Hi everyone! The W&N Lemon Yellow PY53 might be useful for a desert landscape. Despite being pale, PY53 is somewhat strong for the brownish-yellows of deserts, but its murkiness and softness are reminiscent of the ‘feel’ of desert yellows.

Nice to see all these yellows side by side. I still don't think I could give up my Rembrandt Cadmium Yellow Lemon but if I had to then the PY175 looks like a good option. Thanks for sharing 🙏

Aww thank you, if you have time - could you use it in your next video so I can see what it’s like? 😊

this was awesome to watch, thank you! i've been eyeing the holbein PY175 myself as a non-toxic alternative to my lemon yellows. personally my ride or die lemon yellow is rembrandt's cadmium lemon yellow PY35. probably not what you'd like since it could be rather opaque as with most cadmiums but it's definitely the brightest/cleanest lemon yellow i've used.

Hey thank you for watching the video, honestly I’m shocked at how nice the PY175 actually is. It’s definitely become my favourite, out of the ones I have anyway. I’ll have to check out some of the others that have been mentioned.

Such a great video!!! Love watercolor comparisons like this. Yes you are right the Holbein color is beautiful, i think Im gotta check it out...The Daniel Smith Lemon Yellow is PY175 as well and its beautiful, I also really like Mission Golds PY138 from their 34 Pure pIgment set-i cant spell the name (but it starts with a Q) since I dont have the tube on me right now- but both of those colors are really pretty cool yellows. Anyway Id def love to see you make a video comparing the warms and cools of all your colors. Great video, thanks for sharing💜❤💙

Awww thank you for watching the video! Oh I’ll have to check out them others (apart from the mission gold one as they are so expensive to buy).
I plan on uploading the mixing to make a green next week, maybe Wednesday or Saturday.

This was really interesting to see. I was surprised at how opaque-ish most of the yellows were! I guess I’ve always assumed cadmium was opaque, but others much less so. My cool yellows are PY3 (DS,DaVinci and Q) and they are okay, but recently I purchased w&n PY 154 and 175, which I like much better. They seem to have more personality somehow. It will be interesting to see your planned upcoming comparisons!

Aww thank you for watching the video, I agree with you - I was surprised at how opaque they all are compared to the PY175 (which is now my favourite cool yellow).
I plan on uploading the green mixes next week now 😊

You seem to have hit on a hue that several YT channels are focusing on presently :)… eg. @ eve bolt-art & cats mentioned that Jackson’s has just published an article ( to read on their site) which describes the characteristics of all the pigments used to make all the yellows available.

Oh really lol, I didn’t even realise - I’ll have to check out the Jackson’s article and the other channels. It’s definitely not like me to get in a trend, I’m usually behind the times with things 🤣🤣

The cad yellow qr looks the coolest?

  • @nickelazoyellow7360

I think this has a lot to do with the pigments. For example, cadmiums are always going to be opague. But that Holbein is amazing and I'm going to look into buying a tube!

Aww thank you for watching the video. Yes the Holbein is amazing and if I’m honest, it’s definitely worth getting, it’s a very clean yellow. I’ve bought more Holbein paints recently and they are gorgeous. 😊

Actually, Winsor Lemon in the W&N professional line is PY175. I know you can get WN easily in the UK. Mijello Mission Gold PY138 is very transparent, as is Rembrandt Transparent Yellow PY128. Those two are a smidge warmer, but just a little. You get PY3 from every manufacturer because it is so inexpensive. Nice to see the comparisons all together.

Meant to add the name of Mission Gold PY138 - Quinophthalone Yellow Light. Daniel Smith has that pigment too, but they say theirs is semi opaque, although many things they say are semi opaque are pretty transparent in use.

Hey sorry for the late response, I double checked the W&N professional half half pan and it definitely says PY53 for the lemon yellow.
Thank you fir the other recommendations, I might have to add more to my pallets 🤣

@@TammyNewmanArt yes, the Lemon Yellow is PY53. But their Winsor Lemon is PY175. Confusing for them to have two lemons, but they do.

Apologies, I’m just getting used to editing and I didn’t realise the music was so loud. I’ve played around with the editing software and realised I was reducing the volume incorrectly. Hopefully in future videos this won’t be a problem 😊
