- If Mr. Magoo can’t see anything, does that mean he can’t see how bad this movie is, either?
Originally aired on May 30, 2012
Mr. Magoo is a 1997 American comedy film directed by Hong Kong film veteran Stanley Tong (his sole English language film) and written by Pat Proft and Tom Sherohman. A live-action film adaptation of UPA's cartoon of the same name, it was produced by Walt Disney Pictures, and starred Leslie Nielsen as the title character, alongside Kelly Lynch, Matt Keeslar, Nick Chinlund, Stephen Tobolowsky, Ernie Hudson, Jennifer Garner and Malcolm McDowell.

"This was during Disney's run of horrible live action movies."
Aged like fine wine.
Lol now it's horrible live action reboots of classic animated films.
Has Disney EVER made good live-action movies?
Mary Poppins + Bedknobs and Broomsticks: Are we a joke to you?
@@joshslater2426 Mary Poppins never saw, but it had animated features in it. Bedknobs and Broomsticks never heard of. Let me word it like this. Did Disney ever have made good live action films AFTER the 50's (besides Homeward Bound?)
I always thought of Mr. Magoo as an elderly Elmer Fudd who got over his speech impediment, retired from hunting and grew more blind over time
In that case his luck really turned around, he went from incompetent Hunter who couldn't shoot a rabbit to save his life, now he's even older and in worse physical condition but makes it out okay every single time.
Wouldn't he be Elder Fudd then
"Delicious, yummy blood"
That explains it. Mr. Magoo wasn't actually blind, at all; he was a vampire, and the sun was just constantly in his eyes!

I love Leslie Nielsen. This may not have been his best movie, but he makes me laugh no matter what. We miss you, dude!
Edit: Holy crap, this movie is on Disney Plus!
The fucking ending of this review. It is GENIUS.
"oh what do we have here? its a pitchfork with your name on it; ere let me give it back too ya."

the ending was awesome, poor poor Nostalgia Critic, "would a crazy man strangle an orphan girl because he thinks shes queen of the moon people" *punch* "yes, yes he would" i cant stop laughing

Is the “queen of the moon people” a reference to something?

16:15 I would call that 'jumping the shark' but I'd be insulting the term.
The line the wedding “It wouldn’t last-I’ve never loved you!” Actually made me laugh. Admittedly I didn’t have to sit through the whole movie to get there, but I did think that was funny.
12:06 Aaand that's how Mr. Eggplant turned into Dr. Eggman.
You know... that makes no sense but at the same time it as well might.
goo goo ga joob
This movie is so stupid... I watched it a lot as a child but thankfully our VHS tape got swallowed by the VCR. Guess it was doing us a favour.
Alexandria Thorne You know a movie is bad when the thing you're using to play it gains sentient life for only the purpose of destroying it.
I remember putting it on for the simple reason we didn't have that many movies. It hasn't grown on me since... lol
Shanethefilmmaker In that case... well done, Mr. Magoo. Well done.
VCR :PUT THAT COOKIE- er I mean VHS DOWN!!! *chomp chomp*
Klint Karas vhs make me strong
The thing is, actors gotta make money, it's a job. You can't sit and wait around for a good movie, especially when so few good movies come out per year. Then there's the fact that some movies with great concepts get ruined due to poor execution anyway. 😣💦
If there’s one nice thing you can say about this move, it’s that Leslie Nielsen was the best choice to play Mr. Magoo. Yes it’s a horrible screenplay but Leslie Nielsen can make even the worst screenplay a little better. Not a lot, but a little.
Dude, your Letterman is awesome.
When he did that i just laughed

6:18 Actually Mr. Magoo does preformed in the cartoons. Especially in the TV specials. The great example would be his acting of Scrooge in the Christmas Carol special. and the best part was that Mr. Magoo is very good at being Scrooge.
You mean Scrooge?
8:39 Marvel, please sue something.

Mr. Magoo actually DOES sing in "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol".
If Magoo is so rich, why doesn't he get eye surgery?
You know theres a new Mr.Magoo animated movie?
Im just going to leave this here... if you want to touch it
I think an animated version should be better, because the slapstick wouldn't be as limited. Then again, that depends on what the creators can do.
As the ZZ Top would say: "I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole"
An animated movie? What's it called.
@@KyrstOak I have absolutely no clue it was one of those movies that i can definitely say i saw but i can just remember very specific timy things
@@elcolo4405 Bummer. I tried looking it up, but all that came up was Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol, which aired in 1962.
i would pay for a nostalgia critic talk show
Ah, now I understand why Garner enjoyed beating up a blind guy in Daredevil.
And considering Disney has owned Marvel for many years by the time that series was released, this movie also explains why Disney only cares about their animation facilities or the theme parks when they talk about the 1990's.
Mr. Magoo was not blind He is nearsighted.
is malcom mcdowell forced to do shitty movies because if he doesnt do them, theyre gonna put him in a straight jacked and force his eyelids open?

The bit about the wind machine at the opera house had me in tears.

Am I the only one who misses these types of jokes in modern day Nostalgia Critic episodes?
I grew up with the Christmas Carol version so I just assumed he was clumsy. During the show he doesn’t have sight problems. It makes sense why he’d touch the Ghost of Christmas Future’s robe though
1:06 *_"This was during their especially bad run of horrible live action movies…"_* And whaddaya know, they're now doing it again, and every other company is following suit, so now there should be a new term: *_"DISNEY CAN'T LEARN SHIT!"_*

Fun fact: Back in 1993, Steven Spielberg was trying to get the rights to many cartoons to adapt into live action. (Including The Flintstones and Casper.) But he also attempted to get the rights to Inspector Gadget and Mr. Magoo before Disney got a hold of them around 1995/1996. And he apparently wanted Danny DeVito for the title role. Shame we're not in that timeline. 😞
"doug and rob waker"
Phonetic spelling
15:13 was this the original "YOU ARE GOING TO BRAZIL!"?
Mmmario you are going to Brazil. 😂
Does anyone else think cartoon Magoo looks like Palpatine? They really should have gotten Ian McDiarmid for this part(joking, I don't want him to have to suffer through this..)
I found the show's idea of a blind guy who gets into a lot of shenanigans without even realizing it amusing, but I was always happy that it all worked out for him in the end.
I actually love this movie. It's a way better Inspector Gadget movie than the Inspector Gadget movie. Think about it, The Main Character bumbles into something way over his head, while the crime is taken care of behind the scenes, or indirectly by the Main Character.
17:26 You can hear a pen drop.
What I can't believe is the movie was directed by Stanley Tong who directed Jackie Chan movies... like some of the really good ones: Supercop, First Strike, Rumble in the Bronx
That David Letterman Show parody was so spot on.
"I guess Disney finds it funny when women are hurt"
Why wouldn't it be? You think just because they're women they're immune to slapstick? That only furthers the 'women can't be funny' stereotype.
Nate Well, I don't mean seriously hurt, more like a prat fall or 'harmless' physical comedy, nothing that would lead to serious injury. But this isn't the only time I've seen him complain about it, which leads me to think that he may have a double standard when it comes to slapstick between men and women.
Nate I agree
Are you being serious right now.
You can't be trying to turn this random line about a lame scene into a gender thing, you just can't.
You're all giant morons. Get those sticks out of your asses.
Most stereotypes are based on fact.
Mr. Critic, I believe you skipped a line. don't worry I got you. what is with this movie and defacing animal corpeses?
I think Mr. Magoo is funny... maybe that's just cause I loved him as a kid.
seam
Weak sense of humor
KidSnivy96 Probably because I was a child when I first watched him. Like I said.
Fun fact: the composer for this movie Michael Tavera is responsible for one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever, used in the Land Before Time sequels.
16:12 Actually, it would be kinda cool to make a raft that doubles as a weak glider, in case you go off a waterfall... :P
Interesting that Ernie Hudson did this around the time he was on OZ, my favorite show of all time.
Very funny animated fish and chicken reacting to mr magoo from Disney can’t stop laughing 😂
"Wait, Warner Bros. or Disney? Disney. Nooooooo!"
3 years later the joke is reversed.
This year, Mr Magoo Reboot got promoted in Boomerang.
Nah, I still prefer WB over another averange Disney Studio film.
@The Eyes Of A True Demon- Anomaly Productions Agreed! I've never watched the Disney Live-Action remakes, but the originals are fine!
Also, knowing Disney bought out Marvel, Star Wars, and now 20th Century Fox, makes me respect them even less!
So did Doug spell his and Rob's last name wrong on purpose? I'm inclined to say yes, as it appears 3 times, though I'm not sure what the joke is.
16:35 that was actually from a reissue of the film that came about because people who were visually impaired actually publicly complained about the film.
I think the comedy of Mr. Magoo comes from the situations he’s in. In his perspective, you don’t know what’s gonna happen, and yet the bad things you think are gonna happen, don’t. The joke is that usually someone blind would get hurt in these wacky situations. (No offence to blind people)
That’s exactly where the comedy comes
I remember the time of innocence, when I was a kid and actually loved this movie.
He accidentally cuts a live electrical wire? Kinda dark, don't you think?
8:13 RIP Fish.
Not even Leslie Nielsen can save this movie.
Rest in peace Leslie Neilsen and Jim Backus.
7:18 Why would they add that? It's so random.
What do got against the candle?
13:45 OH THIS MOVIE! I remember the sauna and the skii bike!
6:52 okay that part was legit funny
4:54 my exact reaction when I saw Ernie Hudson.
10:37 to 10:45 oh look hes doing the Chicken Dance
Wow.. after seeing this review, I think I finally get Nostalgia Critic. Like the movies he reviews, some are good, some are bad, some are just okay even though there was obvious effort put in... but then you find that one. And it is AMAZING, in part because you didn't expect much out of it. This review has it all. I laughed at 0:16 , I cried when I was reminded Leslie Nielson died years ago.. and the mystery of what the tattoo at 13:15 is will haunt me 'til my dying day.
When I saw this in the 90s, I thought it was hilarious, but there were issues that I thought were odd even as a kid. Thank, Nostalgia Critic!
You forgot to mention the fact that this movie insulted so many visually impaired people, Disney pulled it from theaters after just 2 WEEKS.
Wow. Fucking wow, Walt.
6:53-7:03 I love this kind of joke! Gets me every time
10:35 LOL Family Guy chicken
13:15 Well, thanks to Disney+ and HD TV, i can confirm for NC's sake of trying to look at the tattoo when the video itself even if it's in HD from 2012 was blurry at the time that the tattoo Magoo that he drew really quick was in fact a frog with a cigar in his mouth wearing a black hat and holding a gun (or 2 guns if i'm wrong) with a fist on it. I think. ^^
Pepe the Frog? so Magoo is a Trumpazoid? now I really hate him!
That actually sounds quite awesome tbh - can you see that logo somewhere on the internet?
With movies like this coming out no wonder Marik from Yugioh Abridged went nuts.
I can't be the only one that heard the NC's Skype go off at the 11:38 mark, am I...? I mean you hear it loudly slightly under his voice, it's hard to miss.
R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen
lmao the back story of the fish comment though.
I always suspected that the movie version of Mr.Magoo was actually Loki in disguise. Everything makes so much sense if you accept that as a fact.
But the true question remains...can he see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
5:05 "the CIA has no jurisdiction on american soil"
...What?
Yeah that made zero sense.
Thats like saying the RAF have no jurisdiction in Britian.
Warchief1223 - The CIA is a foreign intelligence agency. They are only authorized to spy on foreign powers, at least officially. It is illegal for them to spy on Americans in America.
That's why they use the NSA for the big domestic spying scandal. Hahaha, uuugh.
The FBI is supposed to do domestic intelligence and, prior to 9/11, not share their intelligence with the CIA. But the careful division of powers has blurred a bit since then, in hopes of preventing another 9/11.
In short, they actually got that bit right.
@@bradypostma3708 Goddammit Man! Are you trying to explain something on the Internet? You crazy or what?!?!?
@@thefreakmachine - I like explaining. People will probably not read, not believe, or not care (or all three), but the best combat against misinformation is to provide accurate information. If everyone who knew things was doing their damnedest to flood the internet with the truth, maybe we wouldn't be so buried in bull all the time.
So, am I crazy? Yeah, pretty much.
Fun fact: The National Federation of the Blind also passed a resolution at its 1997 convention asking Disney to stop making a live-action *Mr. Magoo* movie.
*Guess that didn't matter to Disney*
1:42 Leslie Nielsen? Like Airplane Leslie Nielsen?1:44 Kelly Lynch? Like Drugstore Cowboy Kelly Lynch?1:53 Stephen Tobolowsky? Like Groundhog Day Stephen Tobolowsky
How many talented actors and comedians going to humiliate themselves by being in this movie?
Leslie Nielsen was willing to do this? Surely you can't be serious.
Fun fact: my mom actually sings at the Lyric Opra of Chicago!
How the hell did they Ernie Hudson to star along side the villain from the Garfield movie!?!!!!!
Mr. Magoo
Spy Hard
Repossessed
Dracula Dead and Loving It
Wrongfully Accused
Why was the 90s so cruel to Leslie Nielsen?
Because he hit it big with the triple whammy of Airplane, Police Squad and The Naked Gun Trilogy and got picked up by people wanting to capitalise on his new career as a comedian not realising that the reason he was funny in those was because he acted 100% serious whilst in ridiculous situations. I’d say the only movies in the late stages of his career that got this were sadly Scary Movie 3 and Superhero Movie the former because The Zucker’s were involved and knew how to use him and the latter because he was parodying Uncle Ben and it was just kinda funny seeing him say “don’t forget the bitches” whilst Kevin Hart listed off perks of being a superhero
And the 00s were hardly any better towards him:
2001: A Space Travesty
Scary Movie 3 & 4
An American Carol
Stan Helsing
Spanish Movie
Leslie Nielsen really had an odd career - there are not many actors that rose to such fame and prominence despite starring in so many terrible movies and so few good ones.🙈🤣
Honestly I've never seen this movie, but the cast is super talented...
"It's just one joke"
So NC is inspired by Mr Magoo.
*AVGN
*Almost all Internet reviewers.
HEY! HOW DARE YOU!
The earliest versions of Mr. Magoo were funny because it wasn't just his bad eyesight.
The initial point was that he stubbornly refused to ADMIT he needed glasses, and carried on despite clearly not being able to see. Laughing at someone for having poor eyesight is weak, Laughing at someone for stubbornly refusing to acknowledge poor eyesight, THAT's funny because I think many of us would hate to admit growing old...
4:47
Is-Is that the sneezey guy who's allergic to cats from that movie " Garfield "?!? What the hell?!? 😬
12:39 Malcolm McDowell. No...
5:06 Groundhog Day VS Ghostbusters
- When someone asks you if you're a god, you say "YES"!
- Whoa-ho-ho! Watch out for that first step! It's a doozy!
This movie is a prime example of how certain things in cartoons don’t work in live action. When a cartoon adult with poor eyesight acts like an idiot and puts himself and others in danger it’s funny, but when a real person does the same thing it comes off as insulting. There’s an innate disconnect from reality with cartoons. This is how cartoon like the Looney Tunes can get away with shooting each other in the face with guns, walking off cliffs, and getting it with cars. They're not real therefore people don't connect their action with real human behaviors. However, since live action movies take place in the real world, and have real people with disabilities doing stupid and dangerous stuff, people do connect those action with the real world and it comes off as insulting. Therefore people associate those stupid actions with real people who have similar debilities, which is how discrimination and prejudice are created.
At least Ernie Hudson went to voice a corgi in Infinity Train on Cartoon Network so yeah he's still awesome!
Teddy Furstman
That's good. I watched this and all I could think is "he deserves better"
@ 13:57 Scatman!
I dunno why, but I love it whenever NC does the late night talk show thing.
