  • @brittabadie1512
    @brittabadie1512 2 года назад +33

    Les stroud is a legend. Solo documentary camping is seriously scary as hell and takes a special human to not only accomplish it, but do so with little to no injuries and never coming anywhere near death. 95% of the population wouldn’t last 24hrs out there without getting bitten, stung, or taken out by dirty water or food.

      95% ? That’s what many living in the Bay Area or Los Angeles might think but it turns out there are entire states full of hunters & fishermen who’d be just fine. The reason SAR has exploded in the past decade is because far too many urban and suburbanites dawdle off into hardcore wilderness with a bottle of water and a phone. They fail to respect American wilderness for what it is: wilderness. Drug usage in the outdoors also contributes to a lot of SAR incidents. Gen X is the last generation who grew up learning to troubleshoot & problem solve in the woods because our entire childhood’s through adolescence and high school years no one had cell phones. Those who could afford a “car phone” were typically not the REI/hiking types. It was understood that if you twist an ankle, dehydrate or get lost you better have a skillset & some tools because there’s no helicopter coming

I hail from the piedmont area, not as far south as this, but so much of what Les covers here is useful throughout the South, not just the swamps. I grew up about 60 miles from there in the same kind of terrain. Loved camping in the woods as a kid. In the wet season it’s all flooded. In the dry season it’s a jungle.
    I courted my wife with canoe trips on the Alapaha River. Once we went out and the gators were in the rut or something and we’re all over the place.
    My dad was a guide in the Okefenokee swamp and we went out there all the time.
    When I saw this episode as a kid I was just getting into survival and primitive skills. I got so excited to see him in my back yard.
    Even though he butchered the name Altamaha.

    As someone who is from South Georgia I can tell you ....the bugs are absolutely ridiculous, the heat of the day is rough, and being in the swamp with minimal items is not easy at all. He did a very great job and he did alot of things that we was locals would do in the same circumstances. If you're ever stranded in an area like this you should avoid drinking from the swamp itself and the moss on the trees makes for a great fire starting material.

    the only thing i was ever disappointed with was his fishing attempts in these shows. i still love them and probably have seen each episode 3+ times, and am still watching all of them through again right now, but i dont really see how he thought the spring with a leech and a credit card would ever catch anything on that thick line. The card is so unnatural when its sitting still like that, and if he would have just take a while to work with that spring, he could have actually made a decent hook that a fish could actually swallow. The 'hook' the way he left it would never catch a fish...it would definitely get scared away by the rope or the credit card the way it was just sitting still in the water. I feel like the only time ive seen him actually get any fish was when he had the fishing pole in alaska when he caught the handful of Arctic Char, and thats one of my favorite episodes

    Well done episode. Just to note, the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake is becoming rare, if not entirely endangered, so do not kill one unless your survival absolutely depends upon doing so. This was not so true at the time of this filming, so no criticism of this great instructor. He puts Bear Grylls, and his, imo, mis-representation and often horrible survival advice to shame. I recommend Les Stroud's survival book -- it is filled with gems. If you see this post, Mr. Stroud, YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

    He mentioned the damp at night. Here in the South once it gets into the low 60s to 50s you can easily get hypothermia due to the high humidity which just strips away your body heat…particularly at night. And if there is any breeze even low 70s can be dangerous at night if you are wearing minimal clothing…like you would during 80-90+ degree days. Close to large bodies of water or even along creeks/rivers is worse on days where it is hot during the day & cool/cold at night due to increased moisture & not blocking any wind. You need something like full rainwear to keep the wind off & warm layers underneath.
    - I’ve helped with search & rescue where we found people who went out only wearing shorts, tank tops & sandals suffering major hypothermia in late April or well into May if it rained. Or even June if they were on the creek/river and were wet when night came. It’s especially dangerous for children. But most people don’t think about temperature can be an issue when it’s 80-90+ during the day & 60-70s at night. The other factor which often makes hypothermia a major risk for those stranded along creeks/rivers or lost along lakes is the fact many people become sunburnt during the day causing them to lose heat more rapidly at night.

But I can tell you this, there are a lot of good fish in those swamps. I would of started fishing from day one. Shoelaces for line, and worms for bait and they can be found in the dirt everywhere.
