I just looked up that competition and saw a winning male team on there. It looks a lot like a warrior's dance, though what I like about Hula, is the fluent and elegant movement that women dance in it. I might look up a bit more (:
There are two main styles: kahiko (ancient) and auana (modern). The ancient ones look more solemn and warrior like. Hula was originally training for men to become warriors. Now is mostly portrayed as graceful & elegant performed by women.

I started dancing Hula at 10 years old, started teaching in 2004. I did go to Oahu for about 6 years of intensives. I have been to Hawaii (Big Island), Oahu, Maui, and would love to go to Kauai before I die. Thank you 💙🌻
