  • Independent review of a Provia Storm Door. Door in the video is a special order Deluxe brand. DIY storm door choice is limited in my area to the two big box home product retailers. At this time Home Depot sells Anderson & Emco - they are the same company. Lowes Sells Larson and Pella. Larson makes Pella storm doors. I looked at both stores and was not pleased with my choice. I had read about Provia and two of my neighbors have these doors which were installed by door & window companies.
    After looking at the Provia website, I was excited about all of the colors and options available. I knew from looking at my neighbor's Provia doors that they were good quality. I found a door & window company selling them on line, but thought the price was awfully high. I tried to buy one of the doors from a local door & window company who is a Provia dealer. They refused to sell me a door without installing it. Persistence paid off for me, I found a local supply house that sold me a Provia door and delivered it to my home at a reasonable price.

    I have some other videos about storm doors, how to measure for one, install a wind chain and how to install the handle & latch on this door. Here's the link: ruclips.net/p/PLvce66kQTjJTaB2l8hDVhnCqwJFcUb1KM

      Thanks for finding a way to comment and for watching the videos. I really like the Provia door. I think it was a way better choice than a door from one of the big box stores.

    Work for a dealer that installs these doors, the screw covers are able to be removed without destroying them. The sash clips are plastic, metal would be nice, but have had very few over the years needing replacement. Looks like a solid install!

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  Год назад

      Thanks for the compliment on the install, Ethan. It was my first storm door install. I spent a lot of time planning and thinking about installing it. No one would want to pay me by the hour. Lol. I installed a garage door a few years ago (it's working great) so I thought I could get the storm door installed properly. I get a lot of compliments on the quality of the storm door. Provia has a video that shows removing the screw covers with a drill/twisting them out of the channel. How do you get them out without destroying them?

      @@Know-How-Now I use a sharp chisel to get between the cover and the Z bar, a slight twist will start to pop it out, just need to work your way up and be patient with it because if you try to pry to hard you can dent the metal up. When done there are sometimes nicks in the paint, but they are usually pretty small and easily covered. Definitely don't recommend talking them off unless absolutely necessary 😬

      Maybe auto body trade has a plastic pry bar to get them off without damaging the paint. I left the covers off for a few days as insurance if I made an error. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

    We just had this exact door installed today. I was disappointed that the glass has to be removed before I can utilize the screen. I live in the Midwest where we get all 4 seasons in the same day, sometimes. lol So its not practical to remove the glass.

      There are doors that have roll up screens. I'm surprised you didn't choose one of the Provia models that have that option instead of one with glass/screen that you have to remove.

  • @tonalharmony9266
    @tonalharmony9266 Год назад +1

    Nice presentation. More details about the screen would be helpful. Since you didn't choose the self-storing screen that rolls up into the door, do you change out the screen and store it and/or the glass outside the door depending upon the season?

      @Know-How-Now  Год назад

      Fall has arrived here in southeastern PA. I've installed the glass and stored the screen. There are 4 options for the screen on this door. 2 colors of fiberglass screen (my experience is that if the door/window gets a lot of sun you will be replacing it around 5 years.), aluminum screen (my choice) and a heavy duty screen. The heavy duty screen would be great for pets with sharp nails. I've seen it on a display model at a local door company. The screen is quite thick.... not something you would want unless your pet is constantly damaging it. IMHO, the roll up screens are convenient until they break. When I priced the storm door at Home Depot, it had a roll up screen. I asked if they were repairable. If I remember correctly, the entire mechanism had to be purchased for around $50-$60. I saw myself having to buy a present for the door every 5 years (I presume the screen is fiberglass) and having a maintenance project. Here is a link to Provia's design a door. You can get an idea of all of the options available for each style door.... there are so many to choose from. The new door has been up for a few weeks... I am still very pleased with it. www.provia.com/design-center/#envision-sec

      @@Know-How-Now Thank you very much for taking the time to reply, and for the Provia link! We visited Lowes, Home Depot, and Menards and were deflated with the fit and finish of current Larson and Anderson/Emco offerings, as well as the screen quality on 3/4 view doors, usually without any option to upgrade to a different screen. Our 30-year old, soon-to-be-retired Larson storm door (3/4 view, 30" x 80", at our side entrance) has a full and sturdy steel screen that we have left in place year round, with two moveable/sliding glass panels that allow for either top or bottom ventilation. In comparing your door with the Provia Deluxe models in their literature, it looks like you got their "398 Hi-Lite (Includes top screen)" where you remove the glass in order to utilize the screen(?). Would their Deluxe models that say "Self Storing (Includes full screen)" likely have the sliding glass panels like I described in our old Larson door?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  Год назад +1

      You are correct I did get the 398 Hi-Lite. As I am not a dealer/installer of Provia, I am not confident that I can answer your question about the self storing screen/sliding panel question. You might try going to the Provia website, locating a dealer in your area who likely has a showroom and can answer detailed questions of available options. It took a lot of time for me to figure out the options/door that worked for me. If you are installing it yourself, you might have a hard time finding someone who will sell you the door. I was lucky to have a building supply house that would sell to the public. If you have a favorite contractor, they may charge you less to install than one of the Provia door/window company/dealers. I have two neighbors who have these doors. I checked them out and I think they are good quality too. Here's a link to the Provia page to search for a dealer/retailer in your area: www.provia.com/where-to-buy/

      I've never tried that. I think you can buy new laminate and glue it on, though you may not be able to remove the old without damage. I've never tried that either.

      Maybe you have a different door. When I ordered my door I had to choose left handed or right handed. I believe some doors can be hung either way, though not this particular door. You might look for a tag on the door for the make and model.

      We will get about a 1/2 inch of much needed rain from Ian. I live too far inland to get any destructive winds though sometimes we do get a lot of rain from hurricanes/tropical storms. The rain from Agnes in 1970 was devastating in some areas of Pennsylvania. Agnes triggered the building of some levies and other flood control. So far those projects have prevented another Agnes situation.
