That's what I was looking for - someone who'd had roundwounds on a fretless and then swapped to tapewounds.
The warmth of the sound was a given, but you commented that you preferred how these felt when sliding.
Also interesting to note that you'd made the swap because you'd noticed the roundwounds chewing up the neck, something I'd heard from others as "it will" but your first-hand observation of "it did" is all the more valuable.
From my experience, I would advise that you never use roundwound strings on a fretless instrument because you will get scoring and damage to the fretboard. I've seen it first hand from that bass, which I bought second-hand, and I ended up sanding down the fretboard to remove the scoring. Always flatwounds on a fretless for the least damage to the board.
Very nice Darren -a rich warm sound-interesting
Thanks Darren.
You’re welcome! 👍
Sound really nice, maybe try some on your fender p bass
i just bought these and i dont have a fretless. but its so fun to slide witht htem
Great video, I'm just wondering if those thick strings would stress the bass nut, thinking to install a 5 string set 065-135 on my fender j bass that used to handle 045-125, any clue about this issue? thanks
I suppose it could happen. But then it’s only a ten minute job to replace a nut…maybe a brass one would be ideal?
Looking to get these for Epiphone Viola bass. Really hope the medium scale will fit
I think you can get them in short scale.
Great strings mate used for 20 years, my bass has richlite fretboard, I took off factory strings immediately as metal will goge even ebony or richlite. Can't plus slap bass with them. But if your looking for double bass sound on electric fretless bass way to go
They certainly give a new dimension to your bass sound! 👍
I ordered a set to try on a squier 50's p bass.
Let me know how you get on!
How did you find them on this particular bass?
i have this Bass today.. your Vids are great.. from pink floyd to Bass stuff.. We Are Matching.. i need a swissy tho
Well I am very glad that you enjoy my stuff!
They strings always had a dark smooth sound, especially when played with nails, with a classical guitar technique. I wish to ask you a question What gauges of the Rotosound , wrapped in black nylon, should be used on strings one through six - on a six string bass ? Also, what is the LIGHTEST gauge string they make for the first string ? Thank you very much for your help. :) Antoine
