Beautiful images! The Red squirrel in the hollowed out log was my favorite! The jumping squirrel was fantastic, too! The buzzard feeding was extraordinary! Love the light and the snowfall!
I love the woodland hides and that looks fabulous. We are blessed with red squirrels here on the island and no greys. I have mentioned in the past about technical details being very important and would liked to hear more about the settings for photographing in snow, and in particular the exposure settings required. But as always Dan, I loved the video and God bless your wife for sitting there in the cold whilst you had fun :)
Thanks for your continued support Andy. For shooting in the snow I always use spot metering rather than the standard matrix metering. This way I can ensure that the subject is perfectly exposed. I always have the histogram visible in my viewfinder and if I see the curve moving too much to the right I will then add exposure compensation to ensure that I don't blow the highlights in the snow. It is a bit of a balancing act but I find this way ensures that I rarely lose images to over exposed highlights. All the best 👍🏻
Thanks very much, really appreciate it mate. Couldn't agree more, Norman is a cracking bloke and has clearly put in a lot of hard work to make this as incredible as it is 👍🏻
Superb! Love the variety of birds with the snow. I was able to feed 2 red squirrels on Brownsea Island last month & as you said it’s an experience you’ll never forget. One with the cracked hazelnut on an open palm (with gentle paws on my hand); the other took it gently from between my thumb & index finger (I could even feel his lips and whiskers). Cracking open & leaving the bare hazelnut is the key to getting them to linger otherwise they tend to scarper to cash them (although they were also hiding the bare hazelnuts). At one time, I had 5 red squirrels chasing each other. Managed to capture portraits at 35mm and using Z 105/2.8 MC. Keep up the good work!
Really enjoyed reading about your own experiences with the red squirrels, it really is a fabulous experience. I can imagine that the portraits shot at 35mm were incredible. All the best 👍🏻
Excellent video and photos as always Dan! I don’t think I have ever seen such a busy feeding station. Amazing photo opportunities for you in gorgeous light 🙂 Red Squirrels in the snow? …. what’s not to like! …. especially if one poses in a hollow log or jumps through the snow 🙂 I did wonder whether you picked up a Brambling when you said there were a lot of Chaffinches. Sure enough, you did. It is always worth looking out for Bramblings within Chaffinch flocks in the winter months. I hope that Jen defrosted 🤣 Richard
That shot at 23:13 is just stunning. I said it on your Instagram and I'll say it again. What a shot! Really enjoying see the different hides across the UK. The Scottish hides just look outstanding. I live in Berkshire so hundreds of miles away but would love to do a mini Scottish trip and take some of these in...and maybe visit Mull whilst I'm up there :)
Thanks very much, really appreciate it mate. I would definitely recommend a trip up to Scotland, there are so many different locations and hides to visit 👍🏻
Hello from Openreach 👋 Had the pleasure of repairing pops' WiFi today - passed me your business card before I left - you'll have to get buying him a new campervan😉
So very wonderful, Dan! Thanks so much for bringing me along. I apologize that I am watching this with a roaring fire, but that's just the breaks I supposed! LOL!!!
What a great video Dan, thanks for sharing. The photos were absolutely top class. I've now booked that trip to Mull that I was inspired by your video to do. Might even extend the trip by a few more days and get over to Glencoe for some landscape photography too. Looking forward to the next one mate, all the best.
That was just fantastic Dan, what a place and not just for the photography but for just enjoying the wildlife generally. definitely look to visit next time we up there, might even look to stay over. Just loved the squirrel and buzzard images. Look forward to the next video. 😀👍
The red squirrels were great!, but the buzzard tops it for me. The video and stills were awesome! 👏Even the pheasant plays it part in the photographs. With those rustic colours. Great vlog Dan.
great video, and on the topic of ospreys , I missed a breeding pair at my local woods in coventry nr wear I live , saw other peoples photos the day before I rolled up , all the best Shane uk
Wow what a truly amazing, beautiful, stunning video Dan,it has everything and the snow was just the icing on the cake. It really was “ Magical “Thanks Dan you have made my day.
Great video and stunning photos, the red squirrel is adorable. I am new to your channel and have only watched a few videos but they always make me smile. You have inspired me to book the kingfisher hide but it's not til April, I can't wait. My only concern is getting the settings wrong and missing the shots, the hides are too expensive for me to mess's up.
Thank you so much Pam. Inspiring people to get out in nature and experience some of the places/subjects I have had the privilege to see is the greatest compliment I can receive. You will have a fantastic time in the kingfisher hide, if you need any help with settings for the kingfisher hide, let me know 😊
What a great video and such a diverse array of wildlife and during you recent video you have changed my mind on using Hides. I'm hoping to have the opportunity to photograph a great grey in the wild when I visit Yellowstone this year.
Great to see a video at my local hide, Norman is a great guy. -2 though practically balmy, we had -11 on my last visit. I was even more wrapped up than your wife, ended up putting an Oodie over my coat. I've been lucky enough to have a squirrel join me in the hide too. It obviously got fed up with the rain and stayed in the hide to eat its nut. I can recommend the Osprey hide too, you get amazing shots. Great video thanks.😀
Thanks very much Doreen, really appreciate it. I am really looking forward to returning to Normans for the Osprey in the Spring/Summer. I can see me revisiting this hide at that time too. All the very best 😊
Cracker video again Dan, been to Normans a few times myself, an had a great time there..also recommend the Osprey hide..Had some fantastic shots from there..Hope to bump into you one day, cheers Den
Thanks very much Den, really appreciate it mate. I am looking forward to returning to Normans for the Osprey in the spring/summer. I'm sure we will cross paths at some point in the future 👍🏻
Thanks very much Philippa, really appreciate it. The gloves are from Sealskin, they are really good for photography as you can fold back the finger and thumb giving you access to your camera controls. All the best
Thanks very much Robert, really appreciate it mate. Yes I only use e-shutter as I find any shutter noise now quite intrusive as I've become used to the silence 👍🏻
Dan that's great work as usual brilliant can I ask what heated vest the Boss got you also what gloves are you using and finally what sort of distance was the buzzard away as I've got a couple hanging around and starting to come to road kill I have a Tragopan hide so want to give it a try
Thanks very much Derrick, really appreciate it mate. The vest is from an online company called New Forest Clothing and the Gloves are from Sealskin, I would recommend them both 👍🏻
Beautiful photos and video!! Is it possible that the crow that chased the buzzard away was a raven? I’ve not seen a raven in person and am not an expert, but the beak and feathers over the beak don’t look like the crows I see here in North Carolina. Beautiful bird either way!!
Thanks very much Louisa, really appreciate it. I'm really pleased that someone has made this observation because I thought at the time that it could have been a Raven due to the feathers on the beak??? As you say, beautiful either way! All the best
Hi dan great video m8 ? Could you recommend any hides in the northwest uk for disabled people or a video would be nice thanks for the great videos and take care m8
Thanks very much Brian. I can recommend Yorkshire Photography Hides and Leeds Wildlife hides, both would be accessible for disabled photographers. I will look to put together a video on this at some point this year 👍🏻
I use Sealskin gloves and would definitely recommend them. They allow you to flip back the thumb and forefinger which gives you great usability with your camera. They are 100% waterproof and very warm.
Definitely a red letter day 😊 and some stunning memories and pictures to take away with you, thanks for sharing it with us
Blimey Dan, you've done it again. Another great video and a wonderful set of images from a wonderful day. Thanks for sharing your day.

Definately yellowhammer and brambling. Good to give Norman visibility. Only live 30 minutes away and have visited several times.

Thanks very much Andy, really appreciate it mate 👍🏻

Loving this weeks addition 😎 but I am running out of your vids, more please ! Do you always use e-shutter? Can’t hear any shutter chatter.
Thanks very much Robert, really appreciate it mate. Yes I only use e-shutter as I find any shutter noise now quite intrusive as I've become used to the silence 👍🏻
I like the videos but I LOVE the photos ….

What gloves do you use. Would you recommend
I use Sealskin gloves and would definitely recommend them. They allow you to flip back the thumb and forefinger which gives you great usability with your camera. They are 100% waterproof and very warm.
@ thanks. I have tried Vallerrett but they are cold in the fingers.
So will take a look.
What Nikon are you using Dan?
I use a Nikon Z9 👍🏻
What lens were you using in the hide?
Nikon Z400mm f2.8TC 👍🏻
Please Dan can you do Xmas cards with the pictures from this episode.
Great idea David, watch this space 👍🏻
Looks like a brambling.
Confirmed, thank you👍🏻
