I bought a certified pre-owned 2012 Mini Cooper S last month, basically the same R56 2nd generation Mini Cooper S as the one reviewed here, and I must say, this review is still bang-on accurate. Mine has newer audio and climate control switches, and a six speed auto with paddle shifters, but otherwise practically the same car. I love the change in exhaust note once you put the car on sport mode....you get a rather enjoyable thump thump thump from the tail pipe once in a while....puts a smile on my face, but then again, I'm usually already smiling from the acceleration, flat cornering, and direct responsive steering.
I bought a 2010 mini cooper s r56 as my first car 5 months ago... One of my best decisions of my life.
hello man ! have you had any issues with the car ?
@mehdijbl The truth is that yes, I have had some problems but I knew I would have them when I bought it, I have done:
- Change the timing chain plus water pump.
- Change of rocker cover (the pcv valve was broken when I bought it).
- Cleaning of the intake valves with nutshell (this was more for maintenance due to carbon buildup, bad of these engines with direct injection).
- Complete overhaul of the cooling system: Change of thermostat, water pump pipe to thermostat and expansion vessel (actually only the thermostat was leaking but I changed everything as a precaution to have it already disassembled).
- Change in the oil cooler gasket because it was leaking oil.
And I think that's it, I know it's quite a lot of problems but if I'm honest it wasn't so much money because everything except the distribution I have done it myself. Now the car goes even better than when I bought it, especially on the issue of cleaning the intake valves, they accumulate a lot of carbon.
With this car you have two options, become a mechanic or have a lot of money for the mechanic.
I forgot it, I changed the vacuum pump too, was leaking oil
"It doesnt move around you, it moves with you" That pretty much sums up the Mini driving experience. Its perfect
Should really put the Year of the car being reviewed as it's likely to confuse people. Review is 07-11.
Bless you!
Does 07-11 mean July of 2011 or November of 2007? Serious question. Thank you.
@@hyperlicht 2007 - 2011
@@hyperlicht you American?
@@jonesjones4036 Yes.
Because an S wouldn't be an S without the 'go-faster' hole.
Tom Ford is such a brilliant narrator!
I had a Brand new 2005. I don't speed, but in my mini I was speeding and zig zagging lane changing all over the place. It was extremely fun to drive.
I had one in London for 2 years and it was fantastic.
I LOVE my R56 Cooper S. I dont want a newer Mini.
honestly i think the f56 is the sweet spot. love mine
@@cchewwitup this is a Macro not a Mini
Sorry. BMW ruined this car just like it did every other car in its lineup besides the true Ms
@@cchewwitupf56 bad
I had 2 of these Mini Cooper S’s in 08 and 10. Great cars and the last manuals I bought, been auto ever since, my word it was fun the stir those gears around.
First time ive owned this mini (mine is 2009 cooper s) and I have fallen in love! Wish I had bought one ages ago, but I really didn't have a problem with my 2017 clio rs 220, it was just costing too much.. lol
I drive a 2009 mini Cooper with a sunroof it’s mellow yellow black interior it’s the S model I love it don’t wanna ever get rid of it
I have a 03 cooper s and I love it. Part of me wants to upgrade just so I get a nice turbo noise instead of a screaming supercharger.
Love that sweet whistle.
I drove a 2013 Cooper s at Carmax yestarday and it was an amazing fun little thing. It felt fan at any speed unlike my 2011 GT which will put me in jail before I have any fun with it. I am keeping the Mustang but I will also be buying a 2007 Turbo Cooper s for everyday driving. Now the issues with German cars, specially the mini is what scares me a little bit. However I live in Fresno Ca, a city with more mechanics than people so I don't think that's going to be a problem. I myself might be working on the mini all on my own. After all I was able to put my motorcycle back together all on my own.
You'd it go?
I bet u found out most mechanics don’t want to work on them
I had a PT Cruiser 2.4L with a turbo. My R53 with the Eaton Supercharger is fantastic. No more turbos for me.
I know I’m really late to comment but 07 is the absolute worst year for minis💀
Why I love the R56. 1. pop 2. pop 3.bang. 4. pop pop. Yeah you don't get a supercharge wine but u get explosions from the exhaust so i'll take the compromise !
This was 2007! I got the same one.
Same here. Loving it. Motoring is my newest hobby. 🏁🏁
Bought an R56 Cooper S for the wife last year. God it's fun!! And feels really quick too. Not sure if it's been chipped or something.
If it’s chipped you can see the primer under the paint. You can get chips painted.
@@Montoya2005 He's not talking about the paintwork haha, he's on about an ECU chip / tune. Pretty common on these cars.
Good job on getting your wife a car.
Bought the clubman s. Couldnt be happier
Thanks for the lively review. Is this the 2007 R56?
Love mine too. Makes me smile.
I think i fell in love!
Thats some bus! Auto too! Nice :-) Enjoy it! Really looks like it would be so comfy on the road....more long road trips now?? :-)
I own a 2007 Cooper S with the jcw tuning pack, love driving it, makes me look forward to driving to work because it's my daily, but damn is it unreliable, bought it at 53,000 miles and had to replace the HPFP, timing chain, oil pressure sensor, front coil springs, and now I need to replace the water pump. That's not including all the regular maintenance. So if you're buying used, I'd recommend having atleast £1k spare for any repairs.
Christopher Reynolds thinking of getting it reliable has it been since the repairs you mentioned
I think you had bad luck.. they are incredibly reliable
MINI Coupé Works review would be nice!
Can u plz tell wah mode is this
I just bought a sport diesel cooper four door,,it's amazing
Just bought a 2011 r56 Cooper S with a manual gearbox, can't wait for it to arrive.
Diego Troco how is the car?
It has been quite reliable so far, I bought a 28.000 km car so I was expecting something in good shape, but being a second hand car meant I had to spend quite a bit on brake pads, brake fluid and other general maintenance expenses, but other than that the car has no issues at all. It's a fun little car to use on city streets but can handle motorways with no problem at all. Its suspension is really on the hard side so potholes are the only problem to deal with, at least in my city where roads are garbage. I am really impressed by its performance, you can hit 200 km/h effortlessly and still it does not empty your tank that quickly. I live in Uruguay so for that kind of money there is no brand new car that could possibly handle as well as the Cooper S can (brand new they where like 55-60k dollars, now with depreciation they are around 30-35 k for a really good one, for that kind of money you could buy a 1.2 turbo Peugeot 308, cars of that class).
Diego Troco thank you so much for that, I am from England and I wanted to buy this car as my second car, I'm age 20, a student looking for something that is quick and doesn't drink too much
You're welcome, Im 18 , the Cooper S really suits people our age, I hope you can find a really nice one. I would recomend the 2011 onwards, the LCI model, it just looks so much better and I've been told they should be more reliable than an earlier R56
Hi, for someone who has this car in either the US or in Canada. Do you put premium gas in the mini cooper s ?
Premium is recommended for both the standard cooper and the S. You can use mid grade in a pinch, 91 octane is optimal tho.
Yes it's brilliant, but I adore my R50. I'm partial to the go kart 1st gen.👌🏻
Nice car I have the same model.
Ditch the run flats like I did and the car is as it should be excellent.
HI
i am a mini specialist and wanted to if i could use this video on my website and i will link back to you so you can get more reviews.
Thanks
Ive been thinking of getting a jcw but am torn between the jcw and a sirocco 2.0tsi its for me and the girlfriend and she doesn't drive fast so looking for something fun but eco and easy to park for about £10,000 any suggestions?
Have a look at Audis too, A1,A3
Fiesta st around 12 grand is supposed to be the best small car you can buy, suzuki swift sport around 9 grand, fun to drive but not as fast as the fiesta, Peugeot 208 gti, vw polo gti and clio rs are all really good aswell. Depends what you want really, but I'd definitely recommend looking at those if you haven't already, they may be a little bit over 10,000 but you should get them all for no more than 12,000, if you want something a bit cheaper then there's obviously models which are 'less sporty' but I've spent hours looking at all them, it's a bit sad but I'm looking for a similar thing to you haha, but if you wanted a small car that's fun and fairly decent on fuel then those are definitely the best cars for around ten thousand, they all look good too! Hope this helps haha
What did u end up getting and are u happy
Calling from July 2015 - the Mini is a 2 liter, twin turbo animal. This is NOT a 2015 model being reviewed here, even though this video was published in April 2015.
+Pfffffft 3rd gen Mini with it's 2 liter twin turbo is pure JUNK! Too big, suspension too soft like asian cars and NO MORE go kart feel. The 2nd gen LCI mini (R56s, R57s, etc.) was and is still the best mini to get.
My dad likes the mini. Hope he buys it and I get to drive 😅
I prefer the R53.
100%
This guy came into my work the other day driving the new q8, weird
high pressure fuel pump... check it out
2007
Cooper S is just not a Cooper S without Supercharger. Oldschool professionals know what I mean. :)
Heck ya, I just bought a 2002 Mini S
I have a 2002 Cooper s. Love the whine of the supercharger.
can someone can tell me how much gas consume?
oloblivion1 approx 36mpg uk
mine makes 8.6 L/100KM
Thanasis Zeniou that’s too much dou
I've just had the latest mini cooper s and it drinks fuel so I would say also drinks fuel
I’m getting 29mpg regardless what kind of gas and or octane boost I use. I drive about 75% highways. I’m fine with that. Love to see 30mpg.
And this is why top gear are so much better at Reviewing cars
.... So if the next mini dose 145 mph wot you going to say, lol
Plan on used Mini repairs to cost more than house maintenance or health care.
I'm confused! Which year is this?
I think this is the previous mini . The new ones have the speedo and tach all Infront of the driver unlike this or the other traditional minis where the speedo was in the center. Now there's a sat nav screen and ambient lighting in the center.
***** 2007
***** Arman Talwar Stephen Farkle Thanks.
+a a its the first year of the r56, previous was a r53
I have driven the 2010 r56 for almost a year now and its great fun even especially in traffic. Zippy fast and handles incredibly.
+A Dub 👍
Here's a classic mini with a supercharger that I fitted : ruclips.net/video/FUCpQ_J60yY/видео.html
o duman nedir bro araba yanıyor sandım .....
And why would you only want to do 140 miles an hour in a mini
R53 Cooper S or bust.
Mini a German ca r with a British flag on top
When you order James may from wish
always broken
I prefer vicky
The R56 MINI is the best MINI, but only if you buy later than 2011. R53 is a close second. I prefer turbos. The new F56 is ugly and large, even if it is faster.
Im not an expert but I believe it has to do with engine reliability issues in early r56 years.
what is difference between normal one without turbo ? and turbo one ?? and the r56 ??
Eh r56 had the worst of the reliability issues including engine breaking itself. R53 supercharger at least had a cool sound and wasn't just another turbo car.
N18 Engine upgrade
MINICOOPERSGTR
Wtf is the filter
mini will get my money if it is with no engine but only battery and little i8 bmw style motors and same value for money .wicky butler in the boot would be priceless too
bring back the r53 a proper mini ..
7.1? I thought it was 6.2?
VicDion Wright Depends on altitude. The air is thinner North of perfect sea level conditions.
That's the jcw
This is NOT the new mini, even his hair cut seems a decade old.
That means BMW is British or German??
BMW is German. They bought mini, which was originally a British car.
Clio 182
They are the most fun on the road why buy a boring toyota or mazda go on be a devil buy a mini an make sure its a manual an if the missus winges trade her in
I ran a 97 Maxima into the ground. Took care of it really but it died right at 290k. I got an 07 Mini Cooper S last December and driving is really fun as f*ck now!!!
Fucking pedestrian safety bullshit has destroyed modern car styling.
The same continent that came up with those regs is now legislating the petrol car out of existence.
I respectfully decline .R53 is where it’s at, all day any. 56 is a girls car
You`d be changing your mind now ,,, - Worst Built Car of the 20th century !
Wrong. Anything pre N18 engine is a pile of turn. Anything after that much of the problems are solved.
@@Montoya2005 Not all. 2013 MCS here, bought new, always garaged, always in sport mode, driven hard after foreplay and very well cared for. 125,000 miles rear wiper motor, 110,000 downstream O2 sensor, 100,000 valve guide seals, 90,000 left fuel sender, 30,000 VANOS solenoid, 25,000 upstream O2 sensor. And other minor stuff like the intake boot cracked at the turbo end. I love her, but she's hard to love. Like any English sports car, when she's fully sorted out, it makes me do the stupidest grins and giggles.. she's a baaad girl... but she breaks a lot. And is very pricey to fix. I'm glad I have had two extended warranties, and next year look to extend again. She needs to give me at least 5 more years. And who knows, I may keep her after getting something else.
@@wakkowarner4288 not all but they have common faults. Mine had the faulty ashtray issue and while driving it would pop open and throw fag ash in my eyes. Almost crashed once and my eyes were raw and sore.
Irritating reviewer.
Never, EVER get one of these. Financial ruin.
Review is a little dated and should be replaced with the more modern 3rd generation mini. “As for R53 v R56 argument” - move with the times people, the same argument exists with VW and the golf. If we listened to purists there would be no ABS, electric windows etc. The guy doing the review is a bit of a nob also
You sound like a bit of a nob yourself
So it’s ugly and slow? No surprise there then
