This is actually way too close to call. Cephalopod is more original (except for the strobing) and Dementia is technically superior. As there's no clear winner this one boils down to personal preference in terms of style.
I first saw this in 2007... So sick, i saved it to several playlists in several older youtube accounts. Le'me say, Cephalopod was way ahead of his time, way beyond Dementia, totally underrated, and never really seen again. I've been searching youtube, off and on, for years of any other video of Cephalopod. Anyone, know Ceph's real name, what crew he was affiliated... If any, and where he's from??? Found it... Eric Gunther, Boston, Imobilare crew, early 2000's... Finally!!!
This is one of my first videos on repeat when I started popping, and it never came up on the search engine again until I remembered Dementia battled Salah at the bboy summit, the battle is still awesome
YES YES~! I finally know the name of this song, o.O It's "Beat box" by "The Art of Noise" I dunno what remix version this is, but there's alot of em, lol
wow - I originally uploaded this video clip on Soulseek about 4 years ago - its still as popular as ever. This battle took place at MIT in Cambridge, MA at an event called "BBoy till ya Drop". Dementia, in Red, has nice clean body waves, good hard chest popping, and crisp tuts. Cephalopod, shows some excellent animation along with his strobing - the effect is unreal - closely resembling some kind of creature from an old Harry Hauseman claymation movie, like "Sinbad and the 7th Voyage.
i showed this to me sister who is a dance choreographer. she likes both, but thinks the guy in red is flailing his arms about too much, when its not neccesary. once she mentioned that, i went back and watched it again, and its sort of true. but, still great battle.
I've watched this so many times! Bottom line is both of these guys are amazing and have very different styles. Ceph has incredible control, Dementia seems a bit more dynamic. Both are incredible and totally blow me away. This is arguably the best dance video on RUclips.
This battle took place at MIT in Cambridge, Mass at an event called "BBoy Til Ya Drop" around the year 2003. It was part of a Poppin' contest. This was one of the better battles during that event. Cephalopod (green) shows some decent "Animation" style skills, while Dementia shows some nice tutting, waving, and popping. Dementia is the more well-rounded dancer and flips styles rather nicely.
Cephalapod's strolling strobe is amazing. Its very difficult to dime stop while taking steps, yet he keeps it clean throughout and makes it look like you're watching a clip of filmed animation. Love it. Thank you for posting this.
hahah yea but llok at da guy in da green he goes with da music n his style is sick! he goes in wit a great entry n goes out out dancing da guy in da red just stops dancing n walks but to his spot!0.0 haha da green guy is a really cordinated dancer, he mixes his moves n actually looks like a bot! red guy kinda does da same move over n over again. i still vote green!! _/MetAllicA\_!!
Ok im going to have to say you have no idea what your talking about. I watched it again and dementia is no more repetitious than the other guy, and im telling you that you cant tell technique from a shitty youtube video like this. Furthermore I know that Dementia is a really good popper so i really doubt that he was anything but flawless here. I dont understand why you said "theres a difference between popping and modern dance he should stick to either one" That doesnt even make any sense here.
@yayatCHILLZ Get your facts correct before saying anything like that. Slides and glides are a part of popping and all the moves were taught to micheal jackson by the likes of poppin taco, electric boogaloos . He did not event sliding, it was done way before MJ.
Goddamn, u had 1 of the most on-point comments ive evr seen on a poppn thred. 100% agree. Hands down green was th hardr dancr, imo. Also, twice Red got deep-bass beats tossed his way by the d.j. Side note, A LOT of yung dancrs these days go too long with thyre tutts, IMO. Green took this.
this 2 guys dancing an ny style its based on poppz not on boogaloo funk styles are boogaloo that was eletro poppin styles like the man poppin taco boogaloo diffrend style and poppin difrend style electric boogalo are the fusion of the 2 styles in one this guys dance is ok man
both are good, but red is real sloppy and his last go looked like a junior high drill team routine minus the skirt and gloves. Green is the best here because he displays much more control of his muscles and a wider variety of moves, and no drill teaming.
@yayatCHILLZ i love michael jackson, but the truth is that he didnt invent that move and neither did he invent other moves he used to perform with,,,, he got taught by the eletric boogaloos,..... do ur research!
the battle was a great battle, because both are pretty even. theres some salah battles that its just him killin the other guy. but here, these 2 are pretty evenly matched and very smooth in their transitions.
all i know is that these 2 can flat out dance. they are both insane with their moves but personally, i liked the one in the red shirt but i wouldn't mind doing it like the other guy either. both are awsome.....
verry nice a want to learn the arm wave much better but its so freakin hard for me and the body wave to popping is a great style and i like it can somebody send me the names of some good tracks for popping
at 1:19 that slide is original good move..but the music was horrible the best music to poplock off is "im ready" by kano we use to get off on it if yous would like to hear it just type it in
i don't think it would take a year..now if you practice often and watch many popping videos, you will definitely succeed. i have been popping for 4 months now and it is the decision i have ever made
They love it but they need to see it live. However I think that the great majority of girls aren't interesting in learning how to pop so they don't search for things like this.
@yayatCHILLZ a no being hater by i like mj but thoses move were not created by him he made them know to the world but they were may by old skkool poppers like tubor
@siloe103 I agree Homey but I was watching Shields and Yarnell mime show when I was a kid then i checked out the LA Lockers and I was poppin before Moonwalk came out.
look people chris brown and the other artist dont really have a good understandin of wat real hip hop dancin is ...its just that their moves are over rated!
Bad ass tutting and popping (nice seeing them intermixed!!!) The first song is "Beat Box" by the Art of Noise, the second is "One for the Treble" with Davy DMX
what are all you talking about? can any of you dance like this? they are both excellent practicianers of dance, unless you can move, keep your mouth shut. thanks
first one is Art Of Noise-BeatBox (Diversion One) and Davy DMX-One For The Treble but u wont be able to find the one in this video cuz the DJ remixed it
@yayatCHILLZ that is a basic glide, I m not sure who created it but it was around before Micheal Jackson made it popular, Jackson was taught to dance by the electric Boogaloos who taught him and gave many of the tool he used in his dance. Now i m not saying Micheal was not a super talented dancer he was but he didnt invent alot of moves he did, He however gave them great exposure. RIP Micheal
I like this battle because it was mostly a showcase of the special effects in popping like acting like a robot (I'm not sure if botting is the correct term for it), strobing, little bit of snaking and ticking. It was interesting and a nice trip from the usual boogaloo with the lurch, old mans, and fresnos.
I no longer have the rest of the video; I only kept the best match. The rest of the video showed mostly bboying and some footage of local Boston poppers like Shallow, Tron, and Domino, gettin' down in cyphers. As far as the music, I'm sure there is more music that you can download by Art of Noise the band the produced the hit "Beatbox"
Don't know, the only other battle footage of him that I ever saw was in one of the Winter Wars events produced by Crazy Eddie. I had his email address at one time but lost it, I emailed him to ask permission to upload the Cephalopod vs Dementia battle back in 2003, he said it was ok. I think he was really into that "Burning Man" event if I remember correctly
Well thats your opinion , and i respect that . Dementia is repetitious and sloppy in my eyes . there is a difference between actual popping and modern dance . He should stick to either one . Thanx for your input tho.
EveryOne seems to like the guy in the red ,He's good .. but you really cant see the technique , his animation (ticks) isn't as good as the other guy in the green . Both guys are good but the guy in the red is a little sloppy ..
Opps! forgot to add : "When Dementia goes for his second round *his tutting*, the song changes into another different song. Some transition huh? If anyone happens to know it, lol, please post it, I really want to know
Man..... This is Two gods at work with popping... If someone can name a better popper, you let me know because green and Red, them two guys, Are cleaner than Mr.clean and Sicker than Chuck norris's Round house kick o.0
@yayatCHILLZ Yeah... definitely not created by michael jackson. He didn't really invent to many moves. He just redesigned a lot of the old ones with different styles.
This the one of the first battles i watched. Before i came across popping :) God Bless youtube.
ticking is a specific type of hitting
where the hits are very close together
not exactly strobing but looks cleaner
1st Track as has been said "beat Box" by Art of Noise, 2nd Track "One for the treble " by Davy DMX
ENORME Battle !!
This is actually way too close to call. Cephalopod is more original (except for the strobing) and Dementia is technically superior. As there's no clear winner this one boils down to personal preference in terms of style.
A couple of dude who literally move like water
Art of Noise- BeatBox

Yup, no doubt. Just rewatched and Cephalopod is way, way sicker than I remembered.
This is one of my first videos on repeat when I started popping, and it never came up on the search engine again until I remembered Dementia battled Salah at the bboy summit, the battle is still awesome
YES YES~! I finally know the name of this song, o.O

Ancient internet right here

Were one of these teams from MIT?
Seriously this is a pretty legit battle but back when cephalopod was in college he was better. I'm sure those battles can be found somewhere.
guy in the green had sick ass strobing and guy in the red is a good at hittin it was a tie to me both styles are tight!
this vid still remains the most undecisive battle...
two very different styles
one of the best battles i've seen
Dementia is a beast and underrated. I wish I could see him in recent events. This is the first poppin video ive ever seen and it got me into poppin.
Was expecting to see a squid fight memory loss
creativity goes to ceph. dementia didn't come with anything that hasn't been seen before.
Ceph took this one. Peace to poppin' to the the Art Of Noise!!!
Dementia one of the best poppers of all-time!
the first guys strobbing was so much better than the others.
I've watched this so many times! Bottom line is both of these guys are amazing and have very different styles.
Ceph has incredible control, Dementia seems a bit more dynamic. Both are incredible and totally blow me away.
This is arguably the best dance video on RUclips.
unclebraddah well said. ceph holding it down!
I just am amazed at the quality of both competitors! awesome beats and even better dancing. watch this over and over, never gets old.
i think they were both exceptional poppers
First song names anyone now please
Thank you playlist containing 2,500 videos from 2005 for introducing me to a popular non-trendy competition

Brings back memories from when I left Dementia in the dust when we battled.

I doubt dementia is sloppy here. Anyway you can't see technique at all on this low quality video. Also I dont see that he did any animation at all.
@yayatCHILLZ
that is a basic glide, I m not sure who created it but it was around before Micheal Jackson made it popular, Jackson was taught to dance by the electric Boogaloos who taught him and gave many of the tool he used in his dance. yea dude if ur a dancer then u must be 1 fuked up dancer
whos the best dancer?
its the 1 having the most fun and being the most respectful

I remembr that shit frm bck in da day wen I was a teenager. Art of Noiz, Davy Dmx the whole nine. Dementia even stole sum of my moves.
both these fools get down! straight gangster beats,i liked green guys style but red guy was was repping for sure. just an awesome battle
dementia's tutting was bomb ,but cephalopod ticking even better. Both are very good ,but for me in this battle win Cephalopod
every one of them use popping if you watch them
they just incorperate different aspects of hip hop into it
but they do pop
Well thats your opinion , and i respect that . Dementia is repetitious and sloppy in my eyes . there is a difference between actual popping and modern dance . He should stick to either one . Thanx for your input tho.
EveryOne seems to like the guy in the red ,He's good .. but you really cant see the technique , his animation (ticks) isn't as good as the other guy in the green . Both guys are good but the guy in the red is a little sloppy ..

shit~~
that's some nice popping moves....O_O
impressed man, nicely battled~ XD
Dementia has a really clean style. It's like the nice stage work.He is much more better then the another guy...That's it!!!!
no way. cephalopod all the way. if it went 2 more rounds c-dawg would show him up i think. he's freestyle all the way--
actually, its just a popping battle. look up locking seperately and you will see the complete difference in dancing style
sweet moves on here, ive always wanted to go to a bboy matchoff..nice video! s stars :)
both awesome! to me cephalapod was holding it down. just different styles for sure. awesome battle though, respect.
but it is.. or else u will have to name all the styles they use, but when ones says poppin u know what to think of :)
sorry to bust your bubble guys but im pretty sure dementia's chinese ;( and hes one of the sickest poppers out there
Nice. I now understand why they call him "cephalopod".
(Nerd joke. Look up "cephalopod", and look at how he moves.)
Not accurate...the second song is the original from Davy DMX called "One For The Treble" which came out in 1984.
@yayatCHILLZ
Yeah... definitely not created by michael jackson. He didn't really invent to many moves. He just redesigned a lot of the old ones with different styles.
Buenísimo el baile de ambos... Y La canción es temazo
I like greens style its similar to what im training for but reds really good too, id have to agree with the tie
nah, cephalod is better, much more technical with his movements...dementia is wearing a red shirt...enough said.
yooo both these guys got sick skillz and if anyone doubts that post a video response of you doing better.
ceph isn't hitting... he's not popping and he wasn't ticking he was strobing. dementia killed that shit tho
dementia is quite a lot better, hits to the music and great connection to moves. Also much smoother moves.
No. Chris Brown, Omarion, and pretty much every other music video person uses hip hop. And I'm talking about the dance not the culture or bboying.
Dementia wasn't quite on it in this battle. Cephalopod won because he was more creative but from what I've seen of Dementia he could have done better.
@Hiccs18:
THX very VERY MUCH for the Name of the song!!! ^_^
and pinoyjustin:
just search for "art of noice". I´ve the song.
thx a lot
Idk if its just me, but this sounds better with Tech N9ne Bout ta Bubble playing in the background.
Dementia sick with them hand movement and that body work's right on it!!! Straight killed the thang!
oh fuck yah, "BeatBox" by the Art of Noise, awesome popping and waving, old school here, oh hell yah

This video got me into popping and breakdance some 13 years ago
I dunno about the entire thing, but the second song uses the beat from Bout Ta Bubble by Tech N9ne
cephalopod..sick. dementia, mad tutting. toss up for the battle but if i had to choose..c dawg--
@deejaypham I call troll. Anyone who says poplocking is either ignorant or a troll. I'm leaning towards troll since it's all caps.
Beat Box came out in 1983 by Art of Noise and was one of their singles. So, kudos to Midtownhog
where are the vids I would love to see them, he`s not bad at all. Killed ticking and animation
i think the music is some kind of mix. i know Bout da Bubble by TechN9ne is in there somewhere
im ksorry man but the guy in the red had some madd tutting skills man. wish i was that good.
gageparker its popping and locking and youre right but for popping and lockin it was amazing
that shit wasnt even on beat
strobes are cool, but dementia's tuts are so nasty it hurts
and pleas stop calling it pop locking. i hate that term!
its either popping OR locking
Both amazing
