DIY XL Plasma cutter build Part 4 first cut
Finally I got my ass into gear and put together the video of the plasma cutters first cuts.
What will you see in todays Video?
I show the custom water pan. Before you ask it cost $320.
I install the toothed slats. Not overly happy with the support angles as I made them with 4mm slots, but the slats are 3mm. SO they move around a lot. Its something I will fix up in the near future.
I fill the pan, approx 50L of water and I use 2L of Nulon engine coolant to stop the rust.
I do a demo cut with no plasma turned on.
I find I have some issues wit the probing which turned out to the the adjuster bolts on the Z axis. Fixed that up. Probing worked OK.
Attempted a trial cut, but found out that my small p...

Very cool, great to see the CNC Plasma table finished and working with the first cuts. Very cool. Can you pm me the final build cost in $AUD
Are you the darren turner with the silver comaro?
@ Yes bud 👊😎
@ Hey Kevin, yes. Been a while. HQ Coupe looking good.
@darrenturner6090 ok ill get you some details later
@darrenturner6090 Here's the run down on the costs. For anything through Amazon Australia, x 1.5 the price JD suggests. Steel cost for me was outrageous, but I was lazy, I bought duragal tube from bunnings in short lengths, 1.5m lengths. Which is why I made it 1.5m x 1.5m. If I was you, I would get long lengths if you can pick them up, way cheaper, you will save about $200. I used duragal so I didn't have to paint the x and y axis tubes as others have issues with the steel rusting. I think all up I'm into it about $1600 -$1700 not including my plasma cutter, which I already had. If you don't have a plasma cutter, just look into a cheaper brand that meets the requirements of JDs suggestion. Lots of people have had success with the cheaper plasma cutters. Mine is a cigweld easycut35. It's too small, get a 45amp pilot arc plasma cutter. When you buy the plans, buy the XL plans from JD. It has a calculator for whatever size table you decide to make. He developed this option after I supersized mine. There was no option for a larger table when I had to work it all out on my own. My thought is make it as large as you can with the space you have.
Hey bud, interested is actual build cost in Aussie $$, if you can pm me or include in Pt.3
Great video, I’m thinking of building one also. How do you find the 3D printed bearing retainers for longevity? Cheers. Darren (Blue Mountains NSW)
Great video, I’m thinking of building one also. How do you find the 3D printed bearing retainers for longevity? Cheers. Darren (Blue Mountains)
@@darrenturner6090 hey Darren, I've only cut about 6 items to date. But most people don't have too many issues. I think I'd they do, they just reprint what they need. I used ASA filament for the printed parts. A bit tougher than what JDs garage suggests.
I would always, always, have an oil pressure gauge hooked up for first starts on these engines. Not worth the risk!
Hey Paul, I had already primed the engine with oil. I should do a video of my engine oil priming pump. Pretty simple really, just a 6cyl red motor pump bolted to a bucket with a feed and supply hose fitting threaded onto the pump. I run it off my drill. Connect it to the oil pressure sender port on the engine oil pump. Works a treat. I prime till I see oil flowing from all of the rockers. I'll definitely look into a video in the near future showing what it is and how to make it. Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoy the videos.
I recently bought the XL table plans, metric version. Just wondering how much 3d print filament was used as I'm about to buy some rolls
@@marty3469 two rolls for what I built Marty. But I built mine before they had had an XL version. The Z axis is different on their XL version but two rolls should still work for you.

Where to buy them?
@@Tyler-np9ud Thete are many places that sell them like speedway motors etc. I purchased mine through ebay I think the seller was speedworx. Make sure you get a set with the relocation blocks with bolts and extension harnesses.
I put a statesman aircon into a HZ 253 wagon back about 1995. It was a bugger of a job, In had to enlarge a space in the firewall and change the cable control system to vacuum. The worst part was removing and replacing the dash. It worked really well for years, and then I took the car off the road. I still have it, and having retired I have started to restore it. Have just finished replacing all the brake stuff and am working on the fuel system now. The aircon had the old gas in it, so that will have to be upgraded too. Lots of fun though. Keeps me from getting bored.

How long across do you think I can go using that belt?
@@cutweldngrind well my table is 1400mm wide x 1500mm long. Minimal flex in the belt. There are wider gear drives and wider belts on the market. If tou go wider you will have to add an extra bearing or two to each guide roller assembly, depending on width. It's a cheap option using the belts, a ball screw would be optimum I would think, but adds alot to the cost.
@@SullysRodskustoms. Thanks, 1500mm is a good size for sure. I don't have a 3d printer so I either have to buy one of buy the printed kit. Thanks again.
@cutweldngrind my cut with doesn't take a standard metric width sheet of steel. From memory my sheet size can only be 1130mm wide x 1000mm long. So make yours 1500 mm wide outside the y axis tubes. Then a full width sheet can fit.
I have a crossfire with XL kit and thinking on building the JD XL table now. Cool video.
@@cutweldngrind thanks, just ask if you need more info.
Awesome build mate, I'm planning on getting their xl plans when the metric is ready, with the tensioner could you not just trim down the part you slide where the slotted holes are to give you another few mil?
oh and thought about grommet to plug the hole in the x axis tube/
@@2874mattm I thought about a grommet but the x axis is a really close fit and will contact it.
@@2874mattm not sure I understand what you mean.
@SullysRodskustoms. I cant share a photo, but I meant the tensioner part that slides with the long slots. trim the right end (behind the m8 jam nut) a bit to allow the tensioner to loosen more so you'll have more travel to take up slack. On second look it look like the slots are bottomed out on the bolts.
@@2874mattm ok. I get what you mean now, there really isn't much adjustment with the design. So what I did was back off the belt reasoner, pull the belt tight. Then slip the little belt clamp in place, then add some tension. Seems to work ok.

@@burgingarage Thanks, it took some working out, how to take the JDs garage plans and supersize them. After I finished they brought out a larger model. Lol. Just my luck.
I found the Jds garage XL the other day super impressed and as soon as they have metric plans I'll order it. The cheap Michigan 40 amp from total tools I've been using does a good job up to 5mm plate.
@@vrrealimmersions8833 yeh I know right. It took me a month to build because I had to work it all out myself. Plus his amazon links are to amazon US which doesnt ship much to Australia. I had to copy the descriptions from his BOM and paste them in Amazon Australia to find stuff. Not everything was the same and took some research. Some things I bought through Amaxon Australia, ebay, some through jaycar. Be careful with lead times, especially for the shielded cable. It took weeks to arrive as did the z axis drive. I asked JDs garage if they would upgrade my plans to the XL as I had only just bought their small version weeks before the announcement of the XL version as I wanted the limit switch info. @@alexrenault3620 Hey Alex, sorry for the delay in replying. Family stuff comes first. The engine is a stock 5.7L engine I pulled from a wreck I purchased. Glad to see tge younger generation enjoying these old beasts. You can really keep your costs under control by rebuilding/repairing components yourself. Keep up the motivation levels lads.
Is it streetable?
@@randallmason9687 it starts smooth, idles smooth, revs well. Some times It has a splutter in one or two of the tb's. I thinknif I play around with the tune more it would definitely be street able. It needs to go in a car and a few under load runs logged, so I can check out its fuel map. If I had to do it again I wouldn't buy speed master, it required too many mods to fit it. It's definitely cheap and nasty.
This is the look do you think a lexon shroud could work to be able to add boost? There's nothing that looks classic like this for boosted applications. It looks modern SB4, Drag Race Holly high ram or Ferrari Eddie Brock cross ram.
@@randallmason9687 I've only has it running on my engine run stand. I think with a proper tune it will work great. It was alot of work to get it just to run. The speedmaster stuff is really poor on instructions and build quality.
Great video thanks mate. Loving these videos helping me prepare for work on my hj tonner. The workshop manuals are good but actually seeing it done helps so much more
@@troydowning2608 your welcome. The manuals are great. But there is alot missing from them. But a really good guide though. I've got the holden service manuals for a hq best investment ever if your building a hq/j/x/z. Thanks for watching.
Perfect mate - mine is leaky a bit so I've been thinking of tackling this. This will help heaps, love all your videos.
@@AaronHooper-tb3ir thanks mate. I'm no proffesional photographer and my sound is sometimes up the shit, but I do what I can to show everything. Even the stuff ups. Glad you like them. I have a few more coming out this week. Brake proportioning valve abd brake bias valve rebuild. And some new merchandise out too.
Are you going to the all holden day nsw next week
Good job brother
@@darrenkingston9912 thanks for watching. I know my videos are a bit clunky. I'm no expert at filming. But I hope the content is good.

@@drifterdrifter9558 yeh mate sorry. I have a video coming out in the next day or so where I purchased a new lapel mic. The sound is better on that one I think.

@@ZITAS-SON I purchased the bolt sets off ebay. Rare spares and kingswood country.
@@ZITAS-SON glad you enjoyed it.
Good video, but brother you need to get yourself a cheap lavalier microphone. Volume is very low.
