That was a definite upgrade from the little lapel pin I got for my 3 year gift... Now, if I would just get off my posterior, uncover the pile of stuff in my workshop and actually start using it all again... :/
Gym in the thumbnail isn't going to be too much more. Probably $1,200 ($600 for dumbbells, $300 for plate loaded lat pulldown, $300 for bench, barbell and some plates). There isn't a squat rack though so add that in and you'd be around $1,500.
@@boxlad7583 for something halfway decent, yes. But for a budget option, you can (probably not right now) find a bar cheap beater bar and 200 lbs-ish of plates for $300 or less.

Plus various sized dumb bells. Around $1000 but I can do everything I was doing at the gym. I get excellent work outs and I save on gas, avoid waiting to use equipment, plus I can feel great about the less exposure to germs and assholes at the gym 🤣
I train (weighted) calisthenics + squats this is what I bought over the years: 1. Pullup Bar €50 2. Dip Bar €50 3. Weighted vest €50 4. Squat rack €250 5. Barbell €150 6. 2x 10kg adjustable dumbells €30 7. Home made concrete weightplates €20 startup cost then €5 per 20kg The squat rack is the highest expense but they are just really expensive where I live.
Couple years ago I ended up buying a $60 CAP 6' Oly bar from Walmart, and at a local fitness shop a squat stand for about $150 and a good bench for around $250. Plates came out to be about $1.20 per lb on average, I think. I did pretty well considering I didn't know what I was looking for when I started shopping.
I'm still rocking my Weider Club 500 gym that I bought at Sams Club 20 years ago. I think I paid like $300-$400...still working great and does many exercises.
Great overview despite glitchy video. Can’t wait for your video on $1,000 range. Finally clearing out my garage. I am thinking of putting in home gym for me & the family. Also subbed ❤️🤘
Thanks for taking the time to put together this list. None of the items are currently available and resellers are doubling their prices. Can't wait for this pandemic to be over.
Great video!! I like how you walked us through how/where to get them on Amazon/Walmart, etc. Plus, while you're pointing out and choosing the equipment that's for 'this' project, you point out stuff that's a step up. And the quick shot of you doing chest w the dumbbells while the bench was rolling was pretty funny. I like that (it seems) you make it a point to be a real student of this area. Nice work... 👍👍
Just bought my home gym stuff last week, didn't look at this video beforehand but I'm glad to say I bought the rack you recommend here. I spent a little extra to get a Texas Power Bar. Still have to get my bench but I need an adjustable for incline press and I'm gonna be building my own platform in the next few days. Man they are EXPENSIVE to buy ready made. Probably just buy the cheapest bumper plates I can find, or near to it. 300 lbs is 300 lbs whether it's Rogue or Cap. Might get some regular iron plates from York just to be hardcore, if I think my platform work is good.
Don't know why he would suggest a flat bench instead of a incline. (Other than cost) Incline bench is a lot more versatile especially if you have limited space
I got the fitness reality cage with pulldown and 3-45s on each side on plate holders. Also on a wood platform. Maybe a little side-to-side movement when rocking it but no wobbling. Solid during actual use
I have the CAP barbell power rack. It’s a little shaky but perfect for us mere mortals that don’t try to squat the house. Gill spots me when I bench so no worries there.
I want at least 6 45 Olympic plates and even choosing the cheapest plates, them alone are already $450. So the idealistic range is really around 800-1000.
I’m sure this gets said a lot but really I am surprised about your subscriber count given the quality and VARIETY of your content and the superb editing.
I switched from the gym to home workouts about 3 years ago. I feel for those who have no workout equipment at home during this time. The prices are so much higher now if you can even get it. It was a good switch for me time wise.
Suggestion/Tip for a free or nearly free bench: My husband works out daily, but since his recent quartentine furlough, he has been trying to get creative about working out at home. He already has dumbells and cords however, we don't have a bench so, he took two coolers that we already had and put them together. Next, we took a foam eggshell mattress that we weren't using and cut the foam to size. It comes out looking like a single bed. Next is to cover the foam. If your wife/G.F. can sew, have her make you a cover for the foam with inexpensive fabric. Otherwise, purchase a single mattress sheet. You want to make sure it's single size, not twin size. It really is comfy enough until you can afford a bench.
These racks and benches are good if your not planing on lifting real weights tbh... If your a big guy that already weighs almost 300lbs or more... what do you wanna bench or squat?
I dont really have enough money for most of this, I'm planning to make cement plates with a bar from a building site and build the rack out of scrap wood
I'm poor & been seeking out to do an affordable home gym like this. Too, maybe if I start out with a $500 dollar home gym like this, build up my views & subscribers maybe RUclips will start paying me so I can afford a home gym more like yours. I have nothing & dream of bettering myself. Thanks for this👍
Honestly, if you're on a budget, 1 inch bar. 1 inch plates are much cheaper(brand new is usually about 1/2 the price) and you can still do plenty with them, you could get a lot more weight for the price. I can easily throw 100lbs on a decent dumbbell and about 150-200+ on a good barbell which is plenty for most people, especially on a budget. Just my 2 cents on the matter, I personally struggle with the idea of going up to 2 inch plates because they cost so much more

I really like the emphasis on the spotter arms. Absolutely the scariest thing ever to fail lifting back to the rack and have to struggle to get the weight off the chest. Will not go to failure alone without spotter arms ever again.

got clickbaited by the thumbnail, good job
Gym in the thumbnail isn't going to be too much more. Probably $1,200 ($600 for dumbbells, $300 for plate loaded lat pulldown, $300 for bench, barbell and some plates). There isn't a squat rack though so add that in and you'd be around $1,500.

@@boxlad7583 for something halfway decent, yes. But for a budget option, you can (probably not right now) find a bar cheap beater bar and 200 lbs-ish of plates for $300 or less.

@@Pler1978 It can be done, if you're patient. I found a power rack with a lat pulldown attachment, Olympic bar, full set of weights, and a bunch of accessories on CL -- all for $250. 6. 2x 10kg adjustable dumbells €30

You're welcome
Oh my god ... This same list of stuff is like five times the price now as they are in the video. Holy hell.
You could do that. The main reason I go to a gym is it gets my literally out of my own comfort zone to grow. Then I can get a grip around improving.
You really putting the Amazon driver to work
I got the fitness reality cage with pulldown and 3-45s on each side on plate holders.

And
These racks and benches are good if your not planing on lifting real weights tbh...
If your a big guy that already weighs almost 300lbs or more... what do you wanna bench or squat?
YES!! Do more of these for different budgets! Go into flooring, storage, and maybe even some heating and ac options as well🤷🏻♂️
