    Here's some more ideas:
    1. Give each vehicle at "call sign". Make it simple like driver's first name and number, like "John 4" (driver's name is John and he's the fourth vehicle in the convoy).
    2. Make a list of vehicles and people in convoy. Give copy to every vehicle.
    3. Each vehicle is responsible for the vehicle behind it. Keep it visible in rear view mirrors, and if you lose sight slow down or stop and alert lead.
    4. If you're traveling a mapped route, mark phases/goal posts/milestones on map. Give goal posts easily identifiable names. Give every vehicle a map with marked goal posts. That way convoy members can keep track of progress and vehicle locations. (ex.: "This is Tail End Charlie. I've cleared Rook Bridge. Out.", or "This is Lead. Arrival at Well 6, Well 6")

    Good Video! I've been to Iraq 3 times and been on hundreds maybe a thousand plus convoys from going though towns, highways, and literally in the middle of the desert and this is one of the best videos/classes on off-road/tactical convoying that I've seen. Thanks!

    Hey Ronnie, "Tail End Charlie" is a aircraft term for the tail gunner of the last plane in formation, his job was one of the most important as he was the first to spot aircraft attacking from behind... and also the most likely to die

    Excellent advice, Ronny. You just touched on having someone in the middle of the convoy. I always define a "Piggy in the Middle" vehicle. Their job is to make sure the Tail End Charlie acknowledges the Leader's messages, and, if they don't, to repeat it so they can hear it. Some of my convoys have been 10 km long because of dust and the Tail End Charlie often can't hear messages.

  • @4xFarAdventures

    On a hill ascent, only one vehicle should make the climb at a time. The others need to wait until it's clear. The Trail Leader should stop far enough away so all members of the convoy can stop after the hill climb. People traveling uphill usually have the right of way. They may not have the traction or power to start from a stop and continue up.
    You are responsible for the person behind you. When making a turn, wait to see them, then proceed through the turn. If everyone does this the convoy won't split into multiple groups. Had this happen in Death Valley once, and a few people went missing for about an hour just as it was getting dark.
    Tail Gunner or Tail End Charlie calls out when they've made a turn so the Trail Leader everyone is through. On the highway it's good to have the Tail Gunner make a lane change before the group does. That will let the convoy make the lane change without getting someone else (not part of the group) stuck in the middle.
    Great list Ronny!

    One thing you forgot, if you have to make a long set of comment, say 'break' and give a breather every 30 sec. to a minute to let other traffic have a chance. Then recommence.

    I have gone on a bunch of runs. Like your videos so figured I would watch. I didn't expect to learn anything but the daylight light idea is great! The runs here in Arizona can be rather dusty. Ronnie doesn't mention it specifically but at the end of the video he talked about relaying info and used example names. Always know the name/nickname of the radio operator in the rig in front of you and behind you.

    As you mentioned Ronny, when driving in a convoy all vehicles should have their headlights on at all times. An extra tip for that, if any vehicle in the convoy has a problem they should turn their lights off before they pull over, that gives a visual cue to the other drivers that something is up and the convoy needs to stop. It's especially important if the vehicle is having electrical or comms problems.
    One the subject of radio checks, have your convoy radio check in order from front to back, and make sure they wait for the vehicle in front of them to finish their check before they jump on. When doing your radio check both parties doing the radio check need to reply with how they are receiving the signal regarding volume and clarity - i.e. is the volume soft or loud? is the signal broken and unreadable or is it clear?

    Great Vid Ronny. Haha wish I'd seen it before our weekend 'tag-along' as I wouldn't have tied up the channel giving the history of "Ninghan". In hindsight I should have said if anyone wanted to hear an explanation about the station's history that we duck to a different channel and keep the convoy channel free. I had two radios so one could have been kept on the main channel and I could have announced to my audience if you were messaging. Very cool tips. I do like Perth Enduro's comments below. The numbering idea seems like a good idea. Great stuff Ronny 😎

    If you're having issues with your car or you just need the convoy to pull over. Turn your lights off ( day driving) then when the vehicle in front you notices, they will also turn theirs off untill it's passed down to lead vehicle and then he'll pull over. This of course if you are having comms issues or don't have one for what ever reason. Handy little way to get a convoy to stop

    Great vid mate. Before departing everyday do you have a small "orders" talk. E.g get a map out and tell the convoy where they are travelling, actions on, your expectations, what to expect along the route and other useful info?

    Recently went on my first group/convoy ride offroading.
    The first half, the driver in front of me kept me in sight. Even so, the terrain had him 'disappear' occasionally and I didn't know which direction the trail went or which lone to take.
    The second half, people shuffled the order and the driver in front left me behind. That is when I got stuck (my inexperience). Person behind spotted me and I continued without a recovery. (steep uphill double switchbacks on basketball sized rocks).

    The Delorme GPS's allow you to send messages to each other, probably not a bad idea for Arse End Arnold and Head End Harry to each have one in case they get separated. Plus if you need immediate assistance from a medivac or something you can call for help.

    Ronny, awesome videos. I've got a question unrelated to this video: do the turbo v8's in the landcruiser have EGR? If so is it reliable?

    • @Ronny_Dahl
      @Ronny_Dahl  7 лет назад

      +Kevin P yes they do and it clogs up the engine. Can you remove it? NO not by law, big fines if caught. Intake cleaning at 100k service would be a good idea

    • @kevinp5325
      @kevinp5325 7 лет назад

      Good to know. Here in North America, our diesel trucks have not only EGR, but also DPF (particulate filters) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) which uses urea. All 3 components have the potential for problems in the long run, which has made diesel ownership somewhat costly and challenging (like Australia, it's against the law to remove or modify these components). The companies here have made progress in fine-tuning these systems since they first came out, but they still add complexity and cost to otherwise reliable diesel engines.
      I just wanted to know if any of this stuff was making its way into Toyota's global vehicles, which are generally known for being very reliable. Thanks for the insight! Also, if you ever make your way to North America, I hope you get a chance to explore and make some videos; there some scenic and remote areas in the western US and northern parts of Canada.

      You can do that now with modern radios.
      Also, you can achieve the same thing simply by having more power (if using FM) than the other people's radios, eg 100w instead of 5 watts.

    • @firetofork
      @firetofork 7 лет назад +1

      Just get someone to program your radio up to 25w. Totally illegal but very effective

    • @adelarsen9776
      @adelarsen9776 7 лет назад +2

      Most UHF CB's unfortunately cannot be altered to produce more than the 5 watts allowed. You can however obtain a commercial radio and put it on high power. The trouble you then have is that transmitting more power does not make your radio receive better so people far away can hear you however you can't hear them.

    Majority rules? Get stuffed. How about limiting the numbers in your group or splitting the group up while traveling? I have no obligation to put up with disruption to my travel because you decide you have right of way.
    In National Parks more than 5 vehicles is not reasonable. They take up too many resources (including often scarce camp spaces) and make too much noise. Majority rules? How about responsibility and reasonableness rules?!
