An extra wet, wet, wet reaction ☔⛈🌦🌧🚿! I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to The Dramatics before: What You See Is What You Get. In The Rain was released as the third single from The Dramatics 1971 debut album: Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get. It was written by Tony Hester and was produced by Don Davis. The song reached #1 on the R&B charts and #5 on the Hot 100. William "Wee Gee" Howard is the lead singer on this song. It sold over one million copies and is the group's biggest hit. Billboard ranked it as the No. 53 song for 1972. Keith Sweat covered this song on his 1987 debut album: Make It Last Forever. Xscape recorded this song for the 1997 film: Love Jones, starring Nia Long and Larenz Tate.
The backing band includes bassist Michael Henderson, who often worked with Miles Davis in the 1970s, and three of Motown's Funk Brothers: pianist Johnny Griffith, guitarist Dennis Coffey and drummer Uriel Jones. The track is also notable for its stormy sound effects, which lead into Dennis Coffey's guitar intro. Dennis Coffey used an Echoplex effect unit to get the delay.
The song's lyrics state that, because of a broken love relationship, the singer wants to go out and stand in the rain so that no one can see him cry:
"Once the rain starts falling on my face,
You won't see a single trace,
    Of the tears I'm crying,
    Because of you I'm crying.
Don't want you to see me cry.
Let me go, Let me go
    Let me go!"
Funny you mention the Temptations as this band didn't want to sound like them and set out to cultivate their own musical sound. Berry Gordy had a lock on Detroit-based music with his legendary Motown Records, and any harmonizing soul singers coming up in the city were bound to be compared to the label's Temptations. The group's music producer Don Davis knew this and worked hard to cultivate a distinct sound for the group, who were signed to the rival soul label Stax/Volt. Part of the plan was emphasizing the tenor voices of Ron Banks and especially William "Wee Gee" Howard, whose vocals had an uncanny similarity to Temptations lead singer David Ruffin. "We were trying to get Wee Gee to sound more and more like himself, rather than like David Ruffin", Don Davis explained. "On the very first record he made with us: 'Your Love Was Strange', he came off sounding so much like David Ruffin that we said, 'We've got to get away from that', and get a lot of that tenor sound into this thing and set the mood for the group".
The song has been sampled by many artists including: Wu Tang Clan, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Jadakiss, Deniece Williams, Jaheim, The Alchemist, AZ, Madvillian, Jesse Powell, Special Ed, Jay Z, Playa, KRS ONE, Hieroglyphics and many more.
    The Dramatics Info 📰:
The Dramatics are a Soul/R&B singing group formed in 1964 in Detroit, Michigan. They are best known for their 1970s hit songs: "In The Rain" and "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", both of which were Top 10 Pop hits, as well as their later 1993 song collaboration: "Doggy Dogg World", with Snoop Dogg.
The Dramatics, were founded in 1964 by Ron Banks (May 10, 1951 - March 4, 2010), Larry Demps, Roderick Davis, Elbert Wilkins and Larry Reed. They were originally known as "The Sensations", but changed their billing to "The Dramatics" in 1965. Their first single release in 1965: "Bingo", was recorded for Wingate records, a division of Golden World Records in Detroit, Michigan. By 1967, Motown Records had absorbed the entire Golden World Records operation. The Dramatics then moved to another local Detroit record label: Sport Records, where they garnered their first minor hit single: "All Because Of You". After two group members and the group's valet were involved in the July 1967 Algiers Motel incident (aka Algiers Motel Murders) in which the group's valet: Fred Temple, was killed by the police, while both Larry Reed and Roderick Davis would eventually leave the group, and were replaced by William "Wee Gee" Howard and Willie Ford (July 10, 1950 - May 28, 2019) in 1969.
The Dramatics signed with Stax Records of Memphis, Tennessee in 1968, but moved on after one unsuccessful release, the 1969 Temptations-inspired tune: "Your Love Was Strange", which got regional airplay, but never charted nationally. However, producer Don Davis re-signed them to Volt records, a Stax subsidiary, in 1971 after the group teamed up with Detroit writer-producer, Tony Hester. They broke through with their first release recorded with Tony Hester: "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", which Tony Hester offered them after seeing the group perform in a Detroit nightclub. The song went into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 9 and climbing to number 3 in the R&B chart. "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" was awarded gold disc status by the R.I.A.A. in December 1971.
The group members at this time were: Ron Banks, William "Wee Gee" Howard, Elbert Wilkins, Willie Ford, and Larry Demps. These five members are often thought of as the original members of The Dramatics, though it is more accurate to call them "The Classic Five", as only Ron Banks, Larry Demps and Elbert Wilkins were part of the original group line-up. This quartet are the five singers that the general public first got to know as The Dramatics.
Shortly after the success of their first album, William "Wee Gee" Howard and Elbert Wilkins left the group, and formed their own version of The Dramatics, recording the single: "No Rebate On Love", on Mainstream Records. They were replaced by Larry James "L.J." Reynolds and Leonard "Lenny" Mayes (who died of lung cancer on November 8, 2004, at the age of 53). At the urging of Don Davis and Stax Records, the original group changed its billing to "Ron Banks And The Dramatics". These two groups toured the concert circuit for four years before Ron Banks' group won a court battle, when they bought out William "Wee Gee" Howard and Elbert Wilkins and gained full access to the group's name. William "Wee Gee" Howard and Elbert Wilkins were forced to change the name of their group to "A Dramatic Experience". Ron Banks, Larry Demps and Willie Ford then had the trademark rights to the name, and then extended that right to Leonard "Lenny" Mayes and Larry James "LJ" Reynolds.
Through the 1970s, the group continued to have successful songs, including the Top 10 Pop, number 1 R&B hit: "In The Rain" in 1972, "Hey You! Get Off My Mountain" (number 5 R&B) in 1973, "Me And Mrs Jones" (number 4 R&B) in 1975, originally recorded by Billy Paul three years earlier, "Be My Girl" (number 3 R&B) in 1976, and "Shake It Well" (number 4 R&B) in 1977. "In the Rain" also reached number 5 on the Hot 100 pop chart and was their second million-seller.
The group recorded for both Don Davis' Groovesville and later Great Lakes music production companies during the 1970s, although the group's recordings appeared on several different record labels. The group moved from Volt Records in 1974 after three albums: Whatcha See Is What You Get (1971), A Dramatic Experience (1973) and Dramatically Yours (1974). They also featured on the album: The Dells vs The Dramatics, on Chess Records' subsidiary Cadet Records, together withThe Dells, who were also being produced by Don Davis at the time. The group then signed for ABC records in 1975 and transferred five years later to MCA Records, after ABC Records closed following its buy-out by MCA Records. Many of The Dramatics' songs initially were written and produced by Tony Hester, including all the tracks on the first two Volt Records albums. Don Davis, then Ron Banks and Larry James "LJ" Reynolds took over production later in the 1970s and the early 1980s.
In 1982, the group moved to Capitol Records and made their first album without Don Davis, with Ron Banks acting as producer. Only Ron Banks, Willie Ford and Leonard " Lenny" Mayes remained in the group. Larry James "LJ" Reynolds left to go solo in 1981 and Larry Demps decided to go into teaching and spend more time with his family, after having joined the group's original line-up in 1964 with Ron Banks. When Ron Banks also decided to try a solo career, the group disbanded for a few years, but re-formed in the mid-1980s, with William "Wee Gee" Howard returning to join Larry James "LJ" Reynolds, Leonard " Lenny" Mayes, Willie Ford and Ron Banks to record for Fantasy Records.

From 2012 there were two groups of The Dramatics. One group was led by Larry James "LJ" Reynolds, with Winzell Kelly, Leon Franklin, Donald Albert and Levell Thompson. The other group was led by the original member of The Dramatics, Willie Ford, with Rick Littleton, Michael Brock, Douglas Gaddy and Gregory Finley, in 2017 long time member Paul Hill, of funk legend George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic band joined Willie Ford's Dramatics. The Dramatics Featuring Willie Ford focused on staying true to The Dramatics' original and easily recognizable concept of five part harmonies and five dynamic lead voices in the group, at their shows until his passing at 68 years old on May 28, 2019. Larry James "LJ" Reynolds' Dramatics featured the singing-talents of Larry James "LJ" Reynolds and also included music from his solo career at their shows. On September 24, 2018 Larry James "LJ" Reynolds legally took the trademark rights to the name The Dramatics.
In 2006, The Dramatics were honored by the City of Detroit when a street was named after them in the Woodbridge Estates neighborhood. Two years later in 2008, the group received the Lifetime Achievement Award” at the Soul Tracks Readers’ Choice Awards. In 2013, they were inducted into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame and the R&B Music Hall of Fame at Cleveland State University.
The Dramatics are depicted centrally in the 2017 film: Detroit, a dramatization of the Algiers Motel incident.
In 2017, TV One produced an Unsung episode on The Dramatics.
The Dramatics still perform their music live on stage in 2023 with a group lineup consisting of: Larry James "LJ" Reynolds, Winzell Kelly, Leon Franklin, Donald Albert, Levell Thompson and Ricky Littleton.
