Good call...we're doing a ditch to mine gravel lengthwise along the runway for the 1,800' strip (less distance to move the material). We will eventually end up with a big gravel pit in one of the lower spots on the property that will fill with water
Love the reality of this video. Literally EVERY project we do on property is minimum of week when thought it would be a day. Every project,no matter how much planning was involved, has dozens of costly and unexpected learning lessons. It gives me an insanely new appreciation and respect for tradesfolk. It's amazing how many interconnected variables are involved in every [seemingly] small decision. Anyway, Runway is in 5 year plan. Kudos and congrats on the rural retreat
Wow, very ambitious! I built a 2200 foot runway, crowned and with proper drainage. Rolled it flat and smooth. Big issue here was clearing the thousands of rocks out. I’m sure you will be as proud of your work as I am of mine. Makes All the work maintaining it worth it.
Any "skeeters" up there, lol? Love to visit someday. You are a credit to the instructor profession. Thanks so much for the free ground school. It's really helped me.
I’ve been following for a little while. I live up in Fairbanks, I hope one day I can go down for some awesome training. Excited to see the finished product!
What’s the plan for the surface? Dirt, gravel or turf? Would love to hear more about how you grade and the tools to make straight, if that’s a goal. Congrats on all the progress!
Initially, I wanted grass, but it will likely just be gravel. Easier to maintain and fix...inevitably there is always ruts, holes, etc that need fixing
Haha...probably not DC-3s, but when we plow in the winter we need the width to have somewhere to put the snow. It ended up getting pretty narrow this winter with 4' tall snow berms

Can't wait to see that pop up on FAA' VFR chart
Dig a big pit for the water to drain to. Use the material to build up the runway. Think about large parking lots with a drainage pond.

Wow, this is incredible! Such a huge fan and totally love this project! Thanks for filling us all in on the Build Project!
Thanks for follwing along!

Certainly a lot more time and $ than anticipated, but super fun and rewarding in the end!
Big project, big challenges to overcome. That's what will make the finished project so incredibly satisfying.
Certainly will when it is all done!

this is my dream

Grader was on the field at my runway this week...stay tuned for updates :)
Ah yes, thanks for sharing the field of dreams videos
One of my dreams.Buy a property and build my own runway. This is awesome 👌
It's been a dream of ours for a while and now a reality!
I have been following and actually got my pilot license! Great place can’t wait to see it in operation!
As a developer and builder get the correct tools and hire a surveyor
As someone that wants to build my own private runway myself , thoroughly enjoyed this, can’t wait to take on the project
Good luck and have fun!
Yes pt. 2! Looks great, keep up the great work. Hope to maybe come one day when I hopefully fulfill my Alaskan flying dream🤘🏼
Nice to see you back good luck with your “little” project.
Wow it's coming right along in my opinion. That's an amazing place for sure. Alaska is such a beautiful state.
Certainly making progress! This was back in October 2021, so we're moving quick. We'll get another update posted here soon!
Lot of hard work, it will be nice when finished.
Certainly will! At least it is a fun learning experience
Thanks for the update, What a job!
It's been fun! We'll try to get caught up on video editing and get some more current updates here soon!
You could also plant Mushrooms to open up the soil structure with their mycelium roots and thus, improve drainage by opening soil pores.
Good to know, we are actually getting ready to spread seed for grass to help with how dusty I gets.
Best of luck on that runway. We’ll follow the progress from here in St. Louis. Hoping it all works out for ya. 🙂
At least we're headed in the right direction! Thanks for following along!

Come by and say Hi sometime!

Thanks for sharing your progress Jon, great to see it! Your place is on my future list of destinations so I'm watching with great interest. 😃🙌
Sweet… it’s been awesome seeing the transformation at your place, dirt work is slow…
MUUCCHHH SLOOWWER than expected...lol
Great commentary
Now I feel bad for asking for an update on Facebook. You have been busy. Inspiring work John!
Haha...thank you! Glad to finally get an update posted on here...should have more current stuff posted up soon!
Keep on inspiring us.
how many acres is the property?
Any update to this? I got to see the mud bath he is eluding to! What did you have to do to address it? Better dirt? More drainage?
Please revisit some of out latest update videos on the project to see what we are up to.
How do you keep from having other pilots land on your private runway?
Just found your channel and I subscribed!
Awesome! Thank you! We'd appreciate you sharing it with your friends!
Will do.
Erm, just a comment. Are you having DC3s flying in? That runway looks awfully wide.
Looks like you are having fun.

I wish I lived close to you. I would volunteer my time operating your dozer to make nice long, wide, straight runways for you!.
You can always come up to Alaska for a couple weeks in the summer!
Got it thank you watched video
Okay ✅
I had an engineer shoot center line… just eyeballed the rest
1100mtrs on each should be a decent amount of length

You need an engineer on site, it will save you resources.
will be snow covered 80% of the time lol
That's what skis are for
lol
Thanks so much!! 2:32 - 2:36 🟢
