For games that don't use those advances (i.e. OG, 360, and One games), then you can settle for an external SSD and be totally fine.
The internal SSD is a lot faster that the external USB drive. However the CPU decompression is where it's bottlenecked. Would be interesting to see velocity architecture in action. This affirms my contention. Based on my experience with working with video files that often easily exceed 250GB the ability to edit and read that data the difference isn't massive between a SATA SSD and internal NVMe. The CPU is the biggest difference, followed by the flash/memory controller and the type of memory used. A drive with a higher sustained read rate will provide a better experience with larger file sizes than one with a slightly faster max read/write.

Let me know if you'd like help. I'd be happy to do so even if only silently, behind the scenes.
I believe we'd see more performance out of a Samsung 961 NVMe drive if there was a 10Gb/s bus as the SATA drive is limited to 6Gb/s already and a 961 would max out a 10Gb/s bus on sustained reads (and I assume Zen2 is more than powerful enough to decompress data fast enough to not limit the load speeds)
Basically "USB 3.1 Gen 1" limits us to around 500MByte/s (considering the overhead being about 20%)... in other words about the same speed as SATA 3. Too bad... there is no reason to use a NVMe SSD (i did it too btw) with an XBoX console. I guess people can just get a fast (non QVO) SATA SSD. 🤷🏻♂️ Or of course the Microsoft's proprietary SSD solution. That should be limited by the USB 3.1 Gen 1 Interface.

You could play Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox one games using a USB hard drive on the series x. You can’t play games meant for series x or s using a USB hard drive though. If you guys don’t want to pay $220 for a expansion card, I suggest you guys buy a USB hard drive since you guys could just transfer games you don’t play as much to your USB and when you want to play it you could just transfer it back to your SSD.
These kind of tests are cool to see, but honestly, I have well over 20tbs of external storage across a handful of USB 3.0 drives I've collected this generation that I'll be using to "store" games. When I want to play something, I'll offload it to the internal while I cook dinner, have my morning coffee, take a dump, etc. No need to run out and buy storage that's expensive and speeds up transfer by only minutes (or seconds when it comes to load times).
We'll both consoles have decompression chips but he said that the BC is not using the SSD decompression architecture so that's why the cpu is doing it.
@@shishio3284 This has me thinking that there will be a fair difference in BC game loading on the PS5 compared to the XSX. Philipp S all I know is that on PC it is generating a shader cache when you launch it. No matter how many time you play the game it will always appear BUT it will be quicker the more you play.
When it comes to console it’ll more than likely improve with more launches of the game on that particular drive but it may not be a great improvement until the next gen update from Gearbox arrives. Only time will tell
The FeeN_ thanks! Yeah, I play on pc and console. I can’t see any speed improvements after launching it multiple times on console. Maybe the cache gets discarded every time. Really bad solution, but maybe the next gen update will help.

So basically, the internal SSD doesn't actually seem to be that much faster than an off-the-shelf SSD, but the interface and optimizations used by Series S/X software could make a huge difference. For games that don't use those advances (i.e. OG, 360, and One games), then you can settle for an external SSD and be totally fine.
it's same where cpu is doing the most work
Only 10 sec slower on HDD load also. External HDD seems to better investment for old games. Not every game is this slow btw.
The internal SSD is a lot faster that the external USB drive. However the CPU decompression is where it's bottlenecked. Would be interesting to see velocity architecture in action.
And even more interesting would it be to see if the PS5's hardware decompression is active on PS4 games while loading from an external drive for example. I love this whole topic, it's fascinating.

Thanks, Rich. This is exactly what I wanted to see from you on this as I already use a 1TB SSD on my X1X and planned on moving it to XSX. It's a shame that they don't offer USB 3.2 (aka 3.1 gen2) to get that 10Gb/s bandwidth for externals. It would help that NVMe drive shine over the SATA one.
Also, I heard you mention how overloaded your 5 man team will be with the launches. Let me know if you'd like help. I'd be happy to do so even if only silently, behind the scenes.
he said it seemed that they are suing a better USB then it may be mis named and it may be 3.2 gen2.
I believe we'd see more performance out of a Samsung 961 NVMe drive if there was a 10Gb/s bus as the SATA drive is limited to 6Gb/s already and a 961 would max out a 10Gb/s bus on sustained reads (and I assume Zen2 is more than powerful enough to decompress data fast enough to not limit the load speeds)
shawn murray they dropped the ball on usb bandwidth while simultaneously limiting our options using proprietary nvme cards
Or of course the Microsoft's proprietary SSD solution. That should be limited by the USB 3.1 Gen 1 Interface.

And huge congratulations on the 1M, DF. Proud to say I've been watching for a little over 5 years.
The main reason the external NVMe and SATA SSDs are about the same speed is due to the 625MB/s bandwidth constraint on the USB ports.
The fact that Xbox cheaped out on usb bandwidth on top of using a proprietary nvme storage... pro consumer huh
@Kevin Smith True, but "no noticeable difference" only applies to backcomp games since internal SSD and expansion card work just like normal NVMe SSD if games is not using any advanced features.
