As an ex inmate from 2008-2011. I can confirm this is a thing. Not quite sure about the phone model though, never asked. You catch an additional escape charge and possession of an unauthorized tool added to what ever your already in for if you get caught with them. Typically only shot callers had them. Also to add, two of the maximum security facilities I stayed at, never used any fancy devices for finding things.
MAXIMUM SECURITY????

@@finnoboy6506 there are some things you just dont need to know.
US Prison security is not as great as you'd think except for maybe Angola Louisiana, ive been there (not as an imate, but i have family that worked there) That place is tight, surrounded by a river on 3 sides out of 4, only 2 ways in and 2 ways out. You cant leave that place with an enclosed trailer without them looking in it first. They likely screen those that come to see the angola rodeo but i dont know for sure.

There's another market for these phones. It's easy to get fixated on the up the butt, prison scenario. But they can also be incredibly useful in Close Protection and Personal Security scenarios. I found one of these in a box of old phones that I was given for recycling. Later I was told that some of these phones were actually from the local jail. The one I have looks slimmer than this one. My guess is that you just 1) wanted to use the EM meter again. 2) wanted to build a "janky" faraday cage, 3) were hungry for cantalope and don't care what said fruit is designed to represent in your testing, or 4) all of the above. I'm going with 4.
The fact that Linus had to explain how the button navigation worked. And I was just like oooh neat. *Memory unlocked*
My last dumb phone was probably like 12 years ago. This would be pretty sick for pocket texting cause it's so small. You were a real cool kid if you could text under your desk at school, one handed without looking at the screen. Which is impossible nowadays because touchscreens don't have any positional feedback by design.
I miss being able to use a phone by sheer muscle memory without having to look at the screen.
I can vouch against you on this, If you are good enough predictive text will save you. I have multiple videos of me staring my friends dead in the eye talking to them while I reply text prefect messages. It kinda freaked them out. If you don't believe me irdc, just pointing out it is possible.
Back then I could even text in Chinese without looking at the screen, by memorizing the ideograph candidate lists of frequently used words. But the teacher basically sees everything under your desk though... I realized it when I stood behind the lecturing desk for the first time.
I was so comfortable with T9 texting for this reason, but I never held out hope! I use an android phone with the Google default keyboard, which supports swipe typing. I've had so much practice now that I can legitimately type without looking at my screen simply by swiping through all of the letters. The only downside is that every few weeks it's ability to figure out words seems to tank since *it's claimed* that it uses some machine learning to help assist people with slightly different swipe styles.

Any old cellphone can make emergency calls even if it's not activated. It's the law. You could also buy any pre-paid phone, burner phone, etc, with no account and still make emergency calls. Yess if Linus does a mini series on prisoner technology that would be dope 🤣
We never saw any of these when I worked as a Transportation Sergeant for a prison work-release program, but we would have inmates try to smuggle in phones and stuff in the dumbest possible ways. Most of them are not smart. We had an individual walk off his job site at a restaurant and go into Walmart, buy a bag of grapes and a prepaid cell phone, but somehow forgot to throw away the receipt. Claimed a coworker went and got him grapes. Found the receipt in the van during shakedown, noticed it had TWO cell phones on it. Found both of them stashed in the interior back seat panels.
Some are smart, however. One of our construction inmates had one of those big styrofoam insulated thermos water jug things, hollowed out some of the insulation and had a phone neatly nestled into it. Prison makes you innovative lol

or you know, just turn it off?
It's literally a phone designed to put up your ass and smuggle into a prison, there's nothing suspicious here, only obvious
@@ademiravdic But then they'd lose the vibrating feature. Given the mode of transportation, I feel like this may be stashed in a few prison purses.
on a phone *designed* to be smuggled into prison, you find the voice changing feature to be the thing that's suspicious? got a real sherlock phones here.
Personal phones in prison are for privacy, if you’re spending big bucks for one it’s because you have serious and very illegal business to conduct on the outside and can’t use the prison phones which are monitored. So while the voice changer is kind of niche, it could be useful for someone who is worried about their associates being wire tapped and then being recognized. The other option is it’s for someone truly messed up who wants to make threatening phone calls against people or entities they may hold a grudge against. You can imagine the things someone like Manson or another deranged psycho would use such a feature for.

No, I clearly remember this tiny Cellphone was about half the width and length of my Nokia with Pinpoint small keys that seemed to be almost unusable with fingers. If I had to guess I'd say it measured 70 x 30 x 25 mm. Design language boring like the Zanko T1 shown here. I tried to find it in google, but there's nothing that rings my memory. I think it was some grey import from Japan. He was a rich tech enthusiast and very proud of it, so I assume it was quite expensive.
@@genius1a there was a mitsubishi one that was along those lines. Like a slimmed down version of the old Sony 'Mars bar'.
@@Gainn Oh, yes, the design of the Sony "Mars Bar" rings my memory bell ! Very similar key to body ratio and also the other aspect ratios. But of course not from Sony and smaller, maybe the Mitsubishi you suggested. Sadly I found no pictures about that.
6:20 Linus makes the half-life sprint sound
I have an even smaller one. But i always assumed you needed a bluetooth handset to really use it properly. But! It displays 4 16-character lines of text at once.
Watching Linus get excited about a phone that easily fits in his hand was actually entertaining.
and he still drops it
@@FurryMetalFerretVT That's because the more excited he is about something the more likely he is to drop it.
no, it's not that it fits in his HAND that he likes it.........

oh god new series...PRISON TECH TIPS!!
14:04 best out of context pic I have seen in a while.
I’ve actually spent a little time in prison, I was caught with mdma when I was much younger, and this really made me laugh. I saw first hand the crazy lengths some of the guys would go to just to have a mobile phone.
Fun fact, as long you behaved well, they’d give you a cell with a pay phone in anyway haha, so this solution is only for the truly dedicated delinquent!
Those pay phones are absolutely insanely expensive to use
It's not the same everywhere dude...
Also they can monitor those calls.
im sure this is not the case for every prison out there mate!
@@dotech4128 to be fair, people are paying 500-1000 bucks for this too
4:36 In terms of Linus dropping things, this is a top tier drop.
time for an LTT/Larry Lawton crossover. I don't know what for, but why not! He does amazing work and the more people know about his movement, the better!
I would guess that, if smuggled phones were going to be detected, it wouldn't be with an EMF meter. It would be with a cell site simulator or similar system that detects cellular devices specifically. If it can ring, then it's connecting to the network and could also connect to a cell site simulator.
Not to mention the obvious solution of turning it off before inserting it into your... cavity.
Not gonna lie, if you had a similarly portable way of storing (without self-discharge) or generating power, this could make for a really nifty bug-out-kit item.
I mean it's a tiny dumbphone with like 0.75wh battery. You can probably charge it with like 0.5w solar panel. 😛
Yeah i did some calculations and i am fairly confident that you could fit big enough solar panel to charge this in a wallet. That's really tiny.🙂
Self-discharge a la Samsung?
@@shinyhappyrem8728 More like just general self-discharge of any battery, I'm talking like extreme doomsday prep where you'd want something that'll keep for years. Just looked it up and seems non-rechargable lithium batteries have a the longest shelf life with about 12 years. But yeah, like mentioned by nebulous, a small solar panel would probably be the smartest solution.
@@LordHonkInc It seems like a mechanical, hand cranked generator might be a better choice? This wouldn't need much power and you'd be able to charge the phone regardless if you can get out side or not. Might even be able to relatively simply DIY a generator for this.

I reminded of an old SNL skit about super tiny cell phones.
Glad to see Taran hasn't changed a bit since the last time I saw him on camera. Keep up the good work buddy!
I was really hoping Linus would find an employee desperate enough to do it for a bonus, but then just not actually have them go through it, but reward them anyway for being so brave.
As funny as that would be, I could also see it turning into a case of sexual harassment.
@@ventilate4267 depends on how you went about it.
LTT employee: "Hey honey, guess what - I just got a bonus from Linus himself!"
Honey: "Well done! What was it for?"
LTT employee: "Oh... Er... Being *brave*."
Or as Apple would call it, *COURAGE*.
I was hoping Dennis
That would definitely be a lawsuit for asking employees to put something up their butt
If your phone has any service at all inside the Faraday cage, it's not doing its job. Every screen room and Faraday cage box I've used, I've tried cell phones, and they completely lose service. Excellent video as usual though. Thanks.
They need a fart ring tone, that way if the phone goes off when it's been hooped (friend went to prison,) then it just seems like the person ripping some farts.
I'm guessing the cable is small enough, they could put it in the "suitcase" along with the phone. That's what Larry Lawton referred to the container used to hide stuff they weren't supposed to have. Like drugs or even blades. But in the end, all of this doesn't matter because if they really think you're hiding something. An X-Ray is going to catch it. Remember the toy car in Jackass?
Prison wallet
if you own a legal device that uses microusb to charge then you wont have to hide the charger and cable.
@@A.Martin did you not watch the video?
@@TheOmegaRiddler of course I did, and the phone uses microusb to charge, but in low security prisons you might be able to own other types of devices that can run off microusb and so you may not need to hide the charger as you would be allowed to own a charger.
