  • We visited Rockaway Beach on July 4th weekend, which should be insanely busy, but follow our tips to have the beach all to yourself (and still eat amazing food) on any weekend.
    We decided to eat at Caracas Arepas. They're overpriced but SOOO good. We had the De Pabellón. Delicious. The line only took about 10 minutes.
    If you want the beach to yourself, stay on the A train (don't switch to the shuttle at Broad Channel. Make sure you get an A train for Far Rockaway (not Lefferts Blvd). The A train will go east along Rockaway Beach. Get off at Beach 60th Street. The surfing area starts around Beach 62nd Street. There are WAY fewer people on the beach down on this part. There are restrooms here, but no food, so pack a lunch.
    The food starts with Rippers at about Beach 84th Street. The blue food court in the video is at Beach 97th.

    Last time I was at Rockaway Beach was probably in 1964-65. I was about 6 or 7 years old. It is on my list of "places to revisit

      Yeah, it's been a while since we were out there (since we made this video!). Definitely a place to go revisit.

    Enjoyed your video. Wish it was summer now. As for food, you don't have to go all the way to Beach 86th St. to get something to eat. There's a strip mall adjacent to the Beach 67th St. subway station where you will find a Thai and Italian restaurants, as well as Checkers, Subways and Dunkin Donuts restaurant. There's also a Stop and Shop supermarket which also serve hot food. Not sure what kind of food you're into, but hopefully this helps you or anyone else reading this comment who may plan a future trip to the east end of Rockaway Beach.

      True. I didn't think to show that option. We wanted to go to Caracas Arepas specifically, but definitely should have mentioned that there are other options down where it's less crowded. Thanks for the tip! -Brian

    We lived 3 blocks away on Beach 56 th. St. in the fifties, this must be Arverne.

      Nailed it. Nice that you lived so close to the beach, but that is a far trek to get into the City, right?

    It’s a really amazing area, the water is a bit cold but otherwise it’s great! I’m saying that as one of the locals who live not far from the beach area (fr I see my house)

      We're jealous! It takes us over an hour to get to the beach. That'd be so nice living that close.

    I was born and raised in Rockaway, and Beach 59th St., by the No. 1 Murder projects in NYC, the Arverne Houses, won't get crowded. You want to see crowds? Go to 116th Street. Also, I have to laugh at this title "...Like A Local!" Locals don't go near Arverne. Locals don't get excited over shells. Locals don't swim where there's no life guard on duty. (Hint: That's why the beach was busier when you walked further because that beach was actually open to swimmers, the one you were on was not. You even recorded the sign that said "No Lifeguard on Duty, Swimming Prohibited.") Oh, and locals don't get sunburned because we use sunscreen and put on cover-ups when the sunscreen wears off.

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  5 лет назад +3

      I'm going to contend with you a little bit on some of your points. We are locals to New York, not to Rockaway. So I'll concede to your knowledge of the area, especially to the history of Averne Houses - we weren't aware of that. But you can't say locals don't get excited over shells. We live on the Upper West Side and rarely go to the beach, so yes, shells are exciting. And the "no lifeguard on duty" sign was at 84th street, not where we were swimming, but I imagine the people in the water at 84th street were locals too. And we all wore sunscreen, he just missed a spot and he's a redhead so he paid a price for it. -Brian

      All that negativity would probably wash away if you DID allow yourself to "get excited over shells" every once in awhile. Life's too short not to enjoy to the fullest!

    Which metro I have to take to go there? A or S ?

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  Месяц назад

      We took the A toward Far Rockaway and got off at Beach 60th. It's a lot less busy on that side, but there are far fewer amenities. Later in the video we walk up to Beach 98th where we got food. If you want to start here, you'll need to switch to the shuttle at Broad Channel or hop on an A heading to Rockaway Park.

    Go to Long Beach. Rockaway is gross

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  6 лет назад

      I've heard Long Beach is better. But you have to take the LIRR, right? We have unlimited metrocards, so we tend to stick to the subway. But maybe this summer we'll get out there. -Brian

    • @joshuatelem8796
      @joshuatelem8796 6 лет назад

      Yep, it's the last stop on the LIRR. It's honestly the best beach in the state in my opinion. Though be aware that the beach itself is not free during the summer. It's a 15 dollar charge, but you can gets special ticket with the LIRR that allows admission for a reduced rate in combination with the LIRR ticket. My favorite thing about that beach is the locals. There are so many different beach themed restaurants, clothing stores, down to earth people etc. That you feel like you're completely away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you like Rockaway then you'll certainly enjoy Long Beach.

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  6 лет назад

      Yeah, I've seen those deals on the LIRR site or at Penn Station or something. I'll have to check it out. Hopefully we can get out there this summer. You're pretty convincing. :) Thanks for the suggestions! -Brian

      From Manhattan take LI railroad,u can get a train/beach special otherwise it's 15.00 to get a beach pass,train leaves you 3-4 blocks from beach

      Believe the train/beach pass combo ticket runs about 24.00 - round trip LIRR & beach pass - takes about 55 min according to The site which I just checked.
      Make a vlog when u go ! Have fun ! 😎
