Ponderosa Pine Floor Comes to Life! Off Grid Cabin Build, Ep 42.

- This is quite possibly the best lacquering video you'll see all year! Seriously though, if you enjoy watching already-beautiful wood POP with color and character, then this eye-candy-filled video is made for you.
The floor in the off grid Spur Cabin is milled from ponderosa pine, harvested off of Red Moose Ranch several years after being burned by a wildfire. Finishing this floor is icing on the cake.
Before I dive right into the good stuff, ride along as I install a pipe "hanger" on the wall, for the loft ladder when not in use. I also have to finish screwing the wide pine plank flooring, and finally, plane down one spot on one particular board.
This build series is nearly finished. After this video, just one more next week before this cabin is DONE! And then on to a whole new build series: the outdoor kitchen. The Spur Kitchen Build? Hmmm... I'll accept suggestions!
Oh, and if you haven't already, tell a friend or family member just how spectacular this channel is. Ok...maybe that it's just above average. And ask them nicely to subscribe! That'd be great.
I appreciate you watching @LifeontheMoose!

lacquer comes from various tree resins and waxes. usually suspended in distilled alcohol. shellac is a resin from the lac beetle. given how punky and holy some of those boards are, I'd definitely put another coat or two. since your boots and feet will wear that down really quickly.
Good info! And I may add another coat sooner than later. That wood sucked it up quickly.
Now that is a fine cabin anyone would be proud of...including me for all the help I provided. Ha ha. I literally died laughing at myself.
Good one 😂
Ha that’s good!
Always a pleasure to watch your videos! Looking forward to the kitchen build next. 😁
Hey thanks so much!
Hi Patrick, good to be back on the job site with you again. The lacquered floor really looks fantastic, it ties the whole interior together !
Another good video and a job well done.
I’ve been watching the cabin build from the very start…what a ride!! My hats off to you Patrick for all the hard work you put in on the cabin… especially the roof.
See you next week my friend, back on the job site 👍👌👍
Take care of yourself Patrick!
Well thank you so much! Glad you were along for the crazy ride. Almost there..
The lacquer really brought out the character in the flooring!
Did it ever!
When you grabbed the broom I thought you were going to sweep me off my feet. Your work literally indicates that no matter how good you are there is always room to brush up a bit. You also floored me with your facts on lacquer...well at least I wasn't board.
I've been watching even before the footings went in and am looking forward to all that is yet to come. God bless.
That was pretty good, excellent choice of words 👍🏻
Ha thank you! My first priority: don’t bore the viewer! 🙏
Hey Patrick, who would have guessed that watching you lacquer the floor would be so engrossing. Love the scenic shots, spring is beautiful on moose ranch.
Not me! lol. I appreciate you watching.
My back is literally sore as I watch you work on the floor and I on my new wooden garden beds. I could use an exo-skeleton at times.
Ha indeed! Nice work on those garden beds.
Wowza!! That is a beautiful floor my friend!!!
Isn’t it?! I can’t take the credit tho…all I did was move a brush around. As you know, it’s very rewarding to take an old dead tree and turn it into something useful and appealing. 🙏
My daughter is getting her first tooth, and the cabin floor is getting its first floor coat…what a day!
Hey congrats! The tooth fairy will be paying for that tooth before you know it. 🙏
Couple more weeks and we can build a picanik table … oooohhhh. Boo-boo I’m excited !!!
lol. Sounds like you can bearly wait!
What a beautiful getaway place!!
Thanks! 🙏
Patrick, this old cowboy has been with y😂ou since the very begining,& I always look forward to your interesting videos & commontary. I will also continue to be a subscriber to your channel. Sincerely, your friend, the old Montana cowboy,
Frank Scherping😊
Ah that means the world to me. Thank you, Frank! 🙏
I started late but have caught up now. I’ve seen every episode. Love it. Looking forward to seeing the cabin used and also the kitchen build. Cheers from Oklahoma.
Hey thank you! Glad you’re here.
Cheers!
According to Wikipedia, lacquer is most often made from resin extracted from trees (like Toxicodendron vernicifluum and its relatives) and waxes and has been in use since antiquity.
Thank you! Antiquity is a long time ago..
Sorry I forgot a mask.
I thought you said we were gonna get liquored up.
Then I thought maybe you said something about a knackered old goat and danged if I was gonna come help after that!
Ha! A “liquored up” video sounds more interesting!
I think brushing and rolling are the better options. When I roll I'll brush it in. Those pads tend to scrub and you can end up with a lot of garbage in your lacquer when it dries in that type of environment where you didn't really vacuum or get the surface down to tack cloth clean. As you can imagine, I've messed a lot of stuff up... And I've learned though painful experience to never leave an exterior breeze in my paint or finishing environment. It always ends badly for me. I wear the right mask filter or vent for the job and just sweat.
I also considered the ‘roll the brush’ method. And you’re right about the pad. Not the best on not perfectly smooth surfaces.
I’ll have to “brush up” before helping! 😂 Really looking awesome!
Thanks!!
Nice job on the floor…….. well the whole place in fact. I’d like to be the first to stay at Red Moose Ranch Air BNB!! 😎
Hmm… 🤔 thank you!🙏
Been watching since day 1. Very enjoyable series. Tx not known for bear meat but sounds good. So glad your Homeowners Association (mule deer) hasn't filed complaints either.
Ha me too! I appreciate that. 🙏
I love those little hand planes. I've done SO much damage with them. The learning curve was very long for me.
Indeed they can cause more harm than good in short order.
Love to see you do some version of a ship rope and tar for the floor board gaps. Don't know that I'd use tar, but something like that just for the aesthetic.
Interesting..
Watched all of the episodes on the cabin with much enjoyment. Looking forward to the next step, the outside kitchen. Great job.
Much appreciated! 🙏
We love your videos! Keep up the great work!
Hey thanks so much!
Lacquer is made from trees I believe and shellac is made from lac bugs.
Ahhh. Maybe that’s what my brain was trying to decipher! 🙏
Looks good.
A+ Didn't know about that material applied to the floor- will look into it; Thanks
🙏
Amazing job
Another great episode, love the pipe holder setup for the ladder. The cabin is amazing
Ah thank you! 🙏
The floor looks great !!!
I like it, too! 🙏
Cool 😎
Been with ya from the beginning, nice work
Thank you! That means a lot. 🙏
Wow that floor looks amazing!
Really livened it up, didn’t it!
Been here since you started 👍
Wow fantastic! 🙏
looks great my friend
Thank you!🙏
Looks very nice love it
🙏
I think I started watching 7 months ago with the episode entitled, "Sheathing". Been hooked ever since.
Ah fantastic! 🙏
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
That floor so nice once you varnish it. So beautiful
Not the most exciting video but maybe next week we can sit down and watch the paint dry. That is always exciting ! Still one of my top five favorite channels to follow. Always relaxing and fun. Thank you for taking us along. Not sure if you will answer questions but...how big is Red Moose Ranch ? I remember you saying you are close to Canadian border. Can you say what city you are near ? If you don’t answer for security reasons, I understand. Be careful and stay safe. See you next week.
Thanks! RMR is a total of 60 acres. Spur Cabin is 20. In NE Washington.
I appreciate you watching! 🙏
Nice job. The build was very enjoyable and informative. Thanks from Hells Canyon, Frank.
Thanks, Frank from HC! 🙏
After lacquer, floor boards looks so nice! Great job! 👍
Oh, yeah! Now I'm waiting kitchen series.. 😂
Only few jobs left for cabin.. Last nail, screw or brush will be epic..
Indeed! Hard to believe it’s almost finished. 👍🏻
Hi Patric, great video, as usual. Cabin looking great. WOW, that lacquer makes that floor POP! 12.45 - "carapace" is the word you're looking for... and I've No Idea whether they still use beetles in lacquer. Oh well, back to the rest of the vid... Greetings from Perth, West Australia. Cheers, Frank.
I appreciate that, Frank from Perth! 🙏
I haven’t been watching since the beginning but over several days I’ve been binge watching and I’m hooked!
I can think of worse things to be hooked on! I appreciate you being here…never too late!🙏
1,53, I believe I see something pointy in the background (unless it's just Allen). :) I'm closing in on my second watching of the whole series. Looking forward to all the next steps.
Fantastic! Glad to have you along. 🙏
I started watching to see how you did the foundation because I’m looking for ideas for a storage shed/workshop and ended up watching the whole build! I love the way you build!
Hey thank you very much! I’m so glad you found me and stuck around. 🙏
Wow the floor looks amazing great job!!!!! Well you’re almost done going to miss watching working on the small cabin ❤until your next video may god bless you my friend 🙏❤️✌🏼
Aw thank you so much! God bless back!
The floors turn out GREAT! You can use a roller for the lacquer. It’s not bubbles or rough spots to worry about, it’s putting to thick of coat on with it. Can make it more opaque or white instead of transparent.
Thanks for the episodes. Looking forward to the kitchen !
Ah good to know!
Looks like you learned the... plane... truth about wood floors.....
Ha indeed!
I'm feeling a little guilty Patrick, I'm a couple of episodes behind! But you know, decent weather and long days in Maine means more production and less screen time for me. Not to worry, I'll follow your build/art work to its completion. Your cabin build is in my opinion truly a work of art, worthy of Gods art that it's surrounded by!
That’s such a nice compliment! And do t feel guilty…Thank you.🙏
Oh gee…thanks…another “participation” trophy! 😂
Right?! It didn’t feel good handing them out, either.
Is it Friday already?😂 I am sure glad you got some sanding done in this video! The Spur is looking great. The floor is amazing. Great work Patrick, and another fun and informative video.
There’s always room for sanding! 🤣 🙏
I love this channel. I like your 'down to earth' approach and your sense of humor.
Can't wait to see the kitchen build.
Hey thanks so much! 🙏
Outstanding job to say the least. I’ve been watching from episode one but I don’t recall you mentioning if you’re going to incorporate a heating system, if so what did you have in mind? See you next week!
Hey thanks for being here so long!
A portable propane Mr Heater will be the heat source…at least for now.
I had a thought since your close to wrapping up this project...do you think you could do Harvey's Cabin next? One for older folks who aren't as agile as you young whips. We don't go up ladders cause our balance and knees are bad. Need to sleep on main floor. The fewer stairs the better...and lots of big windows to set and wile away the day with coffee and nature. Just a thought maybe then you could invite Harvey to visit and stay in His Cabin
What a great idea! 🙏
Well, I've been there since the upside-down floor insulation system episde.
It's been a very interesting series. Very entertaining.
Thank you! 🙏
The lacquered floor looks beautiful. Great job. I can’t wait to see what you and Karen do with the decor.
Thanks! I know Karen has a few things in mind and a few things ready to go. Soon!
May I make a belated suggestion
Before staining floor boards; fill all the gaps between each board with Black caulking compound or black gap filler.
Fill to slightly above floor level; and after it sets, scrape off all excess with a suitable blade/scraper.
For the best finish use a floor sander or for a more rustic look use a belt sander.
Now you are ready to start your vid
Rationale
1. Fills all the gaps to prevent dust, grime and little things finding their way between the boards
2. Looks great - the subtle black stripes blend the boards together and present a uniform flat surface without the shadows caused by the gaps
Good suggestions! I appreciate you watching.
Wow!! Beautiful floor!
12:39 I had this very good female friend? Truly a friend, we never dated but we have lost touch over the years and now I lacquer. And like you, I often walk the floors, but unlike you I pine for her.
🤣👍🏻
tell you subscribers to check that subscribe button / noticed I had not seen a video in a while / found I wasn't subscribed / this seems to be a common occurrence for many RUclipsr's
Ah thank you! 🙏
Not sure what part of these video is more interesting, building the cabin or watching you eat lunch!!! Especially for this episode, it must have taken longer to eat lunch due to camera locations.
Maybe a tad longer! 🙏
Looks really great. Looking forward to the outdoor kitchen build.
Thank you!
Shellac came from beetles
Prachtige huis, oog voor detail, mag er trots op zijn👍,ook mooie omgeving amai. Doe zo verder. Groeten vanuit België 🇧🇪.
Thank you so much, Belgium! 🙏
Patrick, the view from "Christmas Tree Canyon" is absolutely gorgeous, & your doing a beautiful job my friend. BTW, my wife & I are going to be moving to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico on May 24,2024 due to medical reasons, but we'll continue to enjoy your videos. Sincerely, the old Montana cowboy, soon to be the New Mexico cowboy, Frank Scherping❤😊
Well that’s a big move! We visited the Sante Fe area a couple years ago, like it a lot. 🙏
Patrick, the entire cabin is absolutely amazing, you have done such a beautiful job on everything. I love the use of "Blue Pine" the caricature, & colors of blue pine really make things just "pop" Your friend, the new, New Mexico cowboy,
Frank Scherping❤😅
Thanks, Frank!
Hello from Midway, Tx I appreciate the check, I filled it in for 100k because it’s my birthday, so I’ll see ya in a few weeks boss… 😂 have a great weekend Patrick….
Happy Birthday! I’ll tell my accountant..
BTW, I’ve been watching since you began in all that hot weather. 😅
I remember that hot weather! Thank you. 🙏 it means a lot.
1:11 Each board is like a Christmas present, you don't know what you'll get. The wall hanging of ladder is smart idea. Before we lost our tiny house in New Mexico wildfires, we hung our ladder like that and during the day I used it to hang dish towel to dry, or display my Great Granny's quilts...so I hope Karen uses it in an art display ...useful and practical
Indeed like Christmas!
Sorry to hear about that tiny house.
I'm frustrated that I don't get extra extra points for being here since the beginning!
Ok fine. Extra points for you! 🙏
Too many screws.
It would have been cool if you used the pipe for the shelf brackets too 😊
Yes, I thought about it!
I appreciate you watching!
Did the floor boards really shrink that much?
By design the seems weren’t tight to begin with, but yes, they shrank even more than I thought. I like the look!
Thanks for the extra points and the " wood medal ' lol
love you videos .
Michael
Hey thanks so much! 🙏
very nice like the look so now that the floor is done and after the finished door trim and paint and kitchen build what will you do with all the spare time on your hands lol
Spare time? What are these words you speak of? 😅🙏
Awesome !!!!!
Looking good
Excellent
How often does the lacquer need to be reapplied?
I don’t know! Honestly it probably depends on use. Good question!
Did yall ever figure out what paint to use
Yes!
What are you going to do with the cabins? Rent?
At this point, just personal use.
Yes, Patrick. I love the open wall idea for the kitchen.
Hey good! It’s in the “plans.”
As always, another hit ! Thank you
Hey thanks!🙏
:54 You ever notice all the people that have homesteading channels, aren't homesteading? They bought the land.
Yeah it’s become a loosely defined term, hasn’t it.
@@LifeontheMoose I fear I'm wasting my time pointing things like this out to a combination of generations that lived to say, "I literally died when I heard that!" with no apparent trip to the ER.
i love wood. have i mentioned that before?
Me too! 🙏
I wasn't even worried about the door trim, but now that you mention it, remember the door trim!😉
lol I promise I will!
The floor is perfect! The color after lacquer brings more life to it!!
About the outdoor kitchen, I think the idea is really great! Here in Brazil we usually see it with a barbecue, a pizza and bread oven, and/or a wood-fired oven built on it using bricks for these ovens and the barbecue. I don't know what you plan, but this is what you have on outdoor kitchens in Brazil. 😉
Hugs from your Brazilian friend.
Those sound like great ideas! Not sure this will be quite as luxurious, but who knows. The plans aren’t written in stone. Or paper! 🙏
@@LifeontheMoose anyway, an outdoor kitchen will allow a warm bath even using a big basin or bucket even without running water if the stay there is longer as a few days. 😁
3:13 Everybody gets points? Then it's just like Who's line is it, the points are meaningless. How sad. I missed the very beginning. Let me go on record as a new person that I'm rejecting your points, making the rest of them just a little valuable. I think I got here when you were putting in the up side down floor.
I used to be hooked on that show! And I never even thought about that when I said it. Ok just you get a few extra points for bringing that up. 🙏
Same thing for me. It was a suggestion from the YT algorithm. GREAT find, great channel
Still love that old tree in the sunset ending.
I do too! It’s been dead for 8 years now, just can’t take it down.
They use insect shells for shellac.
That’s it! 🙏
Where's the bathroom?
Just a dry cabin for now..
Your whole video is in high-speed overdrive. You’re talking and all. At first I thought it was my iPad. But when the commercial came on, it was normal and then back to you it went to oh my gosh so it’s you making things go really, really fast even with your talking.
Hmmm. That shouldn’t be the case. Something with your service? I do have some time lapse, but the talking is normal. Well, at least as normal as I can talk..!
@@LifeontheMoose I personally think it’s a RUclips thing not you personally. Because the commercial was at the correct speed and then you come back on so RUclips‘s playing a lot of games with everybody. But I love listening to you and I love your little cabin would love to have it myself
Search “ playback speed in RUclips “ you might of accidentally changed your settings without realising it

🙏🙏
well done, sir
🙏
It’s been a long haul to this point. Can’t believe you’re almost finished. What a fantastic job we’ve done together! 😂. This was an excellent project constructed with care, thought, humor and heart. Well done Patrick me boyo! ☘️
My pleasure! Couldn’t have done it without you. 🙏
oooh, what was that brown, furry animal? ☺
A marmot.
@@LifeontheMoose A quick note to thank you for taking the time to reply to my question; it makes me feel important when you do it. I understand that you cannot possibly reply to everyone. Bless you.
