  • In today's video I poke through various sample components we tested during the Wyrmspan design, development, and production process, sharing stories about what worked and what didn't work. Wyrmspan is designed by Connie Vogelmann, illustrated by Clementine Campardou, and published by Stonemaier Games.

    I really love the gold charity eggs for Wingspan, my hope is that we'll get a similar thing for Wyrmspan later but metallic SILVER eggs. Also, really happy to see there will be a dragon fact book. The tidbits of info on the Wingspan cards was my favorite part of the experience. Appreciate seeing some the design choices talked about in this video. Sad the playmat won't be stitched (although expected that since Wingspan's wasn't) and I do like the original metal coin design better, although I do like most of the other design choices. The only aesthetic I noticed while holding up cards. Something that was probably discussed in production. The dragon cards all have a "path" black jagged line that lines up with the board below. This line could have been the track color marker - having the red, gold, and purple path track run through the card would have removed the need for the color slot icons without really impacting the look of cards. The dragons would then appear to be visually in the world.
    I do like how they are so clean and tidy though, card clutter is always a pet hate (for me).

    I appreciate having three different boards for modularity when playing on different sized tables. It really triggers me though that they are all different sizes so that there is no "neat" way to display them. To me it will always look messy or cluttered. Maybe in the future you could try designing one big, aesthetically pleasing board then chop it up. That way you can have the best of both worlds, separate boards that could fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  7 месяцев назад

      I'd like to better understand this "trigger." What do the different sizes of the boards (each designed for different purposes) trigger in you? I ask this without judgment.

    • @glendavis4444
      @glendavis4444 7 месяцев назад

      Take a look at Dune Imperium with its two expansions. The Ix and Tleilaxu boards are awkwardly shaped. With just some minor tweaking both boards could have been designed to sit nicely together along the top of the board so that it forms a rectangle when placed next to the main board. As it is, they always look out of place.
      Tidal Blades, Hybris: Disordered Cosmos and Everdell are excellent example of how multiple boards can be designed to fit nicely together on a table.
      Tapestry is another good example of how things can look nice. The three player boards (civ, income and city) all fit perfectly together, if they were all different heights it would look messy.
      Long story short, if you release a playmat with all three boards combined nicely, I'll buy it in a heart beat 😁

    • @kaesar98
      @kaesar98 7 месяцев назад

      I agree, different board sizes detract from the modular "flexibility" and perception of the game's sense of order. When boards vary in size, the available play space for each player around the table is likely different. I want all players to have the same game space to work in, and want the flexibility to locate certain boards near players who may prefer proximity to them (reading small text on round end goals, for example). Lastly, differing board sizes usually makes putting the game back into the box a chore; either some boards are free to rattle around, or uneven stacks of boards inside the box are inevitable.
      All the same, I'm excited to see this game in person and eager for its release!

    In regards to the double stitching for the playmats, I would've thought that it's more appropriate for TCGs? I wouldn't expect that many people would play the same board game as frequently as a TCG player would play their card game. Maybe people just expect the stitching as a mark of quality because of that even though it isn't necessary?

    Hi Jamey. I've seen a few reviews of Wyrmspan and it is getting high praise, which is great however, i get the impression that said reviews point out flaws with Wingspan and therefore praise Wyrmspan for doing things better than Wingspan. I was wondering your thoughts on that. I feel as though they are compared too much when they are in fact, different games and I don't really like the comparisons with Wingspan and saying Wyrmspan is much better.

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  7 месяцев назад

      My hope is that each game will be judged separately for their own merits, but I also think reviewers are trying to serve the questions they anticipate from their audiences, which include the natural comparison between the two games.

    Hi Jamey. I was wondering if the playmats will be folded when inside the box? Im tempted to get them as I love the idea of having an easier time picking up cards but unless they are rolled, I am worried they will form creases by being bent in half for instance and squished with other stuff. Was this tested? Or are the playmats going to be able to be rolled to put in the box?

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  7 месяцев назад

      You can roll or half fold them. There will be some box rise depending on how many you get and how you store them.

    • @rb4551
      @rb4551 7 месяцев назад

      @@jameystegmaier Thanks. Box lift doesnt bother me too too much although I assume if there are expansions, this will add to the lift even more. I mostly am debating the mats vs the potential creases from squishing them in. I typically never consider playmats but if they fit in the box, that is a different deal.
      That said, how often do you find yourself picking up cards from the mats while playing? In wingspan, once a bird was down, it was fairly rare to move or pick it up.

    @StevenStJohn-kj9eb 7 месяцев назад

    Outside/inside: I've noticed that most game boards are printed on the "outside" of a fold, and I thought that was because the area around the fold can get creased over time, much worse on the "inside" than the outside. Indeed, I have one game whose board is on the inside, and it's looking terrible (but perhaps there are other reasons for that, as the production of that game is hit or miss). Are you worried having the player board "inside" will create more wear on the printed side? (To be fair, I've not noticed any issues at all with the Wingspan player boards.)

    • @StevenStJohn-kj9eb
      @StevenStJohn-kj9eb 7 месяцев назад

      Wear & tear art: I can see why you removed that, as if you were constantly getting distracted by it definitely others would as well. But I would think in some circumstances "wear and tear" art is actually a good way to future-proof against being distracted by wear and tear. The more "rustic" art is, the less glaring dings and dents are later. (And for many games with a historic or fantasy theme, a rustic look is consistent.) I think it was Darwin's Journey the other day where I checked a couple of times to make sure I hadn't spilled anything on the rule book, as the rule book pages have art that suggests Darwin was a little sloppy around his diary. ;) I like the look, but I guess I was doing that "double checking" thing you were doing with the cards.
