The Miracles were the first Motown act to appear on National Television. (On Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, in 1961.)They opened the doors for all of the Motown acts that followed them.
I remember the first time there was a commercial with a black woman brushing her teeth. (A toothpaste commercial.) With all due respect, being black and from Philadelphia - whenever a black kid artist was on it was big news - I remember Dinah Washington, Bobby Lewis, Tossin’ and Turnin’, etc. and trust me, when Motown acts were on - we were watching. But, when Ed Sullivan came on - that was big time (Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey, Sammy Davis, Nat King Cole. Lionel Hampton, Leslie Uggams , Diahann Carroll, Harry Belafonte, Hines and Hines, tap dancing, so many more. But, when the Motown artists were on: we all would gather round: the Miracles, the Temptations, The Jackson Five, the Supremes, etc. Oh, the memories. Thank you so much.
