  • In this video I tear down the 4.2L Holden engine.
It ran fine when it started for the 1st time in 25 years, But pulling it apart showed that it was full of old oil like tar and rusted out welch (freeze) plugs.
Sorry about the sound quality, you may have to turn up the volume a bit as I forgot about using a microphone. Dumb ass, I know.
    Enjoy it anyway.

I agree, they're pretty easy to work on. Ive never had a V8, but I recoed my 202 years ago. Everything from the head gasket down was all redone. Hallidays in Lismore did it all.

GMH painted these engines as a long motor with the intake and timing cover attached. That is why a little over spay is on them sometimes. I always use a socket and extension to knock the core plugs in and pull them out with multigrips. Much mor control on removal than them flying across the workshop floor. 🤣Also yes the 2 rear plugs are harder to remove as they are close to the rear cylinders. They fitted steel plugs from factory as they were cheaper than brass plugs. motor looks like a good candidate for a freshen-up. cheers Stew.

Besides the over spray the double row timing chain wasn't factory! So someone has had a play in the past.

Best way to get stuck lifters out is remove the camshaft and push the lifters towards the sump.

@@bigal878 that's good advice. I take it you roll the engine upside down. Rotate the cam so the lifters stay up. Remove the cam. Rotate the engine right way up and knock the lifters down?

sounds good to me ...jus' sayin'. I was told as a yougin' keep 'em tuned and a good littl' V8. apparently the experts luv the 308 but I would have the chev 307/327 or 3fitty anyday. nearly bought a 253 EI bommerdore wagon in last couple of years.

I've has them all. When i was 21 (many moons ago) I had a 350 monaro, was awesome, but I had a 308 in my slr5000 which would have gave it a good run.
Had a 253 in an old hq premier that used to rev its tits off, felt great to drive.
This 253 for the gts coupe will be a cruiser built back to factory spec as its a matching numbers coupe.
      Thanks for watching.
