I'm impressed with the City Rover, get the impression of some big car positives like relatively quiet. 40MPG is not fantastic, but I guess that you may be driving it fairly hard. My 1988 Volvo 340 GLE 1.7 Litre) with over 100,000 miles on the clock, gave over 50 MPG on a long run. Seriously, I thought that the fuel gauge had stuck.
Sheffield, I remember it well, was there around 1970 (studying Electronics at the University). I went up there in My 1961 Mini 850 (basic model), but it was not standard under the bonnet. Fitted a bored out 1098 CC engine with Duplex timing gear, AEA630 cam, 12G295 head, single 1 1/2" SU, 3.44 differential. These mods seemed to give Cooper S performance, but with better fuel economy. Top speed was over 110 MPH, would cruise at 100 MPH if one could stand the noise. When I told a friend of the top speed, he said impossible. He got a demonstration. His comment after "This car sounds like a Spitfire, and I don't mean a Triumph.
The car is still in existence and is still with me.

I have to confess, I was horrified at mid-40's fuel consumption. For a tiddler, I'd hope for way better than that. I'm used to a car that does 62-68mpg, and can still go right across France at the legal limit and more, in comfort. OK, its newer than the CityRover, but still a pretty modest car that is well over 5 years old (Skoda Citigo).

The heated rear window switch actually does have an automatic cut-out after 15 minutes of operation, in case you forget that you'd turned it on.
Here's the convoluted operating instructions from the Tata Indica Owner's Manual:
    Rear windshield demister (unlatched switch)
The switch is pushed and released to switch
'ON' and the knob returns to the normal position. The function indicator lights up in amber indicating that the demister heater is 'ON'.
The function is controlled through a timer and operates for 15 minutes (approximately) and goes 'OFF' automatically at the end of the duration.
The demister heater can be switched 'OFF' anytime by once again pushing and releasing the switch knob.
Note : Switching 'ON' and 'OFF' can be done only with key in 'IGN' position. The demister heater remains 'ON' even after removal of ignition switch key and goes 'OFF' at the end of 15 minutes period.

    • @millomweb

My old Mk3 Cortina had a few, and one of those was with the auto choke, about the only way you could start it on a cold winters morning was by shoving my hair comb down the top of the carb, doing that held the choke plate in just the right place for it to start, worked a treat every time! I cannot think of an appropriate long-distance cruiser, others need to chime in. I'm thinking another Citroën, Mercedes-Benz, Renault or maybe Honda.

I once drove 500 miles to Exeter and back, in a single day, in a 903cc Mk1 Seat Ibiza Special that I'd been given, and I absolutely loved every minute of it. The technique on motorways is to pick a lorry and follow it, and not to bother with lanes 2 or 3.
Speaking of £200 vehicles, my 403,800-mile Peugeot Expert died spectacularly on Tuesday with a presumed cambelt failure about 5 miles outside of Louth on the A157, requiring me to call out a recovery truck. Anyone else might have scrapped it at this point - but instead, I've just spent £500 on a replacement engine and 'box, and have a quote for £400 plus parts to fit it.

I would not like living in a house that is only a few feet from a significant motorway. I suppose the roads were there long before cars and worked fine for foot and horse traffic. Great country. My Dad was in Wales several months before D-day. Said it was a beautiful county and the people were very nice. He told me a story that he was excited that a pub had fresh milk one day.

The city rover was such a missed opportunity, usual bull shit meant a basically good platform was left to fester as a last ditch hope and prayer. Wayyy too much money. It's a basically good car, a couple of interior upgrades and realistic pricing. When the budget offering was maybe a pug 206? (A brilliant budget hatch imo) Air con and a decent spec list would have given it a little while. But an inherently decent motor. Sad...plasters on gun shots at this point :(
