Todays episode of Irrepressible: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Resilience is a World Suicide Prevention Day special with someone I have known most of my life, Devon Brown.
Despite knowing Devon for so long, I had no idea of the things that Devon has been through.
Devon grew up with his mum who had a lifelong struggle with depression. When Devon was just 5 years old, his mum became a full time carer to his niece who was physically and mentally disabled. When Devon was a young man he found out the news that his mum had died by suicide. A short time later, his niece died too.
Devon has still managed to carve out a life that he his both grateful for and happy with, even after finding out that one of his daughters has a disability.
I was honestly left a little speechless throughout this whole conversation, particularly because I have always known Devon to be this big tough happy guy.... The thing is with Devon, is that he is those things, despite everything.
Devon says it as he sees it throughout the whole interview and I am grateful for that. Some of the ways he shares of how he gets by and how he views things may seem controversial to some, he admits that himself, but when you hear his story and see the life he has, it's impossible to argue.
Ive changed some of my views after this interview and it has cemented the idea that we all deal with things differently, there is no correct way to do things.
