This 1000% it just shows those values were never important to them and they were just parrots repeating something they heard. Unfortunately for a lot of people that is their family members.

I live in Australia where it is compulsory to attend the ballot box on election day. More than 9 in 10 Aussies voted in our last national poll. Overwhelmingly, citizens here view voting as a serious obligation, so very few people waste their vote. What’s more, we have ranked choice voting, meaning that if nobody wins 51%, the candidate who most appeals to most people wins. All of this forces candidates to appeal to voters at the centre, so we rarely have to suffer the sensationalism and negativity which many American politicians use to “get out the vote”. Politics can still be devisive here, but our robust system means everyone accepts the result and moves on after election day. From everything I have seen, I believe Australia could be the most perfect democracy in the world and I dearly hope for some sensible election reform in the USA. Your voting system is tearing your country apart, and the world is better and safer when America is strong. ❤

If you don't believe me visit what we call a blue state then visit a red state, you will understand there's a huge difference and realize a popular voting system would never work. The founders created the Electoral College to purposefully give smaller states the power to match larger states during a national election to create a fair representation of not just the people but also the individual states that represent the people in each state.

A Stoic might choose to vote for Trump over Kamala Harris based on several philosophical principles valued in Stoicism: 1. **Pragmatism and Outcomes**: Stoics focus on the outcomes and the practical implications of political decisions. If a Stoic believes that Trump's policies align better with their values or lead to better results for the country, they might support him. 2. **Virtue and Character**: Stoicism emphasizes personal virtue and the moral character of individuals. If a Stoic perceives Trump as someone who embodies certain virtues such as resilience or decisiveness-traits they value-they may be inclined to vote for him. 3. **Views on Governance**: A Stoic might appreciate Trump's approach to certain governance issues, perhaps favoring a more hands-off government style or supporting principles that align with their understanding of autonomy and self-discipline. 4. **Historical Context**: The Stoic perspective often considers the broader arc of history. A Stoic might believe that voting for Trump is a choice that will positively affect the future, contributing to some desired stability or direction for the nation. 5. **Personal Agency**: Stoicism teaches the importance of personal agency and responsibility. A Stoic may feel more aligned with Trump's positions on individual responsibility, believing that societal support should encourage self-reliance. Ultimately, while each Stoic's reasoning will differ based on their beliefs and values, these principles illustrate why one might lean towards Trump over Kamala Harris.

I dunno. I'm tempted to agree, but if you think about it we're probably suffering from recency bias. Marcus was the emperor. A dictator combined with a deity. Rome was previously a republic and had fallen to such a dictatorship before his time. Rome was only fortunate to have 5 good dictators in a row. Their politicians were vicious and incredibly corrupt, to a degree that would make Donald Trump or Russian politicians blush with envy. Their citizens were decadent and enjoyed watching men kill and die in the Colosseum. Actually, in terms of choosing a leader of a country, I wouldn't put characters above all. Policies matter more and how effective are they in completing them. I asked him - " Would you let your pretty daughter to be isolated inside a room somewhere with him?" He shook it off, but wouldn't answer. I know he wouldn't, if he could do something about it. We all know who is the man of bad character running to become the most powerful man in the World. This time he will have the power of an Emperor. Try to be wise.
He’s never been credibly accused of any type of wrongdoing with any woman. Mostly kangaroo court type BS in So yeah, I would be 100% fine with my pretty daughter in a room with a Donald J Trump. The fact that you’ve been brainwashed speaks very poorly of your weak mind. Also, we’re not hiring somebody to be master stoic of the United States of America America. We need a strong capable leader to lead this country out of the abyss. Empty headed Kamala who failed upward all her life is not that person and you know it.
Thank you for the messages in this powerful video. Would like for many people to “do the right thing” and become a better version of themselves and vote for our constitutional rights. Courage is truly calling. Thanks Ryan, you have hugely impacted my life for the better since I discovered you several years ago. Gratitude.
I could be wrong, but I do believe I speak for a majority of your followers when I say that we prefer stoicism to political propaganda. I have gained some understanding of stoicism from your books and through various other platforms. Videos like this do not embody stoic ideals and you’re not teaching anyone anything ( in my opinion ), you are simply pushing a modern day political ideology but disguising it as teaching people about Marcus Aurelius. I love your content, man. I really do, and have gained a lot of knowledge on it, I think you have helped me learn to stand up for what I believe is right, no matter how harshly I get criticized, and to be sound in my principles. I understand this comment might draw criticism, but please know I come from a genuine place and from a love of the philosophy.
& to all of the people I see bashing politicians ( of either side ) on here; I just want you to ask yourself, does the person im voting for embody the stoic ideals I’m looking for as well? Whichever side you’re on, I firmly believe the answer, is no.
Thank you Ryan for this courageous and well thought out video. I have always been an active voter, but your writing on the Stoics is part of what inspired me to volunteer in this election. It is easy to have a defeatist attitude when it comes to voting (especially in a state such as Texas) but as Stoics we must ask ourselves 'what is within our ability to control?' My vote may not make a difference in some cases (my area is heavily gerrymandered) but if I can convince even one person to turnout on election day then it will be worth it.
Ryan, you’re clearly co-opting Stoicism for political ends. Marcus, being a product of the Roman elite, and carrying all of their views-I think we know who he’s voting for.
I just want to know how "concepts of policies" and tariffs driving high prices on goods average americans can barely afford are better than actual policies?
By “actual policies” do you mean increasing inflation with reckless spending and then instituting price controls on groceries which will (as history has shown) undoubtedly cause massive food shortages? Trump’s economic policies may be somewhat debatable but Kamala’s are downright insane
@@rustlepalace-inn7229 is that a fact? Can you cite your source for why you believe that? What legal policies did trump pass that made "everything significantly cheaper"?

@@dflamm210 yeah it is real objective. Kamala is a puppet for the deep state and Trump isn’t. Voting for Trump is as objective as fire is hot. And there’s a lot more points I can make but I don’t even need to go beyond that because it’s that objective and simple
stoicism is just as much about controlling what you can control as it is about not worrying about what you can't. We live in a system that allows us to make a choice and have our opinion counted, so that is why I'll vote in every primary, special election, and November election I can.
Difficult to fathom how half the country is eagerly preparing to vote for someone whose character and behavior is otherwise everything they would warn their own children against. “Don’t lie. A Stoic might choose to vote for Trump over Kamala Harris based on several philosophical principles valued in Stoicism:

Immune to flattery, has self control and doesn't cheat on others, promotes unity instead of division... yeah Trump is already out of the list
After reading Meditations, I cannot imagine Marcus Aurelius give trump the time of day, looking with detachment at his lack of emotional control and lack of critical thinking trump exhibits.
lack of critical thinking but you have a Ukraine flag lol
What percentage of goverment spending goes to Ukraine? Guess what, cumulatively all foreing affairs cost the US federal goverment a measly 0.9% of what they spend annually. However, you have perfectly summed up my political opinion in this video. Thank you Ryan
Stoicism has major flaws and this video illustrates it. It blinds those who are subjective to think their partisan principles are objective.
Is standing up for the rights of women courageous and just or is it standing up for the right to life of the unborn child?
The polar opposite position can both use stoic principles to support their stance.

Exactly. Too busy reading their white Christian nationalism manifesto videos.
Marcus Aurelius would despise this country and what it's become.
Rome had throughout its history bullied their neighbors through combat and conquest, killing many hundreds of thousands.
I don't think the US is worse than the Rome of his time. In fact, I think he would marvel at our excellence and leadership on the global stage, and be distracted by our technology.
He'd like the US far more than he would today's Roma.
I think you are so correct. The fact Ryan says all the time he would probably hate us reading his work but then goes on to milk every last drop of money out of "stoicism" talking about Marcus' private journal.
He despised the Roman Empire too, but did his duty anyway and made the best of it.

Not courageous at all. He is a coward. He didn't mention the unborn even one time, while mentioning minorities, gays and trans (which I have no problem with). However, no true stoic can support abortion. Do you think Marcus would support that? Is abortion virtuous? Abortion is also (mostly) used as a means to remove an inconvenient consequence of promiscuity. Do you think Marcus would support the current day promiscuity and lack of responsibility?
You guys are delusional. Marcus would not give you the time of day if he knew that you supported a candidate who has abortion as one of her core values.

The thing is that most of us (including myself) don't vote based on whether or not we "like" or "agree" with someone as a person. We vote based on their individual policies and track record.
