    The original N64 version did have a map. It also acted as a crosshairs for your aim

    I like how the Turok setting is completely asinine by design. I LOVE the Lost World type setting, and I’m sure that’s because I watched the Peter Jackson version of King Kong (favorite part is the one where they get swarmed by giant bugs) and the dumb Land of the Lost movie with Will Ferrell (that film is so bad it’s good😂). The idea of a place where there’s a mashup of different civilizations and organisms that do not mesh is really cool. It’s too bad that the studio went under and the prequel Turok Evolution was half baked. Let’s hope that Nightdive Studios can remaster it like they’ve done with the other three where they fix up various issues with the originals, while remaining mostly faithful. The 2008 reboot can be forgotten.
    You’d think that we’d get a reboot that uses the best aspects from across the series to create the perfect Turok game since Boomer Shooters are popular again. If done right a Turok game that learns from past mistakes and uses some modernizations/fixes that were learned from newer games could revitalize the franchise.

      I'm fully convinced that this is one of the most untapped series I've ever played.
      I'm saying that and getting a little ahead of myself. The videos will extrapolate this out way more.

    • @shreksnow1918
      @shreksnow1918 9 месяцев назад +1

      Those videos will be interesting to see. For me one of the most interesting things about Turok is how rapidly the series changes. The first is a Boomer Shooter with basically no narrative, outside of what’s described in the manual. The sequel has more of a story, but at its heart the thing is still a Boomer Shooter that fixes a lot of the original’s flaws and builds on what works. The third is much more linear with an even greater emphasis on story thanks to Half-Life (even though it looks really jank my today’s standards it’s still really impressive what they were able to do with the N64. It makes me think of what Rare had planned for Dinosaur Planet. Too bad that Nintendo “suggested” they change their original IP into a Star Fox game because Sabre vaguely resembles Fox. It’s also too bad that the Microsoft buyout basically killed the Rare that used to exist). The prequel Turok Evolution tried to add in flying sections and more scripted encounters that didn’t entirely work out since the game was so rushed. Then the 2008 reboot tried to copy a bunch of other shooters and didn’t understand what made those games work.
      I’m VERY glad that I played it on a Steam Deck (it would definitely be better on an actual PC. Thankfully, I have a good laptop) and not the N64’s controller. I have no idea why they thought that design was good. I’m sure it works really well for some games, but a shooter with a lot of precise platforming simply does not mesh.
      Do you think you’ll cover any of Sony’s shooters like Killzone and Resistance? Both of those games look really fun. Thankfully Sony is slowly starting to learn that putting their games on PC makes them a crazy amount of money. They also put the PsP Resistance on PS Plus recently.

    While I have 0 nostalgia for N64 games nor like it's 3D rendering look, Turok seems fun to try someday, it looks like an interesting and somewhat unique game.
    And how handhelds have turned around, as I'd probably play it on my Steam Deck, where I'm more tolerant rougher parts of a game.
    This while finding near 0 enjoyment in Mario 64, aside from the OST, though the same applied to Odyssey and even Spyro for me.
    The GameBoy soundtrack sounds like something which might be material for my general playlist, but otherwise I'm not that interested in the 8-bit difficulty.
    It's greyscale also happens to be what my PC's monitor struggles with the most, scrolling parts flickered majorly on my end.
    Thankfully I'm not photosensitive, heck, I play my music with ProjectM visualisations.

    • @Zerbraxi
      @Zerbraxi  10 месяцев назад

      Flickering is the bane of my existence in some of those older games. I can't help but always see it and I've spent WAY too much time and money over the years getting the right equipment to play those older games as correctly as possible. It's an obsession at this point lol.
      Considering Mario 64, Odyssey, and Spyro didn't scratch an itch for you, then it might be worth playing Turok more like a straight shot shooter and ignoring the Chronoscepter collection unless you find yourself really enjoying it. I think the general gun play and movement makes it a fun way to kill a few hours at the very least. I've seen the remaster on Steam go on sale quite a bit.

    I remember a hard playthrough of Turok I on PC where I was so low on ammo at some point it turned into a stealth mission to get past enemies to find ammo. Fun times!

      Thinking back I really should've shown off the cheats a bit more. The creativity of cheat codes during this era were really something impressive that I miss so much.
      Also, not sure if you know but the rainbow textures cheat, LLTHCLRSFTHRNBW, stands for aLL THe CoLoRS oF THe RaiNBoW

    The only thing I remember about the first one, that I never beat any of the level without cheats. 😅
    But I agree about the level-design, I think the series as a whole would had more staying power had they leaned more in the Metrovenia- or even Immersive-sim genre. Especially the second game seemed to move into this direction.

      There's a lot to say about Seeds of Evil, but in general I think you're right. I think the gunplay is important but only if they grow and develop the other core systems long with it, or even more.

      I could've, and do show footage I captured from it. However, with games that have multiple versions I often try to highlight either the best way to play it, or what is most accessible. Since both are fundamentally the same in terms of content, I went for the remastered since that's the easiest way to play it today separate from emulation.
