  • Some of my favorite statues around the historic center of Málaga. Details below!
    • Estatua del Comandante Benítez - 1926 - In the Parque de Málaga, it is a tribute to Comandante Julio Benitez and the officers and soldiers who died in the defense of the Igueriben position during the Rif War.
    • Arturo Reyes & Trini - 1964 - Near the AC Málaga Palacio Hotel, in the Parque de Málaga, is this statue of the novelist, poet and journalist Arturo Reyes Aguilar and Trini, a character in his work “The Schooner”.
    • Hans Christian Anderson - 2005 - Sitting on a bench in Plaza de la Marina, this statue commemorates Anderson’s visit to Málaga in 1862 which helped inspire his book, “A Journey on Foot from Holmen’s Canal to the East Point of Amager.”
    • Marqués de Larios - 1899 - Dedicated to Manuel Domingo Larios y Larios, 2nd Marquis of Larios, and it stands at the beginning of Calle Marqués de Larios, one of the most famous streets in the city, of which Larios was the main investor and promoter. The statue was thrown into the sea when the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed, and wasn’t recovered until after the Spanish Civil War.
    • La alegoría del Trabajo - 1899 - Standing on the back side of the Monument to the Marqués de Larios, this statue replaced Larios after he was thrown into the sea.
    • El Cenachero - 1964 - Found in the Plaza de la Marina is this fish seller carrying fresh fish in his “cenachos”, wicker baskets. The cenachero is a trade that has disappeared but still stands as a symbol of the city.
    • El Fiestero - 1998 - Back in the Parque de Málaga is the “Fiestero” or partygoer. He pays homage to the “verdiales”, a traditional music/dance from the region.
    • Ninfa del Cántaro - 1877 - Housed in a fountain in Parque de Málaga, the nymph stands on a colorful pedestal pouring water from her pitcher.
    • Cardenal Ángel Herrera Oria - 1970 - Next to the back of the cathedral, Herrera Oria was appointed bishop of Málaga in 1947. The cardinal pursued social justice, with a focus on providing education to the population.
    • Virgen de la Victoria - 1987 - Within the fence of the cathedral is a statue of the Virgin Mary, with the child Jesus sitting on her lap.
    • Alegoría Al Verano/El Invierno - This pair of statues representing summer and winter stand near the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba.
    • El Biznaguero - 1963 - Located in the gardens next to the city hall, this statue represents a very characteristic figure in Malaga, the seller of biznagas, another symbol of the city.
    • Pablo Picasso - 2008 - In Plaza Merced, near his birthplace, you will find one of the most famous people from Málaga. Sitting on a bench with a notebook and pencil, Picasso is ready for you to join him for a picture.
    • Miguel de los Reyes - 2010 - Found near the Jardín de los Monos in the Victoria neighborhood where he was born, Reyes was an important singer and musician who traveled the world and worked alongside some of the most important musical figures of his time.
This is just a small selection of statues and monuments here in Málaga. Visiting the different monuments throughout the city and taking the time to learn about the people they represent and their stories can help teach you more about this amazing city.
