You’re my favourite dog trainer. The information you provide has helped my dogs out an incredible amount. I plan to use your ideas to better my future dogs. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you Larry! I first found your channel 3 years ago, 6 months after I got my doberman. We train everyday, and started a obedience walking company a couple months ago... we have 12 dogs a week so far and everything is going wonderful.. thank you for the inspiration and information 🙌🏼🐺🇺🇸
It's true, there is so much information available online that's it's so overwhelming for first time dog owners! We have a four month old Rottweiler, and we did extensive research before getting her. I'm so thankful that I've found your channel this past month, I've really been applying a lot of what you do. Sasha is incredible off-leash, she needs to know where my husband and I are at all times, but when she feels too far, she comes right for us. We definitely need to work on the leave it command and out command, but so far, she is a great pup!
Love, love, love your methodology. This is what I’ve been doing-even when other trainers say it’s all wrong. My shepherds are head and tail above others so the proof is in their behavior. So glad to know I am not completely out in left field with my training
⭐️ Outline for the first 4 months: First two things Larry teaches: ⛔️ Leave it & Out Then: 💫 Recall 🎾 Lots of play 🍖 Luring with food into basics: Sit, Down, Place 🐶 While puppy provide structure to avoid bad behavior, don’t give puppy free reign when unattended 🐕 Work on exposing dogs to different environments, focus on being neutral to all things
You are so right with the Leavitt they truly understand it got my Belgian eight weeks so by the time he was nine weeks he know it thank you for all that you do for our dogs!!
I love your methods , they are so similar to how I've always brought up my dogs . I've always been proud of my pups when people comment on how well mannered and tempered they are .
I have a 6 month old who is insecure about new dogs we come across (hackles up, growls quietly), and crazy about my roommate's dog. I would love for him to be more neutral about both, but I'm kind of at a loss. I've really enjoyed your videos! Incorporating a difference between praising and releasing has been particularly helpful.
i just discovered you on Facebook and your advice is so helpful. I have a 3 month old Std. Poodle and am searching for more puppy guidance. I have an excellent trainer, but always ready to add to my toolbox, especially with new puppy.
The first thing i teach all my foster dogs, including 8 week old puppies is the place and stay with duration command ( i usually direct them to a doggie bed on the floor). I find that since these are the easiest commands to teach it helps establish the relationship and confidence in the dog, which makes subsequent training easier. It is also extremely useful when you need the dog/puppy to settle down while you are cleaning his pen, doing something else in the room, when visitors come, etc.
Larry, thank you for posting all these great tips. Next week I'm picking up my first Malinois male. He is 4 month old. He is getting 2 months of basic protection and bite work. We have a two years old labrador that I've been training in your style since she was 8 weeks. Best dog we ever had. my main failure with my Lab is the recall (she knows 30 other commands). I'm taking your advice of puppy attention and engagement with my Lab starting tonight.
You don't use an e-collar for training. You use it for proofing. So...you can use it as soon as your dogs are well trained and you can introduce it to your dog a couple of weeks before that.
I really appreciate all that you share. I have a 4 yr old Ridgeback and just rehomed a 7 month old Ridgeback. Both entire. The older dog isn’t openly aggressive and they get on great on free walks. But I don’t think he is that happy with the new addition - grumbles under his breath, refuses to sleep next to the pup, either stalks him or runs away and hides inside the house. Would appreciate some advice - happy to pay for a consultation- I just can’t find a website or contact for you. Thanks again for your awesome work and sharing.
I busted my ass these past 5-6 mo lots of discipline and no sick days .I think I’ve already created the dog I want . Now we can afford to play tricks for fun ❤️ icing on the cake 😀
I've always gotten dogs from shelters that are already grown, I'm thinking about getting a little pitbull/lab mix puppy soon and it will be the first time I raise a dog from a puppy. I hope to raise her to be really affectionate and loving towards me. The dogs I've gotten as adults from shelters have been somewhat indifferent, they don't seem to get very attached and aren't all that affectionate. Maybe it was just the breeds, but I'm hoping that raising one from a puppy will make her so.
I have a shepherd that had a stroke when she was 3 months. Almost died. The vet says there is some brain damage. She also has a stomach disorded like colitis. Having accident is somewhat a regular occurance. Thanks for the tips. You gave me some new ideas to train her.
We've got a 16 week old AKC German Shepherd and she knows some commands. Such as "Sit", "Down" obviously she's still learning. I babysit a 19 month old child. When is a good age to where they can be together? Currently they are separated by baby gate. Pup is kept in kitchen and toddler elsewhere. They see each other and such. I feel that they aren't ready to be together. As I feel that either one of them understands each other. As they are still learning. When is a good age to put them together? Or let them be in the same room together? Thank you!
Beauuuuuuuutiful truth and boom. “Leave it” was the first thing I taught my lil rescued mutt, (welcomed him in at 4.5 months with zero education before that), and he sponged it up like a CHAMP. Had him fetching and dropping within the first backyard play session too. I think I like fetch even more than Dino... And almost as much as I dig that fab Jersey accent of yers. ;)
It's actually really easy, but i'm not about to explain it in a comment. There are quite a few good tutorials on youtube if you look for them. (if you haven't already taught it)
I’m a new subscriber People in the Belgian Malinois group on Facebook told me about you, how do you feel about buying a 2yr old dog who has been obedience and protection trained? Or should I just buy a puppy and build him up?
I've seen a few of this guys videos and not really been impressed. But almost all of what he has to say in this video is very good advice - well worth the watch.
I can't really take my puppy home until she's 4 months old. I'm taking her for two weeks a week apart this month but then I have to leave the country for three weeks. Will any work I've done with her in the coming weeks be lost by the time I take her properly? Am I setting myself up for trouble here or will 4 months still be plenty young to teach her what behaviour I expect from her?
I tried to train my puppy when i first got her (8 weeks) but after 2 days she got really sick. I had check her into a hospital for 8 days and now that i have her back im trying to train her but i cant get her into it. I use food (which she loves) but she doesn't seem interested. Now shes 12 weeks old, what can I do to get her attention?
I’m on track Larry, My only regret was not teaching the “leave it” command first. ‘That is so valuable with a high herding breed dog and chickens. My pup is 4mo old long haired German Shepherd. and knows all you listed and more. I also include at the very beginning, putting my hands in the food bowl, taking the bowl away, asking the pup to step back in the middle of eating. I have grand babies, and never want to have a food aggressive dog around my grand babies. With that said, I teach the grand babies to respect the dog while it is eating. I am still concerned about socialization. I have an older Great Dane (10). Who doesn’t want anything to do with the new 4mo. pup. Is her lack of playing harming the new pup? Do you have any advise on what to do about playing well with others.
Hi Larry: I'll be getting an Olde English Bulldog who is approx. 41/2 months old. I believe it's crate trained, however what do you suggest I should do once getting her home. I have cats and a male catahoula dog 9 years old. Please suggest your thoughts as I don't want to have things go wrong right from the start. I feel like it's bringing a new human baby home. Thanks LizG
Hi Larry: Although I don't have a dog presently (my last three have been GSD), I plan on getting another when I can devote all of my time to a dog and its training. I'm semi-retired and single, so when I'm done with part-time work, I'll begin looking in earnest...You are about the only trainer whose videos actually show how to train a dog. I didn't know what a "touch pad" and "place" were or their purpose until I watched your video. I live in rural Maine and have large lawns, fields, and woods on my property in which to train and play with a dog. I would like to learn basic sport work just to keep my dog fit and happy... Most of the RUclips videos I've watched show the results of training but not the actual training itself. Very frustrating! Are they afraid they'll lose business if they show an actual training session? Anyway, I'll keeping watching your videos in anticipation of getting a puppy in the future. Thank you so much.
Life in Pieces there are a few of his videos explaining this dude. Basically he asks the dog to get into a position on a place of his choosing. Like a mat or a bed or even on top of a crate. Just somewhere where the dog can be positioned for further training to occur. I.e place, stay..... come. Thats what ive got from it anyway.
Not what I wanted to hear but what I needed. Thank you. Brought home an excitable beagle puppy a week ago... now 9 weeks old. When he gets too excited he bites too hard.... any advice on that?
Thanks Larry...another great video. I was asking myself exactly this question: ...wonder what he teaches his dogs when they're still puppies?...May I ask at which point you introduce the e-collar, or do u only use it to "recover" clients dogs?...Please keep up this great channel!!!
Could you please help explain the E collars should not be a constant relying collar to be on a dog. I'm seeing so many dog right now that are wearing a release collar, and E collar, and a prong collar, gentle head harness...all these tool at the same time. Becoming a fade in service dog trend. What happens to positive motivation training that took time as compared to training in minutes. Do you feel obedient comes quicker with the mature and manners as a dog enters adulthood if train over time, love leash training. Agree that people get feather ruffled over the subject of collars or harnesses..
All dog trainers have their techniques and my argue that they are right and others are wrong. It all started at the moment of mating and then to the breeder and owner. So basically you get what you get. As for what to teach first depends on the dog but my feeling is start with attention training. Obedience follows later on. The leash is the physical connection to the dog. But long lining the dog does not give full control, when a puppy has to go they have to go. Its training and conditioning.
I noticed what you said about the shots. My 8 week puppy will be using a public area to potty & I mb terrified of her getting parvo so I'm using pads & keeping her indoors until her 1st shots. What's your recommendation?
Larry, is it possible to start over with a 3 year old dog? My Boston Terrier has become reactive to a lot of things and I was wondering if I could use your puppy training advice with an adult dog?
I've had my puppy chihuahuasince he was only 2 weeks old. I found him and nursed him and everything. Now he is 6 weeks almost 7. Is this a good time to start training? If yes what treats can I use because he is weaning at the moment. I hope you see this and let me know if you do I would really appreciate it thank you!
I am thinking of taking little Italian greyhound as my first dog. I am concern as the one available is full 4 months old puppy, and I would like to train him in another language - Do you think it will be a tall order for me and actually possible at all, considering how old is he and his apparently stubborn race? Thank you in advance and Happy Easter!
Hi Larry thanks for the video I have a 9 month old GSD I've been working with her since I bought her home she know the commands but when we are out in public she acts like I never did anything what am I doing wrong please advice if you can
Hi, I'm not certain I can post a reply - but here goes. We just got our 5th Rottie (Our lst after we saw The Omen on opening day many moons ago). I'll just add my criteria. 1st) you need a 'large breed' plus 'puppy combination. Rotties are fast growing - In may The Duke was 15 pds,. Now December - he's 85 pds and still growing...till 18 months. Just 'puppy' is not enough. You will want to be on 'puppy' status for at least a year 2) You want to avoid food or treats with 'onion, garlic , sugar. I used to get 'whatever', but have since come to learn the ingredients and the source of the ingredients are crucial. You want to focus on USA manufactured. (The U.S. has more stringent regulations). this includes bones and treats 3) you will want to look at the list of ingredients. K9's are carnivorous - so you don't want something with lots of grains (fillers). 4) if and when you change from one brand to another you absolutely 'must' do it ever so slowly or else the stools are endlessly loose. Hope that gets you started.
Does the “neutral” feeling towards other dogs and people come as a by product from training and keeping the puppy close to you? Or do you tell them to “leave it” when they’re around other dogs? That’s my goal, neutral reaction. That’s how our 8 year old dachshund is, nothing phases him.
I would live to know how you deal with a dog jumping on you and how to stop that whether it be a puppy and preventing the behavior or a rescue dog that has had no real training.
To be honest, I prefer a knee jerk that knocks the dog to the side and a firm "No". But most dogs that have jumped on me aren't as exuberant as some may be (I know Labs and Goldens can come at you like a bat out of hell). Something more forceful may be needed for those. If all else fails, I'd request the owner to curb their dog.
My puppy won’t play with me! He used to play a lot now he just wants to get trained all the time and doesn’t care about toys that much. He is 12 weeks old
Isn't learning his name first the most important / useful ? Like "his name" + "leave it" ? I don't know really As you say there are so many stuffs on the Internet and we don't know where to look out and what to trust. I tend to trust experts and not casuals at least for the important stuff. Thanks you for this great vid
I really want a affectionate dog that sleeps on the bed with me, so I'm using "supervision" training for housetraining. Not crate etc. It's tough but for me it's worth it.
I disagree with pup ever on a leash. I will jump off the couch and put the pup where he needs to be vs the long line. But I’m a never ever use a leash trainer.
#1. What's a place command?-- If you're going to recall an audience you should train us at every opportunity to understand the verbage. #2. I teach them to leave it, because leave it works!-- ok, sounds good, now here's where you insert: "check out xyz video for a great tutorial." Or better yet, links in your notes! Shazam!!!, That would be awesome.
Isn't kind of fucked up to keep them basically on lock down for the entire beginning of their lives?? Seems like a little lazy to me. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm sure its effective but it just seems more or less like you are giving them a 2 year sentence and they've done nothing wrong. . . AND I don't feel like you should keep your dog away from people who want to see him. . Just my thoughts.
You’re my favourite dog trainer. The information you provide has helped my dogs out an incredible amount. I plan to use your ideas to better my future dogs. Thank you for all you do.

Good stuff..I'm glad I'm on the right path with my 11 week gsd.
You are so right with the Leavitt they truly understand it got my Belgian eight weeks so by the time he was nine weeks he know it thank you for all that you do for our dogs!!
Thats what we all love about you Larry is that you show what your doing. You don't hide anything about the training process..THUMBS UP TO YOU BUDDY!!!
Cocoa Man thanks brother
I love your methods , they are so similar to how I've always brought up my dogs . I've always been proud of my pups when people comment on how well mannered and tempered they are .
Could you show this leave it/out command training in detail.
"Drop it" what i say alot and my 3 month old shelty puppy stops or drop what he has in his mouth
Yes “leave it” is the first thing I teach my puppies too!!! I use “drop it” instead of “out”. But I’m there with you on that!
I have a 6 month old who is insecure about new dogs we come across (hackles up, growls quietly), and crazy about my roommate's dog. I would love for him to be more neutral about both, but I'm kind of at a loss. I've really enjoyed your videos! Totally agree Larry. The leave it command is so important. Really well explained. Thank you :)
This makes so much sense! I wish I would have discovered your channel 6 months ago...
When do you start including e-collar in the training?
Morgan Duren never
You don't use an e-collar for training. You use it for proofing. So...you can use it as soon as your dogs are well trained and you can introduce it to your dog a couple of weeks before that.
I've been following your advice and my Chewie is turning out great so far! Thanks, Larry!
Ruthy D thanks Ruthy
If only you could teach me to train my kids this way......
Next Sunday, I bring my 8wk old Golden Retriever home. ☺💝 Studying all your videos.
I really appreciate all that you share. I have a 4 yr old Ridgeback and just rehomed a 7 month old Ridgeback. Both entire. The older dog isn’t openly aggressive and they get on great on free walks. I busted my ass these past 5-6 mo lots of discipline and no sick days .I think I’ve already created the dog I want . Now we can afford to play tricks for fun ❤️ icing on the cake 😀
you are my new favorite trainer, I agree with all philosophy you believe in
You explain things well.
I'm soo glad I found you! Awesome videos..great advice!! Thank you 😊
I use sound at feeding time for recall it works to build a foundation like calling them out for house breaking
Just found your channel & subscribed. Thank you for putting this information out there :) I am an aspiring dog trainer myself.

I have a shepherd that had a stroke when she was 3 months. Almost died. The vet says there is some brain damage. She also has a stomach disorded like colitis. Having accident is somewhat a regular occurance. Thanks for the tips. You gave me some new ideas to train her.
Great info, your practical approach works for me.
Makes perfect sense. Thank you for posting this.
Hi Larry my puppy is rottie love her, i cant get her to stop bitting she my hands! She was a gift! I am following every advise u give. Thanks
Beauuuuuuuutiful truth and boom. “Leave it” was the first thing I taught my lil rescued mutt, (welcomed him in at 4.5 months with zero education before that), and he sponged it up like a CHAMP. Tell me how you teach leave it to your dog's?
Izzi b yes I’m curious too
It's actually really easy, but i'm not about to explain it in a comment. There are quite a few good tutorials on youtube if you look for them. (if you haven't already taught it)
Breanna
Give it a slap on the but after you say leave it, it eill soon learn that leave it means get the fuck away from it 😂
Don’t be lazy and search yourself plenty of videos. Out there
Great information. New subscriber...running to your channel! right now!!!
Solid advice, ty for sharing.

I just got a female Belgian Malinois and I have a 2 year old German shepherd
woooohoooooo!
Brett fialko update she died, and German going on 4 now
What is the “place” command?
Life in Pieces Like a “go to your bed” command. Just a dog staying on a dog bed, mat, or cot.

Hi Larry thanks for the video I have a 9 month old GSD I've been working with her since I bought her home she know the commands but when we are out in public she acts like I never did anything what am I doing wrong please advice if you can
angie kellogg
Why do you say that? is your dog just excited?
In stead of leave it can i cuse no
so you mean to tell me that in the house for 3 4 months your puppies are mostly on a long line ?
no
Hello Larry I am the new owner of a Rottie puppy. and will be coming home on 1/20/2018. what advice can you give me regarding food
Hi, I'm not certain I can post a reply - but here goes. We just got our 5th Rottie (Our lst after we saw The Omen on opening day many moons ago).
Great! Thanks!
i do the same thing but in german!
My JRT is 10 weeks old... I'm completely wiped out, he's going to be a fantistic worker
Larry, you forgot to mention the "go potty" command while house breaking the puppy.
My puppy won’t play with me! He used to play a lot now he just wants to get trained all the time and doesn’t care about toys that much. He is 12 weeks old
Tnx from algeria
Hey Larry what’s your Facebook page?
More like trainers will make a lot of money in about 5 months once the christmas present dog is out of its cute stage and has problems 😂
Hailey Jarmon omg but the cute stage is the hardest stage
PLEAS HELP ME!!
no
Isn't learning his name first the most important / useful ? Like "his name" + "leave it" ? I don't know really
As you say there are so many stuffs on the Internet and we don't know where to look out and what to trust. I tend to trust experts and not casuals at least for the important stuff.
Thanks you for this great vid
smart .. soooooo smart
💯
Can I have one of your Dalmatian I mean the police dog
Breanna
no
How do I get my puppy to bring back the toy for fetch?
How do to train leave it ?
The first thing I train is to poop outside. :-)
I really want a affectionate dog that sleeps on the bed with me, so I'm using "supervision" training for housetraining. Not crate etc. It's tough but for me it's worth it.
You’re single huh? My husband would think that’s absurd sleeping with our dog when I have him ...😂
I disagree with pup ever on a leash. I will jump off the couch and put the pup where he needs to be vs the long line. But I’m a never ever use a leash trainer.
Put God first and all will be alright.
Alex C I don’t know where the heck you live but in America we preserve the right of freedom of religion.
Why do I keep seeing you sitting in the car with NO DOG THAT YOU'RE TRAINING !!!!????
Dean Wilson because he’s teaching
Yeah would have loved to see some demonstration
Shazam!!!, That would be awesome.
homeboys? code word alert
Lmao the way he says luring. It's a U not an O.
Exactly
Isn't kind of fucked up to keep them basically on lock down for the entire beginning of their lives?? Seems like a little lazy to me. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm sure its effective but it just seems more or less like you are giving them a 2 year sentence and they've done nothing wrong. . . AND I don't feel like you should keep your dog away from people who want to see him. . Just my thoughts.
Alex C my dog said you are an ignorant A hole. I scolded her and sent her to the corner. I don't where she picks up this language.
