I have had this chainsaw for about 6 months now and have cut a lot of wood with in that time, so I think I can give it fair evaluation. I have to admit I was very skeptical of battery powered chainsaws, but this thing has won me over. After doing a good bit of research on line, I settled on this Greenworks 16" 40V G-Max chainsaw based on price and good reviews. Now it’s my turn to give it a review.

Thank you for this comprehensive and informative review. Excellently done in scope, clarity, and hands-on demonstrations, it was a great balance of entertaining and informative, and I found it really helpful. I've been doing research re: chainsaws for homeowners, and had decided on Greenworks and was leaning toward this 16" model. Your video showed me this model does, indeed, look like the right pick for me! I really appreciate such a well-done video and you sharing your experience with this tool. All my very best to you!

Belly-laughed at 2:33. Very cute! I appreciate your demo being comprised of cuts on a freshly-fallen, large diameter hardwood. This is probably the 15th review of cordless chainsaws I've binge-watched in the last hour, and every other one "demonstrated" the saws on small-diameter, dry (if not dead!) pine. Also, thank you for keeping the background music LOW (so many RUclipsrs get this wrong, rendering their video unwatchable). Thorough, excellent job. Subbed! Thanks, again. Now, Scotty-beam me up!

Thinking of investing in this guy after spending copious hours reviewing the top 10 choices. I want to be able to feel it before buying (which I can do at Lowe's) because I'm 5'3" and 125 lbs. and want to be able to handle it effectively. What really helped was seeing the sizes of wood you could cut, the overall size of the saw (comparatively), and the saw breakdown (for maintenance and chain replacement). I build anything and everything but have yet to foray into chainsaws. Thanks for the thorough review; I was adopted as a child and wished you could adopt me again as an apprentice after seeing your video.

The low kickback chain is a good safety feature for folks who don't have extensive experience with chainsaws,

Very timely video. I am going today to look at chainsaws. You have succeeded in convincing me to go "battery" vs "2-stroke". There is nothing more worthless than a seldomly used 2-stroker that won't start resulting in being a good "boat anchor". My needs will seldomly cut more than 6" to 8" stuff anyway.

Good afternoon sir. Thank you for offering to do this video for my old buddy Stan. I'll make a special trip to the McDonald's 'Liars Table' tomorrow and let him watch this first hand. After all...it IS the liars table and I'm sure he wouldn't believe me telling how good this thing is. That machine certainly performed in an exemplary fashion. I really don't think their engineers figured it would really be cutting 20" hardwoods....lolol !!
I really laughed out loud at the first sound effect !! You certainly did what I consider to be overall a very good evaluation and I'm sure it is going to help Stan in making a decision. He's balking at the much higher price of the Makita 36v, 14" saw, so the Amazon pricing you listed should be much more to his liking.
Thank you sir, for taking the time to produce this video and especially for maintaining your typical awesome style throughout !! Great video.

Please understand that I'm not being critical of your review of this saw; it is more of an observation of your choice of this particular model.
Given where you live; it appears that you have access to some good sized trees; far larger than this saw can COMFORTABLY handle. If this test was to show what this saw is ultimately capable of; then it was a good test.
That being said; I would hope that you have much larger saws at your disposal. This coming from someone who has saws ranging from 6"-24".
I REALLY like all of them; but there is a time and place for each of them.

Oh man, that big log cantilevered out in the air, perfect for cutting up without even bending over and not touching the ground. I would have bucked it up from the end instead of dropping the whole log. I assumed you're bucking firewood. I also would have inserted some smaller pieces under that big log rather that dropping it on the ground.
The Greenworks saw looks very good. It doesn't have some of the design flaws of some of the other saws like the DeWalt. With any battery equipment it's important to choose the platform carefully because the most expense is the batteries and you don't want a lot of mixed battery chargers and batteries. I have Makita shop tools and the same batteries power their larger outdoor line as well by using two.
The Makita also has an annoying button to press to activate the saw. It deactivates after letting off the trigger far too quickly. This can be defeated by wedging a right angled piece of plastic in the upper handle switch. It fools the saw into thinking you are still holding it. If you don't pull the trigger it still shuts down after a minute or so, but it gives you time to do stuff with the wood, like drive a wedge.
Most good battery saws output around 1200 watts under maximum loading. I don't know what the Greenworks outputs, but it looks typical. This is not much different than corded saws, but since battery saws are usually brushless, they are a bit more energy efficient. Saw batteries usually contain anywhere from around 150 to 300 watt hours of energy. It's on the specifications for your batteries. I've found that a half kilowatt will cut a fair size pickup truck load from 16 inch logs. If you want to cut firewood, have enough batteries to total more than 500 watt hours and have multiple chargers. About 2 6Ah 36V batteries Fill your wagon or truck, go home, unload, rest, eat, drink and while you are doing that recharge your batteries. This shouldn't take more than about an hour.
Switching batteries isn’t a big deal like fueling up with gas, but it's nice not to have to switch. Batteries are the expensive part, so stick with a single platform. I happen to already have a rather large collection of Makita LXT batteries and chargers. The Makita oil reservoir is large enough it doesn't need topping off until about 500 watt hours of use.
For those who aren’t familiar with batteries and electrical terms, voltage doesn’t measure power or capacity to do work or chain speed. Amp hours isn't work or total power either. To estimate how much wood you can cut you need volts, amps and time. You need watt-hours. Multiply the voltage of your saw by the amp hour rating. This is watt hours. Be careful, some companies use “max" or maximum voltage for marketing. Always use the actual running voltage which has to be a multiple of the 3.6V lithium cell.
Here’s some data for comparison that I’ve acquired for those who are interested:
    Ryobi 40V (36V nom) 5Ah battery weighs 3.05 lbs (32) x (5) = 160 watt hours
    Briggs & Stratton (Victa) 82Vmax 72V nom 5.7 lbs (72) x (4) = 288 watt hours
    Husqvarna 36V (nom) 4.2 Ah battery weighs 3.21? lbs (36)x(4.2) = 151 watt hrs
    Greenworks 72V nom (80 max) 4 Ah battery weighs 5.5 lbs (72)x(4) = 288 watt hrs
    Greenworks 72V (80 max) 2 Ah battery weighs 2.8 lbs (72)x(2) = 144 watt hrs
    Milwaukee 18V (nom) 12Ah battery weighs 3.7 lbs. (18)x(12) = 216 watt hrs
Makita takes two standard tool batteries of any amp hr rating. They all weigh nearly the same.
    Two (2) Makita 18V (nom) 6 Ah batteries weigh 2.7 lbs. (2)x(6)x(18) = 216 watt hrs.
    Makita also runs on 5, 4 and 3 Ah batteries with progressively lower run times with the same approximate weight. (2) x (5) x (18) = 180, (2) x (4) x (18) = 144, and (2) x (3) x (18) = 108
    Echo 54V 2Ah weights 2.65 lbs (54) x (2) = 108 watt hrs
    Echo 54V 4Ah weights 4.1 lbs (54) x (4) = 232 watt hrs
Dewalt 54V (nom, not max) 4Ah battery weighs 3.2 lbs (54)x(4) = 216 watt hrs
    Still with 36V 4.9 Ah battery weighs 3.8lbs (36)x(4.2) = 178 watt hrs
    Stihl with 36V 6.3 Ah (AP 300) weighs 3.8lbs (36)x(6.3) = 226 watt hrs
    Redback 120V [108?]3Ah battery weighs 4.0 lbs (108)x(3) = 324 watt hrs
    EGO 56V 5 Ah battery weighs 4.9 lbs (56) x (5) = 280 watt hrs
    McCulloch 36V (nom) (36) x (4) = 144 watt hrs
Most of these saw brands appear as though they cut equally well during use. My Makita with a 16" bar and full chisel chain seems to cut about the same as the best I've witnessed in videos like yours. I take along tool batteries equivalent to about 500 watt hours and cut all that my RZR can safely handle in steep terrain. I cut 9" length, which requires twice the normal amount of cutting for the same amount of firewood.
Let's say you're using a Greenworks 4Ah battery that contains 144 watt hours of energy and it draws 1000 watts while under full load. It can maintain full load draw [(60x144)/1000] = for 8.6 minutes. Of course one seldom maintains constant full load in the normal course of cutting wood, so the battery appears to last much much longer than that.
Voltage has little to do with torque or chain speed. High voltage justs allow for smaller wires in the motor windings and connections, and marketing hype. For example, the 18V Milwaukee produces a "ton" of torque and chain speed (another good battery platform). The downside is that the motor has to be really heavy & beefy in order to handle high amperes. Total saw weight is important to some old folks like me. Light high energy density batteries combined with light motors (higher voltage) produces the lightest saws without sacrificing power output. It looks like you made a good choice.

Hi Gerald! Thanks for the in-depth commentary on cordless tools. Looks like you’ve spent a lot of time researching this! No, I don’t buck up wood this size because I don’t have a log splitter and don’t have a need for firewood other than our outdoor fire pit. I’ll cut up some of the limbs of these trees and use my Kindling Kracker to split them. So I just cut them to 5’ to 7’ lengths and scoop them up with my pallet forks and haul them to a comfortable resting place else where on the property or offer them to friends and family.

    • @geraldmoore6257
      @geraldmoore6257 5 лет назад +1

That's part of the reason I cut 9 inch lengths. The shorter the wood the easier to split. I split a pile sitting on a stool. I use old True Temper boy scout hatchets, they are solid and don't have a handle eye. I use a small 3 lb hammer to split with. The knottier pieces I cut even shorter or saw through the knots. It's fun to split wood and not tiring at all. I Definitely don't get winded. I'm 70 and have low lung capacity.
Safety note: If you try this method wear eye protection and protective clothing. The setting position exposes you to possible flying metal, but I suppose that's true of any metal to metal hammering.
Another reason I use very short wood is my house is "super insulated" and I can't put 3 or 4 18" pieces in the stove, too much heat! I can control it better with short hunks.

I was wondering if there's a way to swap the bar/chain to one of the more aggressive/faster cutting Oregon PowerCut/SpeedCut models. Thanks 10ktube! I’m not sure if you can do that. The saw is designed for the “low profile” narrow kerf blade, so if the PowerCut/SpeedCut blades are wider and made for a more powerful gas-powered saw then I doubt the Greenworks would handle it. Thanks for watching!
