The Philosophy of Existential Despair

- Опубликовано: 13 июл 2024
- The Russian existentialist philosopher Lev Shestov is known for his “philosophy of despair” or “philosophy of tragedy”. For Shestov, the sources of philosophy were the human tragedy, the horrors and sufferings of human life and the sense of hopelessness.
Tragedies take place in the depth of the human soul, where no eye can reach out to see. Consequently, He saw the beginning of philosophy starting not with knowledge, not with wonder, but with despair.
Despair is what he considers a “penultimate knowledge”, that is, a preliminary step that we must acknowledge, in order to progress towards something higher, the “ultimate knowledge”.

ah i see! thank you so much!
Unfortunately, tragedy really is one of the only things that makes you look at things with the fondness you should've felt more of in the first place.
There is no lie here.
Spot on 😂
Your truth is buried in dubious phrasing. Improve the way you’ve expressed this thought because the sanctity of it demands that from you.
I'm not a very good english speaker but, God how I love your channel. I stopped to consider that is an island and the sea of madness, thanks for your content, thanks for philosophy.
You spoke fine English my firned
Well, this little sample of yours is flawless. And if you enjoy this channel, it proves that you have an excellent grasp of advanced conversation and high concepts. Give yourself a pat on the back, my friend!
The vast majority of English speakers can't write, spell, or even think as effectively as your post suggests.
"The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time." - Jack London.
To merely exist, is misery. To live life, on the other hand, is lovely! ❤️🔥💯🤔🌹
A life affirming hell yeah to everyday
Live how? Being held down by a shitty retail job limits us
Hm I heard this one in the new James Bond movie. Thanks for the reminder!

I was angry. Searched the word despair. Saw some videos, still felt angry. I thought this video was going to be the same. But it had 3 things that made me feel better.
1. Soothing voice
2. Relaxing music
3. Ability to make me daydream of the past because i remembered the feeling of reading some of the works of these writers.
If i was in a room with my younger and older selfs, i wonder what present me would learn.
I searched philosophy of death. After I typed the d and e despair appeared in the search
I understand this, and I observe people running everywhere for little things which don't really make difference when it comes to death...and life....
I am detatched from all this or at least I try to but then again I'm brought back.......
Somehow, I know
this is about to feel personal.
Exactly like a message of god from or something
Looool :)))) u re the guy from the Thumbnail 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yo bro u in this vid??
Did not expect this to be so good, well done 👏
Despair is the spectre of our time and I think most people who live modern lives live in despair.
Well said.
Your videos have been a great tool to help me fall asleep for the past month or so. Your voice has the perfect tone for this. Of course also the philosophical content is impressive. Thanka
Thanks!
One of the best things that happen was i accidentally found your channel, thank you so much on this quality work.
Thank you so much for introducing me to Lev Shestov. I'll have to check him out.
Thank 🎁 You!
This is so well structured that could easily be translated into a movie script
The ending is superb
This channel deserves way more views. Keep up the great videos.🙏
Excellent, as always. Be proud of your art
I don't think Kant said anything like "religion is within the limits of reason alone." His first critique's aimed, among many other things, to detail the limits of reason (he even says something like "bring reason to trial") and to "make room for faith"
Kansas view on religion was exactly the opposite, that God was utterly unknowable and unprovoked by human reason. That's basic to Kantian thought.

I loved all your videos , they all are really amazing I have got many things to learn. Keep on making these videos . Commendable job👌👌👌
I love this channel so much, thank you for all that you do.
So great, thanks a lot for all your efforts!
I was thinking so many things as you explore with this video, recently I´m writing and trying to find the courage to start my own channel. You are one of my biggest sources of inspiration. Thank you
Thank you!
This is deeply beautiful!
Very good as always
Just excellent thank you. Dostoevsky, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche are three I read consistently. I did not realize that Shestov was the first to link the three. I had heard an old lecture of Walter Kaufmann linking them as all existentialists, but that was probably in the 50s - 60s. I am eager to explore Shestov! I read that towards the end of his life Dostoevsky spent time with Solovyof. He is on my list as well.
Great Video! Love it!
Plz make videos on Bertarnd Russel.
Having meaning and fulfilment in your life can bring great happiness.
Thank you
Thank you for this sublime video. "The nightmare of Godlessness and unbelief". What a beautiful and tragic way to describe the plight of many modern people. Also brings to mind Goya's famous sketch "El sueño de la razon produce monstruos".
really enjoyed this piece. thank you.
could you name the artworks that you used? interested in learning more about them.
the ultimate tragedy of my existence is that I cannot get away from this sort of thing. I am obsessed with being 'awake'; and I am sickened by it, and long to sleep..., and cannot.., and so forth and so on.....,
Great videos..thankyou.
Sometimes we must surrender the higher for the practical, to be lost in thought that is of no use is just as bad as being ignorant
Why must you surrender either of these though? Plenty of historical pioneers have contemplated both.
This video is great and got me into philosophy .
Thanks, I did enjoy!
This has to be the 6th video from you lately I've watched, so I subscribed lol
Thank you for your know🍎
Just perfect truths for NOW thank you xxx
Thank you.
this was great, thank you so much for this vid. really enjoy the concept here but id love to listen to them as well when i cant watch, are you on audea? was trying to find some of your content on there to listen to!
Amazing...
Man’s despair is god’s opportunity because man cannot survive without a ray of hope.
It is out of das deepest depth that das highest must come to his height

Good stuff 🧠
Just beautiful made me shed a tear .. really opened my soul up thank u
we despair at the thought that we might one day disappear
I appreciate this and your channel :) I recently was looking into Spinoza and was feeling completely faulted as a rationalist- yes it’s logical and makes sense but it isnt ‘who’ we all can be and while it claims to encompass all of nature - we are human and subject to other humans who can’t account for logically causally all the time
Always do what you are afraid to do.
Thank you 🙏

I really enjoy your explanations about these different aspects of reality and the point of view from the writers. Tell me, where do you get the pictures from? The illustrations are great!
Existentialism, fear of death and recoginzing suffering and despeair as fundamental components of life, is just begining of life itslef..
Who said that?
I like overcoming the fear of death.
@@mikeoglen6848 i'm not aweare of anybody that put it that way,i'm sure that somebody did in one way or another, but i was writing what came to my mind at the moment..

Could you do one on the psychology of Accelerationism with emphasis on the early writings of nick land
You only value something after you become aware of that losing that something is a possibility, same goes for anything in existence if not existence itself.
Truly great video
Thank you for sharing. I enjoy your videos very much. 🙂👍

My philosophy is pretty simple the meaning of life is to live. The center of the universe is life the purpose of life is to lead the next generation into a greater and better existence experience than what was available for ourselves this is an act of selflessness and selfishness.
The Universe asks nothing of us.
What does das universe demand of me ?
You shall become what you are;
You are a spark of das infinite that is functioning through this body+mind-complex.
There’s one guy I heard referenced but I can’t find where…
He wrote a book “what is philosophy” and I can’t recall him 100%, if you know him or if you have a video of him I’d like to grab it

"The conclusion, when everything has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person."
Ecclesiastes 12:13
I wonder, if anyone even pauses to look at the philosophical aspect of life, if they have not experienced near death ☠️
I wish I'd never been born

It's a funny thing that when death comes we appreciate everything so much more. Life is a delicate thing that should never be seen as ordinary. I'm fascinated by nature and how we all survive day by day. In America with all the school shootings , there is deep profound void for meaning. The focus is on the weapon but what about the perp. I see the downfall as lack of communication within families and technology that embraces likes for popularity and lack of community as the reason for isolation. Of course there is the argument of toxic masculinity which is complete bullshit. Is the reason for mass killings because God is not in the schools? Nietzsche said once God is dead than the rest is nothing.
