Sonic Unleashed (HD) - Empire City town hub (Framerate comparison)

- The one "level" in Unleashed with the worst consistent framerate. How does it look across consoles and generations?
Fun fact: PS3 framerate is so bad, you need to employ GoldenEye 007 speedrun strats to avoid a headache.
I'm not doing more comparisons. It's annoying enough doing just one.
"Mommy why does this funny-looking dog keep running in circles"
"Let him be wild, dear, now finish your hotdog and go home."
“He is testing performance, sweety.”
"That's sonic the hedgehog dear, he's just watched too much teen wolf."
Sonic the Warehog: I gotta be careful who sees me like this.
Also Sonic: *Wanders the streets making no attempt to hide while literally no one is afraid of him.*

It feels cursed for Empire City to run smoothly.
Ah yes. A Powerpoint hub in the game, especially on PS3. Also, in the 360 version, there also seems to be a blur when Sonic moves.
There always was a blur when Sonic moves. Good catch!
*insert blue blur joke
I think the PS3 version is better than the Xbox 360 because some areas like Holoska manage to maintain a consistency between 50 to 60fps and it's really good to play.
But yes, the Xbox Series X is the way to go, locked 60fps even in the hubs.
It’s a motion blur trick they use to make motion look smoother, at the usual locked 30fps it looks good and during combat it’s lovely, but when the game slows down on 360 the blur looks atrocious due to the lower framerate, I don’t know exactly why though. On PS3 I think the blur was reduced in intensity because of the hardware differences, as it’s definitely still there on PS3 but way less horrible at low fps, it could also be they just changed the technique so it’s less seriously impacted by lower framerates but it looks like a much weaker effect to me. You can see the blur too on Xbox One & Series, it looks really good at a higher framerate.
Well the ps2 and wii have powerpoint hub worlds but the ps3 and 360 dosen't, but anyways, i only have this game on ps3 and i have to say that the framerate is awful but mostly on the empire city hub world day and night, skyscraper scamper day, jungle joyride day, and eggmanland the framerate gets atrocious.
Seeing this hub in 60fps feels illegal
Sonic Unleashed was too ahead of it's time! It still looks better than a lot of games today.
Yeah, really ahead of its time, unfortunately, critics were bad against Unleashed, I can understand because of night levels even though, the game is overall a great game. A bad fame injustifed
@@zenar30 Hated most likely because it was right after Sonic 06
@@zenar30 even though it was hated, u can search any games rate page, the "press" rating its always gonna be bad (nothing new), but the players rating are always supportive.
I don't remember what page was but the press rating was something like 6.1 and the audience rating was like +8.4
Tlou part I in that same page, the press rating was like 8.7, and the audience rating was like 6.1
"Hating" is relative, the only ones that can truly give an opinion are the people who really cares about the saga and the game, i ve played many sonic games, and by far, this is one of the best, if it is not the best
@@Gr3yF4ace For me, Frontiers is the best Sonic game now :P
ohhhhhhhh my god
i think i might buy a series x/s just to experience this game in 60fps
Same
Me too
Not to be a buzzkill but Sonic Unleashed is better off capped at 30 fps. The FPS Boost feature is awesome and all but it introduces some visual/animation glitches; like the drill from the Egg Dragoon boss fight and the recoil animation from Super Sonic. These are some that I stumbled upon with normal gameplay and it throws you off. For some new casual players, those glitches will may or may not break their immersion.
Sonic Generations with 60 fps has this instant-death glitch on the zipline shortcut with Modern Sonic on Chemical Plant; and on Speed Highway with Modern Sonic the fixed camera angles are messed up.
@@nicholaschavez5006 Regarding Unleashed those are some hell of nitpicks
@@rac1equalsbestgame853 How are those nitpicks? The Egg Dragoon glitch will literally make anyone do a double-take on what happened to the animation, and the physics with Super Sonic are broken 'cause of the 60fps.
It cannot be understated just how well this game cleans up
Xbox Series X version is so pleasing to look at. I'm glad this game is getting the love it deserves.
I don't know if the fact the optimization was so bad it took a console generation to make the game run smoothly is impressive or incredibly disappointing
From what I heard sonic team said fuck it and did their damndest just to make this game look good after the mess 06 was long story short sonic team was too ambitious
@@ilikeeverything3699 Gotta be honest Im so glad they did. The framerate never bothered me one bit and seeing graphics like that in 2008 was a huge wake up call to what hardware could do now... I remember just always being shocked no matter how many times i played it. Such a HUGE difference coming from the Dreamcast/Gamecube Sonic's to this.. Honestly it felt like playing a dream
WHAT HI ARI

Paws! We meet again
disappointing
It took 2 console generations just for unleashed to run at 60 fps that just shows how dedicated sega was at the time
Or it was just SEVERELY un-optimized for 360 and PS3.
@@ToonyTails not to mention its done through emulation. it would 100% would've been able to be run at 60fps with a res boost on the xbox one if ported
...you mean it was poorly optimized??
GTA IV and Sonic Unleashed both
dude this game is one of the poorest cases of bad optimisation in gaming, sonics model alone is nearly 20,000 fucking polygons
finally it's no longer a power point presentation
i remember when this game first came out.. i was in elementary school at the time and begged my dad to get me it and he did. i love this game with all my heart and it will always be the best sonic game imo so im extremely happy they gave it the fps boost on the newer systems
The ps3 version looks like a youtube video from 2008
sad how shitty it ran on the PS3, god i know it was satisfying running it on the series X 😭
At the time of release the only thing the PlayStation 3 version did better was having an unlocked frame rate but even then the game almost never ran at 60 frames per second
@@GenerationZ313 yeah. it hardly reached 60, holoska day being the exception tho.
I think the PS3 version is better than the Xbox 360 because some areas like Holoska manage to maintain a consistency between 50 to 60fps and it's really feels good to play.
But yes, the Xbox Series X is the way to go, locked 60fps even in the hubs.
Gotta go smooth.
1:59 I'm noticing that the buildings in the distance are improperly lit and that's got me wondering if the lighting got broken anywhere else in the game
Edit: Seems to be fixed now
No it does that in all versions. It depends where you stand and angle the camera. You can make entire buildings disappear.
there's a werehog mission in this hub stage where it's filled with enemies. and the weird part is that the frame rate is at the 60s in that specific mission. So I wonder what makes it slowdown so much.
Videos like this make me think "How on earth did Xbox lose the console wars?"
What makes you think they lost? They changed the gaming with xonex and xseries consoles
A reminder that ps5 users can only play the ps3 version through streaming
Which is the exact same version as the ps3 only you now migth have imput lag and depends on your internet conection

-1 point for ps5
Truly, the power of the PS3's Cell Processor knows no bounds.
Knows a bound called PPU. SPUs are just a might, they were never used for the vast majority of games.
I was like 13 or so when my dad got me this game and I remember being truly let down by its framerate, even if by then I didn't know what that term actually meant. But I remember finding the wolf stages too laggy to be enjoyable, whereas I had lots of fun with normal Sonic. I wish this game had been better optimized at the time... I mean, I enjoyed it and spent my time with it, but even a kid like I was could notice that poor optimization.
I don't remember the PS3 and Xbox 360 version being this laggy 😮
PS3 version has always been that bad, whether disc or digital. 360, I've seen a video from a month after launch where it's just as laggy.
Uhh I do since I was younger and still now for my 360 but not Xbox one X
The PS3 seems to run less than 24fps, meanwhile the X360 runs somewhere between 24 and 30fps. The Xbox One runs at a stable 30fps+ and the Series X/S are the definitive ways to play it
RIP to all the Sonic Unleashed fans who passed away before experiencing this game in 60 FPS.
Why did Empire City run so poorly on these older consoles?
Seeing sonic run like a dog at 60fps had never felt better
THIS GAME is LEGENDARY.
I find it hilarious how the most simple hub runs the worst. It's literally a circle with like no foliage why does it lag so much lmfao
I only have the ps3 version and it runs terrible :c
its funny because they prioritized the playstation version of sonic games in this era from my understanding but it runs better on xbox (or I may be misremembering stuff and this was sonic 06 only, I could be wrong if i am lmk)
06 was developed for PS3 and ported to 360. I can't find any info on Unleashed.
The game is now perfect, but unfortunately I'll never buy a Xbox Series just for Sonic Unleashed :(
I really hope they do something with the PS5. I’m not ready to drop another $600 for JUST Sonic.
It needs a resolution boost since, as I recall, it displays stages lower than 720p
@@mlpfimguy It already has a 4K, like any other Xbox game through backwards compatibility.
@@skape924 The higher resolution is only applied to 'Xbox One X enhanced' games and not EVERY backwards compatible game. Unleashed only has the fps patch and is not 'Xbox One X enhanced.' This means that the game will only output at the original resolution. Look up any '4k' Sonic Unleashed video and you'll notice that it's actually 'upscaled 4k,' which means that the pixels are stretched to suit 4k. This is not true 4k.
Buy it for Game Pass Ultimate, it has amazing Games like Forza Horizon 4 and 5, Minecraft, all the Halo and Gears of War Games, Mortal Kombat 11 and Batman Arkham Knight. With Game Pass Ultimate it also allows you to play a ton of EA Games like Jedi Fallen Order, Fifa and more
0:06 Embarrassing how bad the frame rate is
Xbox gave Sonic Unleashed a new lease on life now.
Im replaying it on Series X with FPS, Boost...its another level
I remember when i played this game in 360 it was 60/90 frame it was amazing 🤩
I tried this game on my ps3 a few minutes ago and literally had to turn off the console and look for gameplay because the framerate is so goddamn low i assumed something was wrong with my console!
Quite ironic for ps3 to run quite a bit worse than xbox 360 despite ps3 being more powerful than 360. But oh well
FPS were unlocked from 30, for some reason
@@lectiasio3225 ps3 was notoriously difficult to develop games on and especially to optimize in using it's full capability, you can see the difference in later ps3 titles that actually are optimized to the console.
The PS3 looks like it's struggling to process the game lol
I have the PS3 version and it runs pretty bad in this hub world specifically. The FPS looks like 10 frames per second which is not good at all. I guess this proves that Unleashed was ported from the 360 version.
I seriously don’t know why people love the ps3 version more than the 360 , I mean the 360 version had a better frame rate and faster loading times !
Finally, a reason why the PS3 is bad
this is the only time where i'm sad for owning a PS3
Ps3 Version sucks
I knew the ps3 version was worse when it came to fps
Is it me or shadows and texture qualities are higher on series?
Ok but the piss filter in the xbox version bothers me
I was playing on my 360 recently and I swear it runs so much worse than i remember
The Mandela effect. We didn’t really care about how good these games looked when we were younger.
The PS3 version looks great for me.
Hmm yes but what about ps5 I mean it probably doesn’t count because it’s on PS network but yes I am curious
You mean ps now which is really slow and choppy
How did you manage to make it run so good on xbox one? On mine it runs exactly like the 360.
I just played it. I only had the OG Xbox One so it should've been the worst performing of the post-360 consoles.
@@Groudon0199 I have the og too. If I do remember correctly, it lagged on the first werehog level, when I was fighting with a lot of monsters. I didn't test any more werehog levels after that. I had higher expectations for a console that's a lot more powerful than the last.
On Xbox 360 in Sonic Unleashed 18-30 FPS
*24-30 fps
Where is PS 5?
PS3 games on PS Now / PS Plus Premium can only be streamed. I never tried, but from what I can find online the performance would be identical to running the game on a PS3.
Is Xbox series x or emulation(high end pc) better?
Skimming through the Sonic speedrunning server, RPCS3 is the best emulator option if you have a high end PC and a top-of-the-line CPU. Series X and S can run the game at an almost constant 60fps but the resolution is only 720p.
For resolution, RPCS3. For performance, Series X|S.
(my PC isn't good enough to run anything in RPCS3; I'd suggest asking on one of the emulator videos for a more definitive answer)
@@Groudon0199 nah xenia better than rpcs3
ayy its viable to play on my xbox one
Joder pero que bien se ve en xbox one

Xbox One S or X?
OG Xbox One, which should be identical to One S.
