Part three of probably four, a little shorter this time. I had an easy plan for the handle and it just wasn't cutting it. SO, making a handle from scratch! While I'm at it, let's feature creep some more and just carve in all the designs I wasn't supposed to do!
Using my Dad's bandsaw, my chopsaw, table saw, files, draw knife, pocket knife, dremel tool, some rifler files, chisels, belt grinder, and pretty much ever other tool... I made a custom shaped handle for the Leviathan axe from God of War.
Carving in the knotwork and dragon head was super fun actually, I'm definitely going to be doing some more carving in the future. Perhaps a few knife handles will have to be embellished.

A little tip I learned years ago doing cabinet work. If you have a little bit of filler you can probably hide it with gel stain, but when you have to use a lot that don’t work. You can apply a thin coat of tan latex paint and let it set for a day. Then a very light sanding and apply your stain. You would be surprised at the repairs this will hide.

WOW that looks fantastic. I love your idea for inlaying brass like that - it looks really good, and seems like an intentional artistic flourish rather than a compensation for defects in the wood. Your carved design is stunning as well. Can't wait to see part 4!

Whoaaa, that is gorgeous. Your fine art skills are really shining through here. It's also cool to see the wood turn to a deep warm brown.

Yeah it really is. This piece came from a tree that was in my folks’ backyard for 20 some years.
The house I’m in now had the biggest Ash I’ve ever seen in the back, four trunks easily 2 feet+ in diameter each... had to get taken down.

Doing the repair with teh brass inlays reminds me of the Japanese art of repairing and highlighting the repair - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kintsugi
Loving your videos, found you via the Frankenstien Anvil video and then onto your axe build - very enjoyable and nice commentary and content thank you

Hey! I had a question. What kind of bit are you using the engrave the lines with from 7:54 onwards? I'm building this and I'm having trouble finding a bit that makes neat lines that are small but deep! Thanks in advance it came out great!

    • @BennettTheSmith

That one is a harbor freight diamond rotary bit. The end is a long cone. I was using it at an angle, so it kinda naturally makes a straight line, if that makes sense.
I was sorta switching back and forth to see what worked well. I’d say that one and the 1/32” ball end were the best for details. I used some larger ball ends to clear out bigger areas, as well as some flat ended carbide burrs (I think) to flatten out the larger areas around the mouth and head.
Finishing with rifler files goes a LONG way to cleaning up the curves and tool marks in the lines, btw.
