I agree that this looks much better. Probably easier than trying to custom cut a piece of awkward lattice! Next summer, I'm gonna remove the broken and weathered lattice and do this!
Looks good, but it had to cost more. And treated wood, although should last longer by not being against the ground, will also rot in time. Plastic lattice should last almost forever if it doesn’t crack. White would probably get that dingy, dirty look, but a darker color would look better. As far as wood lattice, I had 2 pieces to make a privacy fence and it’s still good after 20 years. The bottom of the treated posts rotted out and when we redid it we used treated pickets for a different look. If you’re cutting lattice, put a piece of styrofoam under it on the garage floor or even the deck. Set your saw depth to just a little more than the lattice thickness and cut away. Works great on plywood too.
Well done lattice not only looks good but also easy. The vinyl white also doesn’t require additional painting. Also when using a cover behind a deck you need to deal with ground slope which is straight forward with lattice.
I personally like the look of lattice but I was raised by my great grandparents that had an old Antebellum Mississippi Delta mixed with Victorian London style to their decorating, so my taste is obviously outdated even though I just turned 30. For a modern aesthetic, what you did looks great and is very practical.
Looks great! And with that much structure, you can attach hinges at a (very slight) angle so it can swing out and rise as it swings to avoid marring or interference with the surface in front.
Well done. Not only does it look better, covers more, but PT wood with stain/waterproofing is much more durable. Lattice, wood or plastic will NOT "last almost forever." Lattice will crack and break. I do recommend have vertical bracing every 4ft to prevent warping. You'll be glad you did 10 years down the road. Personally the one thing I would change would be to reduce the spacing between the boards. It is more work but has a cleaner look. If done correctly it should last 20-30 years.
An alternative to both lattice and wood for deck skirting is Barrette Outdoor Living privacy panels. Made of polypropylene, 2'x4' and 3'x5' panels, they come in a variety of paterns and colors, require no maintenance, cut easily and would tuck right under the lip of your deck perimeter board.......leaving no unsightly gap.
My late neighbor was a home improvement guy and an excellent carpenter. He absolutely hated lattice and usually made something else as you did. I believe he would have loved your idea.
This type of design looks great and I’ve been tempted to use it in my backyard space for that reason. But I have no faith at all that the boards won’t warp or bow and look terrible after a year or so.
Nice job again. Very cool. Much better than lattice. When the woodland creatures give me the nod that they've completed the destruction of my deck lattice, I'll do something like this.
Does this stick out past the over hang of the deck boards? I feel like that would be annoying. I think I’d like to try and incorporate something like this under the rim joist instead of over top of it? On my deck the rim joists are saddled on the sides of the 4x4 not flush on top.
RUclips! I started by renovating bathrooms, a kitchen, a basement, etc. so this little project was a breeze! Definitely a good starter project for someone looking to learn how to use basic power tools ⚒️
Nice👍 I had to build 100 plus foot of lattice to match a historic house lattice once. Took two of us to build in shop a week. Another week to install. The original was maple !! We used poplar one inch thick by two inch wide slats not nominal size actual size. Then battens between sections.
That sounds very involved but I’m sure it turned out great. Honestly if you’re using a wood like maple or cedar almost anything can look pretty sweet 👍 thanks for the comment!
The only thing that stuff is good for is a hoop style greenhouse. Of course you can’t use it for animals because they’ll chew right through it. But if you get a bunch of pallets and you attach that plastic lattice on one side and then the other to make a hoop, and then you put them all together, you have a structure that will accept the big rolls of plastic extremely easy and you can duct tape it on there And use plastic zip ties as well. And it will last you a year until you have to change the plastic wrap, but the structure will last you about 5 yrs before those plastic lattice snap. To attach them to the pallets you get a big bag of heavy duty outdoor rated zip ties. Ladies, you can do this! There’s no hammering and no nails and no screwdrivers either. And then all you have to do is put something down on the pallets for a more stable floor if you don’t like walking across the slats with the holes between them. For that you can even buy some large doormats that are very thick and just throw them down and it will give you a better footing all the way across your pallets. It’s probably the cheapest way to make a greenhouse super fast. On each end, you just buy some chicken wire or some of that plastic type of chicken wire and you cut it to shape and you zip tie it on there. You’ll have to get a little creative on one end for a door, but there’s plenty of videos for those chicken hoop coops houses that will give you the idea if you want to start hammering and so forth. If not all you have to do is cut yourself an upside down L shape out of some thick plastic hardware cloth for chicken coops. It will last a couple of years as long as you don’t yank on it really hard. And you just get a couple of bungee cords & put one at the top and one at the bottom and it keeps the door closed. And having the mesh on either end of your greenhouse, gives you the ability to plastic it over if you want to keep out all the wind or get a Crossbreeze going through there during the summer. I also saw somebody do this for a catio. They just used one pallet and one lattice and a roll of plastic and a small roll of plastic chicken wire. Unfortunately, my cats would get out of that so I got them a big chicken coop that I’m working on for a catio. But if you have well mannered kitties it’s great! So there is a few things that that flimsy lattice is good for. Another thing it can be good for is skirting around a mobile home or a travel trailer that you’re putting up for a tiny home. You can use a really cheap electric saw and cut them to the width you need and you can use pieces of rebar and thread them in and out of the slots and pound that in the ground to hold up your fencing… and paint the rebar the same color. Then you have yourself a perfect little fence for really cheap that will keep out the critters from underneath your cabin or your mobile home or your travel trailer. Also… One of my neighbors has two of those plastic lattice in brown color tossed up on top of his pergola with vines growing all across it for shade on his pergola. So I guess there’s some things you can do with it, but truly it is ineffective for most things. Its also got a really short life span for most uses outdoors.
I only use lattice as a removable dome over my vegetable garden to keep the puppy out. Otherwise, I don't care for them and where I live, they are almost $50 each now.
I would just add a few more intermediate vertical braces (at different heights to match to the slope) and then add a board between braces whenever the gap increases too much. I hope that makes sense. But it’s definitely a bit more complicated for a sloped application.
Thanks! Ya, it makes sense. I just have a hard time envisioning it all and mine would likely be in Trex and would hate to waste the money for it to look bad.
Appreciate it! The pressure treated “green” was definitely pretty prominent on these boards though - so that was a bit unfortunate. Should fade over time though.
Haha yea I should probably just clean out all that lumber and leave it open BUT one day (probably 2036) that scrap piece of lumber under the deck that I saved will be “perfect” for some project 🤣
That rubbish you are showing is NOT lattice. PERIOD Real timber lattice properly made looks 100 times better than the cheap slats you installed. Those slats will warp within a matter on months.
I have never liked the look of lattice! I realize it’s because it _LOOKS_ like basket weave but it’s not, so the shadows are ‘off’ Also, white plastic lattice gets so dusty & gross and the texture makes it hard to clean. Blech 🤢
That's [erfect. {[=p}! I never liked lattice vertical or horizontal screens like yours always the nicest look. Congratulations and I bet it was cheaper too [or did you say that already?]. Have a great day.

Fence pickets should be enough and cheaper. I use them for a lot of outdoor craft projects.

Glad you didn't keep the lattice. Those boards were well done!
Looks great! And with that much structure, you can attach hinges at a (very slight) angle so it can swing out and rise as it swings to avoid marring or interference with the surface in front.
I like how it looks but I also like lattice

I appreciate that! It’s simple, but I think it’s definitely an improvement 👍
Awesome build, Andrew! Another great video!
Appreciate it!!
Way, way, WAY better than lattice!
I like this. It looks mu better than lattice. My fav pattern is the one you used on your steps.
❤❤❤
This type of design looks great and I’ve been tempted to use it in my backyard space for that reason. But I have no faith at all that the boards won’t warp or bow and look terrible after a year or so.
Looks great, and I love the helpful tips too!
Nice job again. Very cool. Much better than lattice. When the woodland creatures give me the nod that they've completed the destruction of my deck lattice, I'll do something like this.
Love your style Adrew!
Appreciate it, Lucy!
Andrew, looks great.
"Like peasants.." (walks over to work on the ground 😂) 👍👍✌️

Nice. A lot better than the other.
How did you learn to do all.of this?
RUclips! I started by renovating bathrooms, a kitchen, a basement, etc. so this little project was a breeze! Definitely a good starter project for someone looking to learn how to use basic power tools ⚒️
@AndrewThronImprovements Any RUclips Channel in particular? I did my upstairs bathroom. Boy did i learn a lot, especially of what not to do..
Looks great. Thks for the idea

Is it me or do the boards 2, 3, 6 look like different sizes?
I usually have to cut both ends because the ends aren’t always square
I only use lattice as a removable dome over my vegetable garden to keep the puppy out.
Otherwise, I don't care for them and where I live, they are almost $50 each now.
Looks good 💜
Nice like always, I would like to know what's the name of the software you use to make the plan
I use the free version of Sketchup!
Aesthetically pleasing!
What about if the deck is on a slope, and it's a foot different in the front/back?
I would just add a few more intermediate vertical braces (at different heights to match to the slope) and then add a board between braces whenever the gap increases too much. I hope that makes sense. But it’s definitely a bit more complicated for a sloped application.

Great video, thank you! 👍🏻
Looks very nice
Looks fantastic
Let’s go new Andrew Thron vid
Haha appreciate it! This is a pretty simple one but I have some big stuff in the works 👍
That looks great!
This looks great. Can't wait to see it after it's stained.
Appreciate it, Shana!
Love it👍
Appreciate it! The pressure treated “green” was definitely pretty prominent on these boards though - so that was a bit unfortunate. Should fade over time though.
Another nice project done really well.
Appreciate it! It’s a simple one for sure but figured I’d share what I’m doing in case someone else likes the design.
Very nice job, you're the best 😇
Staining that will be so much easier that staining lattice. Thee is no good efficient way to stain lattice. Your privacy screen looks good.
Yes, looks great. I hate lattice also. I will use a version of this when I redo my deck. Thx
Now the kids can kick a ball
against that screen!
Nicely done - I think it looks great.
Appreciate it!! Thanks for the support 👍💪
I will go with the lattice , looks better then a fence
Agree from the start.
Nice! Men have all the fun!
It's 100% better.❤❤❤
Neat idea!
Appreciate it! Super simple 👍
There has to be a better Maintenance Free solution, maybe do this project using composite decking
To each his own, for me lattice is the better-looking option.
How much more maintainence is involved in three years? I agree it looks better but at 65 years old I want less work!
Unless you want to try to hide stuff 😊
Haha yea I should probably just clean out all that lumber and leave it open BUT one day (probably 2036) that scrap piece of lumber under the deck that I saved will be “perfect” for some project 🤣
Looks good
Add some room for air to circulate. Some of my lumber rotted out.
🌴🌴🌴 You always share amazing projects and that’s why I love your channel. Blessings,Carlos ✝️🙏❤️😊🇺🇸
Appreciate it, Carlos!
I like the basic idea, just not crazy about the different board widths. Looks unsymmetrical.
Looks good to me
Looks very good but lattice is classic.
that poor window is now all alone in the dark 😢
That rubbish you are showing is NOT lattice. PERIOD
Real timber lattice properly made looks 100 times better than the cheap slats you installed. Those slats will warp within a matter on months.
Very nice
Kids, be sure to build some sawhorses first. Lol. Do not operate that saw on the ground 😢
Thought you were going to do a cost breakdown?
It’s in the blog! First link in bio. I crunched the numbers after editing the video
@@AndrewThronImprovements Whoops, must have missed that. Thanks.
But it’s a helluva lot cheaper!
It look lots better than lattice.
But I diffintly think stain the screen.
Agreed - lot’s of pressure treated “green” on those boards
FAN- FREEKIN-TASTIC ❤❤❤❤❤
Haha thanks!
I agree its mch ncer than lattace
I have never liked the look of lattice! I realize it’s because it _LOOKS_ like basket weave but it’s not, so the shadows are ‘off’
Also, white plastic lattice gets so dusty & gross and the texture makes it hard to clean. Blech 🤢
Looks a whole lot nicer than the lattice!👍🏻
Vertical lattice looks better.
Looks great and is cost effective, Lattice looks tacky.
I also hate lattice...thank you
Great look! Build yourself a saw table! Just sayin.
Thanks! And I need a miter station so badly 😅
nice instructions, just slow down on talking a bit...not too slow..just a tad. Especially when you explaining important things. Thanks.
Lattice seems to be stupid expensive now days too.
Yea I was shocked that the wooden options was over $40..
Cost 10x more.
Thron 2028 🎉
😂🙏👍
Lattice is a “rat ladder” 🤨
Looks like pallets.
That's [erfect. {[=p}! I never liked lattice vertical or horizontal screens like yours always the nicest look. Congratulations and I bet it was cheaper too [or did you say that already?]. Have a great day.
Some of these comments are pretty nasty and clueless. Good for you putting up with them.
Just looks like a recycled pallet.
YOU HAVE NO CLASS. LUMBERYARDS EVERYWHERE SELL LATTICE TO THE BUYERS DELIGHT. GAWD!! HOW NASTY YOU JUST PROVED YOURSELF. 🤣😂💀😵💫🙄
I can’t stand lattice
If lattice sucks, then decks suck even more. Even the nicest decks still looks like shyte. Avoid decks at all cost.
Pavers are definitely the move but sometimes a deck is a necessary evil haha
Horizontal lumber like that will sag in a short time. It will look like shit in a couple years as the gaps will not be even
